Aksys Games, a publisher of interactive entertainment software, is proud to announce that the hit Japanese otome game, Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, is coming to the Playstation®Portable in North America! Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom is a visual novel based on the historical Shinsengumi of Japan featuring beautiful art and multiple endings. The Hakuoki series is one of the most popular visual novel franchises in Japan, selling an over 500,000 copies across all platforms and even spawning it’s own animated series!

Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom Story Elements

Japan’s Edo Period was drawing to a close. The shogunate, who’d held power in the country for more than 200 years, found itself challenged by the imperial court, and by several domains who had chaffed under shogunal rule. In this midst of this political unrest, an organization rose to prominence: The Shinsengumi. Originally formed to protect the street of Kyoto from masterless samurai, they came to represent the last, tragic bastion of the honor-bound samurai culture that had defined much of Japan’s history.

In Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, a young woman by the name of Chizuru comes to Kyoto in search of her missing father, and soon encounters danger and the Shinsengumi in quick succession. When it becomes clear the Shinsengumi are also searching for her father, Chizuru is put under their protection. But odd things are afoot in Kyoto—possibly even supernatural happenings. Can Chizuru navigate this maze of mortal danger and political intrigue? Amidst so much mystery and death, can she find romance?

Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom Key Features

- One of North America’s First Otome Games : Experience a historical fantasy adventure while pursuing a relationship with one of several male love interests in a game specifically created for a female audience—one of the first of its kind localized for North America.
- Experience a New Kind of Adventure: Enjoy a visual novel filled with beautiful illustrations and changing character portraits. Examine character biographies, check your story progress, and replay scenes you’ve already watched.
- Chose Your Own Fate with Multiple Endings: The story is told through the eyes of Chizuru Yukimura, but the player will be presented with a number of decisions she must make. The result of these choices will determine Chizuru’s ultimate fate, and the fate of the men of the Shinsengumi.
- Introduction to the Hakuoki Franchise: Hakuoki is a series that enjoys major popularity in Japan among the gaming populace, selling over 500,000 copies across all platforms!

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I have a question, is the target demographics of this game are those who are interested in men? :p

You could say that. It is full of hot men, so if that's your jam you are its target demographic.

What does the limited edition come with? I'm probably going to pick this up for my wife, but I'm curious of the differences between the two. I like the cover for the standard edition better but:

A) Its not for me, so it doesn't matter what I think and

B) That's probably the actual game box cover, which you would still get with the LE anyway.

Thanks!

The LE contents will be revealed in the near future :D

Also, the SE cover will be the cover of the game box that's inside of the LE, so best of both worlds ;D

Why does the cover say "Only on PlayStation"? Isn't this also on 3DS? Or is the Hakuoki releasing in Japan on 3DS in about a month a different game?

It's only on PlayStation since that's currently the only platform it's on in America :)

I like this. This thread is in desperate need of Souji Okita and Hajime Saito, though.

It's also finally available on Amazon.ca for those who want to preorder the game in Canada! :)

Amazon.ca - Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom Limited Edition

Thanks for the links! I went ahead and updated the OP with them :)

But the 3DS title is indeed the same game?

I believe it's the same game for the 3DS version, the 3DS version has a new OP and magical 3D powers supposedly though haha

How did Aksys come to the conclusion that female-targeted visual novels are more likely to succeed in the West? That's not a rhetorical question; I'm actually interested.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I have no interest in the subject matter of the game, but it takes some serious guts to localize something like this to America.... at a time when even surefire games like Xenoblade don't get brought over. Aksys gets the utmost credit for that.

Kinda want, how detail are the "action" scenes?
Nothing that's likely to make you blush (unless you've got some sort of Victorian sensibilities). The M is for blood and language.

We were curious about the otome genre a year or so back and conducted a survey, and then based on those results, decided we'd try to test out the otome market with Hakuoki :)

So hopefully people will enjoy it and be left wanting more :)

I can see this game tricking some 12 year old 'otaku' into buying it. If I was 12, I'd sure have at least checked this game out.
Well, the LE cover art certainly is kinda misleading.

It's certainly an interesting experiment, and I hope you'll succeed. Now localize Senran Kagura to balance it out. ;)

I see what you did there ;D

Though since that is a MAQL title, you might want to ask XSEED on their forums for that :)

Rising Star, actually. Stupid region lock. But anyway, I really hope this works out for you. I take it you don't plan to localize the 3DS version as well? I was always under the impression that Nintendo platforms are generally more widespread amongst females? Seems to be the case in Europe at least...

And think! I'm buying this! I'm a heterosexual male that's going to buy an otome game! That's the power Aksys holds over me.

I hope the experiment succeeds as well... I think it's great that you're all attempting something new.

More otome games in English are always good. For example, my friends have been trying forever to get me to play the Tokimeki Girl's Side games, and more recently, Hoshiiro no Okurimono portable and Shinigami to Shoujo PSP but I don't really have the cash to import everything I have an interest in, heh.

Haha, that's awesome :) We won't lead you astray ;D

And the game can be enjoyed by both males and females alike
regardless of sexual preference
, so I'm glad the themes don't deter you :)

Ah, you're in Europe, that's right hehe.

We have no plans to do the 3DS version currently, but that may or may not change depending on the success of the PSP version of Hakuoki :)
