Velocity 2X |OT| Yippee Kai Yay ************

Can't wait for this to be available. Been waiting a looooong time for this and have a good set of headphones to play this and hotline Miami 2 later this year.

Of course it'll be played on Vita.

Will buy DLC to support devs

Would it be against any self-promo stuff if I link to a video LP of mine when embargo is up + a short text review here?

I don't think so. What u can't do is create a thread specifically about ur video or review. That's considered self promoting.

Of course someone who has been here longer than me might be able to clarify if needed.

Awright looks like the embargo is over, here's my let's play/30 minutes of gameplay footage. I promise I do not suck at the game or use a facecam..

My mini review:

Pros:
  • A proper story. Nothing amazing, but it's got some slick art and some fun dialog.
  • Difficult but forgiving gameplay; earning all golds and perfects is very hard, but just beating the game is very accessible. Dying is an extremely minor setback. No missable content.
  • Time limits for bronze are always 20 minutes or longer. Actual gameplay is generally 2-4 minutes per level though. You will not run out of time, but will get shameful, shameful bronze.
  • Gameplay exposes mechanics one by one with great tutorials (that you can disable after seeing once! Story can be skipped automatically too). You never feel in over your head.
  • Superb difficulty curve going from braindead to very hard with no two levels feeling like an uneven rise in difficulty. Don't judge the game too early as it gets a lot deeper, but never overwhelming. Focus is on mixing different play mechanics more than having a billion unique mechanics.
  • Platforming sections maintain the sense of speed perfectly and have their own fun mechanics like a 360 degree arm cannon you shoot.
  • Control improvements make Long Form Teleport much less painful (1 button return to last telepod)
  • The game warns you when you should deploy a telepod which makes the Long Form Teleport levels work reaction-based just like the rest of the game instead of stopping and looking at a map. LFTs are much less annoying in general.
  • Visuals are fantastic. Art style is great and well realized in gameplay and story sections.
  • Music is also great. You might want to check out the OST
  • Lots of extras to unlock, I still don't have 'em all. Some simple minigames sorta like in the first game.
  • BOSS FIGHTS. Very few, each very different, and very "velocity" in nature. Some are more puzzle than fight.
  • Looks and controls perfectly on PS4 or Vita.
  • Actual variety of levels, visually speaking, a new cosmetic environment every 10 levels-ish.
Cons:
  • There's a couple (literally two) Long Form Teleport maze levels I didn't really like. Neat level design but a bit bigger than I enjoy. I actually skipped them until beating the game; the XP level unlock system from Velocity Ultra is still intact btw.
  • Cross save doesn't automatically upload. Does auto download, and it exists, so it's better than nothing.
  • Remote play doesn't let you touch-teleport like you can on Vita. Game's great without touch teleport, but this would be a nice touch. (Get it.)
  • Throwing telepods in platforming sections is a bit iffy due to analog stick controls--sometimes I waste a second adjusting angle. Nothing big, but oddly imprecise compared to the rest of the game. Rarely an issue though.

Score: Amazing/10 just download it

New PS blog post: 11 reasons why we think you’ll love Velocity 2X, out tomorrow on PS4/PS Vita

Also explains the Day 1 DLC pack:

Oh, and by the way…
Velocity 2X launches with some day-one DLC. I know this divides opinion, but when we finally finished the game and submitted it to Sony, we realised we hadn’t fully explored some of the new features, there are too many!

So, we just kept on working…

The Critical Urgency DLC Pack will be available at launch, and features six obsessively fine-tuned speed-run levels that teach you new tricks and push your teleporting skills beyond the limits of your imagination – into the realm of gaming magic. Master these levels to dazzle your friends and scare your family with freakish talent ;)

FWIW best I can tell they weren't lying--when we got review copies there wasn't a DLC section, that just popped up yesterday.Game feels definitely feels "complete" without the DLC (which I haven't seen outside the trailer) so don't be too off-put by it

My impressions.

It is by no means perfect but it is incredibly fun and addictive. The speed elements of the shmup sections transfer really well to the platforming and make me really want to see a full game like that. The story is actually pretty good and does a decent job of filling out the characters and giving them personality.

There are annoying parts. Throwing telepods is sometimes frustrating and fiddly and I'm not a big fan. Despite that, it still surpassed my expectations and it's my favourite game so far this year.

Telepods and long form teleport levels fill about 95% of my non-nitpicky complaints. Kinda wish there were some form of lock-on for telepods.

Can't wait for this tomorrow. Not sure if I'll play on Vita or PS4 yet.

I hope this game will propel FuturLab into the minds of more gamers, Velocity and Velocity Ultra were amazing games, as were their other titles.

Not only that, the team are fantastic on twitter and blogs and elsewhere at engaging with their fans.

Yup, LFT are fiddly too. The game does a good job of telling you when to drop them but it's still quite easy to lay them too far up and make it impossible to do what you're meant to.

Great reviews! Congratulations, Futurlab!

It's been great seeing this exciting, ambitious and enthousiastic developer grow with each new release and this seems to be their best game yet.

Never really had that problem, if you leave 'em as far to the bottom of the screen as possible it's pretty much always fine, it spawns to a bit before where you dropped the pod.

+Remains a clever twist on the shmup genre.
+Interesting new mechanics added as you progress.
+Sleek presentation.
-Complex gameplay can be draining.

It’d be nice to see an entry with a focus entirely on Sony’s latest console

That's BS frankly. Game feels perfectly at home on PS4. Played it for a week before getting a Vita version, and if you had told me no Vita version was coming I wouldn't be surprised (if not for Ultra being on Vita first...)

Really? I did that a ridiculous amount of times, haha

You really need to keep an eye out for branches; even without the visual/audio cue it's usually painfully obvious where telepods go in the shmup sections, at least if you know it's a long form teleport level. I think you get a couple extra telepods too, so you can be a bit over-eager. My problem with those levels was just the amount of time they take.

I tend to concentrate on the ship and absolutely nothing else, which is kind of stupid but it's just how my brain works. Until i know a level back to front and know where everyhting is, at least.

And yeah i know what you mean. A couple of the levels are reaalllyyyy long.

Seriously, it's games like THIS that make PS+ worth it. I'll gladly pay the $35-$40 per year to get a handful of great indy games that I probably would've bought anyways.

Focusing on the ship gets you killed! It sounds weird, but I keep my focus just a bit off of the ship, habit from bullet hell games. Gotta maintain situational awareness

For someone who has never played Ultra and just downloaded it a minute ago... should I play Ultra first before 2x

Loving the art design in this one.

Transistor sucked me in with its amazing art design too. Can't wait to give this one a go.

Where the heck is Assault Android Cactus? Dunno why I started thinking about that game suddenly.
