The BBC suspend Jeremy Clarkson (assaulting producer?) cancel rest of Top Gear Season

All of you talking about Top Gear's popularity have a point, but you need to look up at what the BBC is. It's not a company, it's accountable to the govt, and has had numerous problems the past few years. Whether it comes to it or not is another matter, but the BBC has more to think about than money when deciding how to handle this.

Top Gear only exists in its current form because of Clarkson. If he's gone then the show is finished.

That's what I thought about Johnny Carson. Sure, I'd agree that the Leno years were pretty bad, but the Tonight Show became an institution bigger than any single host. I think Top Gear can survive the loss of one host.

They didn't. There's a section of the right wing media in the UK that want to close the BBC as it's a bit too socialist for their tastes. If anyone on the BBC does anything remotely dodgy, they get jumped on so that these pricks can add them to their "reasons to close the BBC" pile.

Right wing media owned by the Murdoch family who would do pretty much anything to close down the BBC or force it to take advertising as a stepping stone to privatisation so they can buy it and basically turn it into Fox clone using the BBC marque.

What do you mean "a section." The whole of the right wing press and the tory party want to privatise/commercialise the BBC. Murdoch has been openly campaigning for it for ever. It's not hard to find normal right wing people on the street who think that the license fee is some sort of crime against humanity.

People outside the UK can see this suspension of Clarkson as being overly sensitive maybe but the BBC are very sensitive and self sensor a lot because every minor slip up or scandal there is blown out of all proportions by the right wingers. Comedy in particular has been neutered and Top Gear almost seemed like the last place were comedy could get rowdy just because it was so hard line right wing and popular with people who read right wing papers.

I mean I can understand the child molester case, but this? Soon you can't even make satirical jokes on Have I Got News For You without being hounded by right wing nuts.

But not all of them. I can't see how Hammond and May could stick around if they fire Clarkson.

Top Gear US isn't terrible, and they do a lot of the same things that UK edition does, but it's just not interesting enough without the UK presenters. They are that show, and they are the reason it's the most watched show in the world.

The right wing media don't so much go after Top Gear when they get the opportunity like they would any other BBC show considering Clarkson isn't exactly left wing himself. He writes columns for two Murdoch newspapers after all. It's the left wing newspapers like The Guardian and Daily Mirror who hate Clarkson.

Eh, I think you're overestimating the cross section of people who are knowledgeable about cars and have good comedic timing. It's pretty small. Other attempts at emulating Top Gear have crashed and burned.

Chris Harris can't fill Jeremy's spot. Well, nobody can really, but especially not Harris' personality.

No producer is worth 4 episodes of Top Gear

Clarkson sold his Top Gear ownership rights back to the BBC a few years ago. They probably want to fire him, but they know there's a good chance James and Richard would get poached by another network and join Jeremy in forming their own production company for a new car show.

Wouldn't be surprised if there are already offers rolling in.

Please end up on HBO

Jay Leno would probably be a better Top Gear host than he was a Tonight Show host.

Never gonna happen.

Leno is retired and has his own successful YouTube car channel.

Seinfeld makes $400 million a year in syndication.

Jay Leno is never retired.

Clarkson and Wilman still own the international (ie non UK) rights and license it back.

They still have pretty much total control because of that.

All I want to know, and see in video format if possible, is James May and Richard Hammond's immediate reaction to this news.

please

I think this show could easily continue if they keep James and Richard and find a suitable replacement for Clarkson. Someone who's recognizable, someone who loves cars, someone with a history with Top Gear...

Simon Cowell

It might even be better. Think about it.

I always sort of enjoy Top Gear against my better judgement, but man, the stuff Clarkson keeps doing is just childish nonsense. It'll be really interesting to see what the BBC decides to do with this. It's their biggest show, and they haven't really been able to get a show going that's as big as Who or Top Gear going in ages. It'll be easy enough for Clarkson to get a job elsewhere, but clearly he isn't expecting the BBC to follow through with their threats. They haven't so far.

The next few days are going to be interesting.
