#Xboxnoise - Kinectless Xbox Ones may have a problem?

Watched the video. That noise doesn't seem right. Then again, since when did MS care about noise? Relative to a 360 they're probably having a party @ MS over how quiet it is.

This sucks. It has to be a hardware issue because everyone I know owns an X1 pre kinectless(lol) and we are all quiet on the homefront here!

What would have changed, though? The "kinectless" units are all designed to work if you plug a kinect into the thing. There wouldn't be plans to sell them stand-alone unless the hardware was unchanged. Moreover, this only seems to happen after the mandatory system update on these units. That's also curious.

Could this imply there was some kind of stealth (minor) hardware revision that took place starting with the units that were to be packaged without kinect? Is it a fault that's only impacted certain specific lot numbers? Don't suppose anyone feels like gutting open a noisy unit for some comparisons? lol

You know what's funny and this is slightly OT, is that I get a similar noise like this with my PC's graphics card. You'll hear these weird "squeals" and "high-pitched noises" depending on what game, what kinda of load the gfx card is under. Some games, it doesn't even happen at all and that's the kicker there..

I get these weird squealing noises with The Sims 3, and only that game. It's real noticeable and whiny as the game loads, gets low and practically inaudible while playing, drowned out by game audio. I stopped trying to make sense of it. But this must be what it is.

Makes complete sense as being the issue with these Xbones as well. The noise coil whine can produce is evidently quite varied and would explain why some find it more annoying than others. If that high pitch whine is the kind of noise you're getting then I understand what level of annoyance we're talking about. It's impossible not to hear or get bothered by, especially if it fluctuates.

I suppose this is a positive revelation, as it means it's not really a hardware issue, it's something the hardware is being instructed to do. At least that's my understanding of how this problem I just learned about works. Maybe some coils are worse than others, I have no idea.

Well, thats what has been suggested here, mostly by BruiserBear.

Thats kinda why id like a couple more XBO owners with Kinects to chime in. If its just a Software issue, people can just put up with it, buy a Kinect or pack their console away till its fixed.

But if its a hardware issue, they need to be sending their consoles off to Microsoft.

I have a Launch day Xbox One and i never have my Kinnect plugged in and my X1 makes no noises at all! its whisper quite as is my launch day PS4 and launch day WiiU! i haven't noticed any noises from my X1 Werther the Kinnect is plugged in or not.
All 3 consoles are built very well and for me, make no noises, i also never have any loud noises from any of the consoles when playing graphically intensive games or watching movies on the X1 or PS4.

Its strange that people are reporting their PS4 consoles fan becoming loud when gaming, mine is whisper quite at all times! and its the same with my X1, kinnect plugged in or not! same for the Wii u.
I think this is more to do with hardware faults possibly as a large amount of players are not affected.

Granted i do wipe down all my consoles everyday with a fibre dust cloth and i also hoover the vents at least once a month so maybe its a dust problem?
Also the X1 hard drive noise could be because the users hard drives are nearly full? i know both my X1 and PS4 are not even 50% full yet! and my WiiU has a usb 32gb flash memory expansion connected to it, and obviously is silent.

So again i just wanted to chime in and state that my X1 is silent with or without the kinnect plugged in, as is my PS4 and Wii U.
I hope people effected find the solution and get back to gaming without problems.

Alright, here's a video I recorded with an actual microphone (MXL 990)

Sorry, saw your tv and all I could think about was the PSP Go.

Hope you, and everybody else, can resolve the issue as soon as possible. ;)

Yeah, it's that Sony 3D monitor, I like that it has a PSP Mode to make those games full screen when you use the component cables.

I don't know, it's strange. I have a launch period unit that emits the exact same sound, even in standby, only it's really, really quiet, to the point that I had to kneel right next to it after watching one of these videos to recognize it. My Xbox 360 Slim, which I consider to be a very quiet console, is louder when turned on, and both are mostly drowned in ambient noise, even when I close my window (it's usually open).

Something is happening here, I don't know why the loudness varies so much.

That's interesting. Possible that this could be the new YLOD?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, nobody has had a console fail because of this, it's just annoying noise.

I haven't compared the noise in awhile basically because my PS4 is loud when it is running TLOU:R when I'm on multiplayer. My X1 stays on because of the hdmi input. I have never put my ear up to it but the only sound I hear is coming from the PS4 usually.

Uh, it's more than just an annoying noise. It should not sound like that. It sounds like it's about to keel over and die.

I'm following this closely because I have an SO Bundle pre-ordered....which is a Kinectless bundle.

What? You just let what could be something that's not a huge thing make you return it and you haven't opened it yet to play? Ha.. you should return it. Who waits days to open up their brand new consoles? This is wild to see all the people in here all "concerned" now and now NOT going to buy an X1 because of this. lmao, classic.

Ha ha.. great joke.

Meh. I've been busy with work, haven't had a chance to open it yet. It does concern me considering others have RMA'd to MS and got a unit back with the same issues. I don't want to go through multiple returns.

Keel over and die? I wish I could hear this noise in person. The noise in the video sounds like mine when it's in standby (Day One unit with Kinect plugged in), but it's not very loud at all.

Just wanted to say that i replaced my xbox today at the store were i bought it.

And it makes no noise! :D

What about in standby?

Threads like this are sometimes why I hate the internet.

