This is local though when pinned. I mean you have to sync it somehow to your phone either way. This just also happens to store it in the cloud. Plus you have your library available for multiple devices ie laptop/tablet/phone with no fuss.

But I have to worry about it as I go through my library every day, so again is there a pin-all button just to get it over with?

Ya but then you're stuck in the Google Play Music app since it needs to authenticate them. Local mp3s let you use other apps.

Your music gets cached as you listen to it. It seems better to do that, than just pin everything because of reasons.

There isn't a "pin all" button cause it's ridiculous. Unless you have like 8 songs.

So don't pin things? What if I have terrible network connection?

I made a playlist called download and keep it pinned. Just add the songs you want to keep local to it.

If you listened to something before, it's cached, and if you're offline, you can still access that music.

Hmmmm. Maybe I'll try it again. But if anything, this discussion has just reinforced my belief that local is simpler and more convenient....

This is the way to go. Make a playlist, throw in the songs you want (easy as hell on a PC) and pin the playlist. Any time you add or remove a song it syncs with your phone if you're on WiFi, unless you set it to work on data connections too.

You can select music in Play Music and download it directly to your device for exactly that situation.

You can pin playlists, or even specific songs, to you device so they are on internal storage.

I pin the auto-generated "Thumbs Up" playlist and that pretty much covers any songs that I will want to listen to. I also pin my "Good Music" playlist, but all songs in there are probably thumbs up songs as well too so it doesn't really matter.
I gotta look into this then. Thanks for the recommendation guys.

I also used to use the Day One app on iPhone for my diary but it's not on the Play Store. Which is the best diary app for Android?

The Moto line has done a good job matching the appeal of the Nexus devices -- fast updates with a near stock experience. I think I'd rather have Moto's clever features.

Shamu's specs are probably top notch though.

Lets see how long that lasts as a non Google company.

Motorola's new Chicago office is huge and awesome. I have faith Motorola's American influence won't go away!

I was commenting more on its nexus like update speed more than anything else. The hardware designs imagine will keep on trucking.

What is lenovos history of os updates like?

So I'm looking at turning some old phones (Galaxy S3 and a Captivate/GS1) into wall-mounted displays of some sort in my house. Ideally I'd love for them to be able to start up a routine (say read me the weather and some news when I walk into the bathroom in the morning) without me doing anything. So far I have Utter! hooked up which seems to be somewhat useful, but I was wondering if anyone has done anything better or more powerful? Any other apps to use?

Also recommendations on wall-mounted holders would be great (if they exist, if not I'll fashion one myself). Swiveling kind would be preferred due to the way some of my walls/mirrors line up.

Disagree. It's like people who think copying and pasting items into folders is better than syncing. No. You're just used to doing things a certain way.

Probably a really stupid question, but I'm currently rooted on a Verzion GS4 at 4.3... should I just go up to 4.4.2 with the towelroot method to re-root? Is 4.4.2 really worth having? What are the best/biggest changes from 4.3? Sorry, just a bit weird usually when it comes to my phone.

Yes. You're currently on Jelly Bean and the upgrade to Kit Kat is totally worth it.

Anyone notice how slow SwiftKey has become since the recent updates? There's a noticeable delay before the keypad appears on screen. Getting really annoying.

Switching to Minuum for now till they fix this.

Google Keyboard works great.

This has always been an issue for SwiftKey. It starts out great, but then gets slower and slower.

May I suggest Fleksy?

Well besides Google products, most sync software is shit. Nothing beats how straightforward drag-n-drop is. And for repetitive tasks I have scripts in place. I'll take a 2kb script over sync software any day.

If it's pinned or cached it IS local.

I get what you mean, but the verbage being used is wrong.

I meant my entire library being local. No worrying about playlists, pinning, or data usage.
BUT, I will give that synced playlist method a go....

How is it's prediction compared to swiftkey? Pretty much the only reason I'm using it is because... well swiftkey has basically become me.
For me it's been above and beyond anything else I've used. It gets the most fucked up sentences right.
Honestly give it a try. It's very different from many other keyboards, but once you get used to it, it's hard to go back. Especially when you notice how much screen space you save in mini mode.

Yeah, which is why I stopped using it. I'm currently using TouchPal X and I don't have any issues with it's performance (now if I could only get their stupid toolbar above the top row)

Picked up a note 3 today after not having a phone for almost a year after my Galaxy Nexus broke. Really love this phone. I would have maybe waited for the 4 next month, but I paid $90 bucks for it including service so I can live with that.

Edit: also wtf is this sliver clamp, and like little black rods for?

How did you snag that deal? What was the year without a phone like? How interesting.

Got added to a family plan, we just pay the extra 15 the line cost and the note is pretty cheap now since the 4 is coming soon.

As for the year without a phone, it wasn't that bad. I used Google voice a lot, I could make free calls with my computer and text with my Nexus 7. It was just a hassle when I went out if I could not find free Wi-Fi.

clamp is for removing nubs from the pen and the rods are replacement nubs!

On Verizon Wireless, would my brother be able to retain his unlimited data plan, as his wife moves to her first smartphone?

Can she be under her own basic data plan, with her own data/text/voice rules?

She should be able to have a plan that doesn't alter your brother's.
