Does anyone else think that the shooting will help sales in the coming weeks? Now the movie is more than a big media event, it's part of a national tragedy, at least in my opinion.
No. Not at all.

I don't think it'll help at all. It's a permanent stain.Does anyone else think that the shooting will help sales in the coming weeks? Now the movie is more than a big media event, it's part of a national tragedy, at least in my opinion.

That's like asking if Natalee Holloway's disappearance would increase tourism in Aruba
Good observation.
I went ahead and saw it Friday afternoon and took my kids with me, but I certainly wasn't in a movie-going mood. I enjoyed the movie, but with all of it hanging in my mind, I don't think I enjoyed it as much as I would have, plus I spent most of the movie trying to keep one eye on the screen and one eye watching the exits and anyone who got up and moved around or walked out during the film.
It definitely detracted from the experience. In my showing, a cop checked the exit before the start of the movie by loudly shaking the exit door, and during the movie an usher checked the exit door three or four times with a flashlight. Each time I was instantly drawn out of the movie.
Not that they shouldn't have done it. It was just surreal.
Fact of the matter is we will never know. But it had a VERY good chance of breaking 200M. WB released their expected numbers and it was 170-180M pre-weekend and studios ALWAYS low ball their expected numbers. For Avengers the same pre-weekend expected numbers were even lower and look at how that turned out .. I always believed that this movie would fall short of the 200M mark but its shame that people are rubbishing away that it never even had a shot. The fact of the matter is, 200 million was never going to happen, even if the shooting never happened. Everyone will play the "what if" card, but the fact of the matter tis, the movie just wasn't as good as the second, and surely wasn't as good as the avengers imo.
I remember reading the BO thread when avengers came out, I think majority of the people said "Just wait for TDKR to release".
Not so sure about that.Does anyone else think that the shooting will help sales in the coming weeks? Now the movie is more than a big media event, it's part of a national tragedy, at least in my opinion.
That sounds fairly ridiculous and distracting, hopefully nothing of that sort happens when I go see the movie. It definitely detracted from the experience. Will not happen. Piracy is a big issue with that.Could this issue cause the studios to rethink the idea of new release movies being released as "On Demand" on satellite & cable on release date?
I was at a Regal cinema, I'm sure they were given guidelines by corporate, so I'd imagine that's being done across the chain.
They usually have one off duty cop on Friday and Saturday night, but I'd never seen one at 11AM until yesterday.

Went to a regal place and nope.
I would word it like that at all. But you have the right idea, just expressed backwards. The shootings had a huge impact on BO sales this weekend. But consumerism is consumerism and isn't going to stop. All those people who didn't go this weekend will eventually still go.
I expect the second and third weekends will be huge.
This is the least fun BO discussion ever.

Well if people have issues with planar and GJB's post then they should have issue with comments like these also;

Agreed.Topping TA was always going to be difficult given the 3D boost. TDKR was the last 2D only film that had a real shot at topping it. I think $190M+ was a real possibility and even if it did not top TA OW gross it would have easily sold more tickets.
I think there is a chance that some families may not return to movies, period.
I have a friend that has a wife and kids (so they rarely go to the movies as it is).
He's pretty turned off by all the events of this past weekend and is considering just waiting for BR for everything now.
No way
How would you even price that lol?
$49.99 like a UFC fight?
At theaters it's individually based ticker price, can't be replicated @ home
Also the cycle of movie release is set in stone
Theater > Blu-Ray/DVD > Stream/VOD > Rentals > Cable (sub based channels ala HBO/Showtime > Basic Cable/Reg TV rights
No way you'll lose one of those
Nope, but I suspect we'll start seeing malls/cineplexes implementing security procedures like airports did post 9/11. Not to the extent of airport security, but even just having metal detectors would go a long way.
The suspect in Aurora came in through the back door.
Metal detectors in the front would be just a visual deterrent.

I don't understand why movie companies haven't gone forward with the movie releases at home like they planned to a few years ago, one view would cost like $50.
The last thing that the Theater industry needs is one more reason for people to stay home and the lines/inconvenience caused by metal detectors would probably be the last straw for quite a few people.

Because a family of 4 going to the theatre spend a lot more than $50. We're talking about a movie that just made $160 million in a single weekend. The formula is not broken. The movie companies and more importantly theatre chains are making money hand over fist.

No one checked the exit door at all? I find that hard to believe. When did you go?

Yesterday.
I've seen the movie three times now.

That money beyond the $50 all goes to the theater. That's why the studios are all for day and date home distribution, and the theaters are fighting it tooth and nail.

What does that mean exactly? Releasing videos of their moving simultaneously with their theater release?