I just got an XB1 a few days ago and so far it's been quiet as a church mouse (so quiet to the point that I'm worried it isn't even working because I don't hear a thing). Now I'm worried that the problem is eventually going to pop up, because I'm paranoid about those things.

If you didn't get it after the initial update, you should be ok.

I haven't read any cases of it popping up later, seems to happen out of the box or not at all.

An official response from the thread I created on preview forums.

Hi RealSenjuSage,

We have heard that a small number of Xbox One owners in some situations may hear a noise from the console that is too loud. While this does not affect the safety or functionality of the system, we’re asking customers who believe they are experiencing this issue to contact Xbox Support: http://support.xbox.com. At the request of our customers, we will exchange those consoles for new systems.

Thanks so much for taking the time to provide feedback and for your participation in the preview

There you have it. Doesn't affect safety or functionality of the system, but you should go ahead and contact xbox support, and, at your request, they'll provide new systems.

More worrying is the lack of anything official about the issue.

We have one now.

I picked up my XBO today. Same problem.

It really put a dampener on my evening. : /

Edit: Noise in the dashboard. No noise while in a game.

No offense but there you don't have it. There's people on the official support forum that claim MS sent the console back with the message that nothing was wrong.

The point is that there's an official response to it now, and the quite active engineering team which did the responding, and are also likely the ones who're going to fix the issue if that "how to get rid of coil whine video" posted up top is really what's going on, are now fully aware of it.

How about one from Kotaku?

http://kotaku.com/microsoft-says-theyre-replacing-abnormally-noisy-xbox-o-1632621040

Is your Xbox One making too much noise? Send it to Microsoft and they'll give you a new one.

The folks behind the Xbox say they're offering replacements for the "small number of customers" affected by a noise issue that seems to have grown more prevalent after the Xbox One launched in a number of new countries including Japan, Portugal, and Greece earlier this month. Over the past few days, people have taken to various web forums to complain about their Xbox Ones making abnormal amounts of noise right out of the box.

I asked Microsoft about the issue today, and they sent over the following statement:

We have heard that a small number of Xbox One owners in some situations may hear a noise from the console that is too loud. Kind of a pain, but hey, hardware is hardware.

I think they can fix this with an software update, but Microsoft must be aware of it. Media haven't picked it up yet, and complaining to support on Twitter doesn't help.

Watched the video. Surely a bad batch because nobody would design something with that flaw in this day and age, certainly not an entertainment item.

This isn't something you can patch away, it's a component physically creating noise.

Just tried standby, i had to put my ear against the console and then i heard very very little.

Besides some people may deny, I am pretty sure that this little noise in standby is normal. I have the same with my version (with Kinect) since day one, and heard many people saying the same.

Now, I dont know how loud is that sound people are saying. I can hear a bit of what I believe is my HD nowadays when my room is very quiet and the console is on. But I believe that if it was something to worry it would have showed some problems already. And the problems I had I believe are just about the SO instability (that is actually a lot more stable now, after the last updates).

I bet that if you washed your dirty Doritos hands before playing your Xbox wouldn't make any noises.

My cousin bought one and his one doesn't make noises.

Entire video? Because from what I saw he appeared to solve it by simply modifying (disabling) the dynamic frequency scaling of the CPU. if the issue on the Xbox One is a power state related matter and there simply needs to be more voltage going to a specific part of the system when it's on the dashboard without a game running, then an update can almost certainly fix it. It doesn't appear to be damaging or preventing xbox ones from working based on what little information we have at the moment.

It's just an annoying sound. Could certainly be a physical issue, but then it also be something easily addressed with a software update.

Definitely not normal for everyone. My system that I got in April has never made any sound approaching such noise levels. It's consistently so quiet that I never hear it running at all even while gaming. I need to physically put my ear to the system in order to hear anything at all when it's up and running, and even then it's damn quiet. The only times I'll hear noise is when I shut the console off and you hear what sounds like the hard drive or something else winding down. And when I turn it back on, you hear hard drive getting ready. Loudest noise it makes period is when I perform a hard reset by holding down the power button at the front. It makes this sound at a pretty decent volume like something is stopping pretty abruptly.

Many Xbox Ones probably work just fine with the noise without leading to any kind of issue, but because that may be the case doesn't mean it must be a universal thing across all xbox ones. I don't quite understand it myself, but with a lot of preview updates, some people seem to get entirely different sized updates compared to others. Some say they get fairly large ones quite regularly, whereas I think I've only seen a single one in the 1GB range, and everything else is like 250-350MB. So maybe there's some tiny differences between the models which leads to this sort of discrepancy.

As an example, my entire 1410 preview update was, if I remember clearly, 250MB. What about everybody else?

Pretty good video really showcasing just how weird an issue it is. Do you happen to have a friend by chance that has Kinect? I'd LOVE to see a similar video with it plugged in to see if it really stops making the sound.

Or is that a Kinect there on your desk?

I've only got the original Kinect, and I don't know anyone local who has one.

While I'm super curious as well, I'm content to wait a week or two and see if reports come in that people are getting back units from Microsoft that don't make the noise.

Have a feeling that it may not. Could be something requiring an update to fix it, but it's definitely worth sending in. As since they are now aware of it, maybe there's a good chance you get back a good one. I'd still call support anyway in case you haven't. Will help them better isolate which systems have this issue even if you don't intend on asking for a replacement on the spot.
