I woke up to the biggest valve megaton, but somehow I feel underwhelmed. Maybe because I don't play dota. Can't wait to see new content on this engine though

DOTA itself was a custom game mode. Fuck are you talking about?

Hey, mr Well Mannered, what's so difficult to understand about not wanting to deal with "custom MOBAs"? That's a terrifying perspective, if you consider what a MOBA is and so on...

(Aaand yes, i know how Dota was born, etc, etc...)

Well, it was a pretty low-key delivery.

Nah, they're just doing this so they can slightly improve the hats in Team Fortress 2, keep Dota 2 going, and find more ways to sell unfinished, hardly functioning (nowadays often eternally "early access") indie games to their users for them to make excuses to justify the existence of.

This is cynical as hell but sadly feels more true than hyperbolic.

Terrifying? What is exactly terrifying? I'm pretty sure that a lot of people will enjoy it.

The final part makes no sense. How has Valve encouraged the adoption of Early Access titles when it's continually made an effort to hammer home the fact that they're unfinished and potentially buggy products (developers can no longer write their own Early Access descriptions but instead must fill out a question template)?

i think if you have someone in your house holding a gun to your head and making you play games you don't want to play there are bigger problems in your life than custom dota 2 maps

Releasing a Dota 2 spectator client for tablets/smartphones and (if there's no way of releasing the game without crippling the gameplay and mechanics) consoles would certainly seem like a smart move by Valve.

it'd be hilarious to see the confused salt over not being able to actually play it though

it would be a huge blow-up and I'd kill to see the GAF thread(s)

Why did the Starcraft 2 "custom game" scene never flourish like it did in WC3/BW. Is that type of gaming scene is dead? SC2 Arcade is free too.

I hope DOTA 2 scene will pick up the custom games torch like the late 90s early 2000s...

Because Battle.net as it was launched with Starcraft 2, and the attached red tape that Blizzard put in place was absolute garbage compared to Starcraft 1.

wasn't discoverability really bad, at least at first? i remember people saying it was basically impossible to find anything that wasn't at the top of the most played list

Yup. It's still bad. There's fun games on the arcade but they're so hard to find that nobody plays them. The editor isn't so good either.

I think Valve will pull it off a lot better than Blizz did with SC2.

I have no clue at all what you are talking about, I swear.

This. I don't think Source 2's engine isn't about better graphics - right? It's streamlining content creation.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. The L4D2 port screenshot that leaked earlier in the year by way of a PowerPoint presentation screenshot showed an obvious visual improvement.

Is Dota 2 actually running in Source 2, or is it just the editor that is using the Source 2 binaries?

The version of Dota 2 that is packaged with the toolset can be launched independently from Hammer and is running on Source 2, but Dota 2 proper -- the one that people launch from their Steam game libraries -- is still running on the original Source.

Oh yeah it was horrible. The UI was very confusing and not unified in any way that made sense to the end user, as I recall.

I haven't opened Starcraft 2 in possibly over a year at this point though, so I don't know how it looks right now.

This is how people said it would happen. Half-Life 3 will just be there one day to 0 fanfare.

It's happening.

The internet will collapse.

Well I'm off to preorder Portal 3.

Not jumping any Guns there. Nope, not at all.
Lol. Valve makes people crazy. Their games are incredible and they know it but Steam brings in so much damn money that they're never in a hurry to release anything -- until they're% 100 ready to do so.

Must be nice :)

Any way to tell yet if they have any data streaming tech in the new engine? Dem source loads every 5 minutes man...

As it was prophesized, the coming of 2 will herald the arrival of the 3's.

L4D3, DOTA 3, and Ricochet 3 lol

If it is coming to the Xbox I hope this means Microsoft caved and let Valve bring the workshop madness with them.

Next step: TF2 Remaster.

hot damn! if dota2 comes to the x1 ill have to buy an x1 way too earlier than i thought i would

It would be awful unless they had mouse and keyboard support. I don't know if you've actually played or if you're just getting hyped because its a big game name but multi unit control, targetting, moving your camera to look at another lane, shopping, and well, almost every single aspect would be terrible with a controller, almost downright impossible I would even say.

why? every Valve game eventually comes to the consoles.

MAYBE with the Steam controller.

Maybe.

Even that is questionable for Dota controls. If someone can do it, I'm all for it. But I just have a hard time believing someone would be able to play demonstrably well against a keyboard and mouse.

Dota 2 is about as controller unfriendly as you can get. They would have to change the game so much that it would no longer be "Dota 2." So maybe there will be a "Dota Console Version" but not Dota 2.

Because it would be unplayable. And you can't release a game that REQUIRES a kb/m on a console. Plus MS wouldn't let them away with all the crazy workshop stuff and I believe patching is still a bitch on the consoles due to certification.

It's extremely unlikely we will ever see Dota on a console. It's the same reason they never kept TF2 up to date on Xbox.

It's not going to have cross platform play though is it.

I remember the same being said about Diablo 3 and that worked well on consoles.

Diablo 3 and Dota 2 aren't even in the same league in terms of complexity of controls. Try playing a console game with one foot. That's how Dota 2 would feel on a controller.

Dota 2 would be WAY more difficult with a controller than Diablo 3. There was a way to make Diablo work with a controller but there is NO way to make Dota work with one. Even without cross platform play it just wouldn't be fun. Genuine question but have you played the game?

How would it be difficult? Left analog moves hero, right analog points direction. ABXY has the skills/spells, if its directional just tap, if not hold down for the range. Boom, dota with controller. Actually shoulder/triggers would be better as you could still move and change direction while using skills. Just same with items but have them in buttons or triggers whatever is not used for skils/spells.

Its never going to be as good as mouse + keyboard as the whole game is pretty much desigend around that.
