Disney releases first concept art for "Moana". It looks nothing like Wind Waker.

Walt Disney Animation Studios revealed plans today for Moana, a sweeping, CG-animated comedy-adventure about a spirited teenager on an impossible mission to fulfill her ancestors’ quest. In theaters in late 2016, the film is directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog, Aladdin).

In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

“John and I have partnered on so many films—from The Little Mermaid to Aladdin to The Princess and the Frog,” said Clements. “Creating Moana is one of the great thrills of our career. It’s a big adventure set in this beautiful world of Oceania.”

“Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself,” Musker said. “She’s the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences.”

Similarity aside, the art looks very good.

Been keeping up with this on /co/ for a while, but this is NOT what I was expecting at all! Color me intrigued.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Why bring up Wind Waker? Because of the swirl and it being a ship on the ocean? Characters look more like Mark of Kri/Lilo and Stitch anyhow.

I'm not sure how you could make a cartoon about sailing on the ocean and not have some similarities to Wind Waker.

That said, the little artwork I can see doesn't strike me as particularly Wind Wakerish.

I'm sure the final product will be much more varied. As far as a first shot, it's mysterious and beautiful, and I love it.

This. I was expecting a main hero with cat eyes and a more obvious homage going by the thread title.

Indeed, the OP is really reaching with that comparison. I never would have associated the teaser image with Wind Waker if he hadn't brought it up.

Gotta love when they sandwich a bad movie inbetween two good ones.

I am very intrigued about this one. Looks like an epic Disney adventure to me!

The directors have a good track record so it has promise.

I kinda wish Wind Waker looked like that. And I kinda hope Zelda U does look like that. (Seems close from the current preview we've gotten. But then again, SS looked brighter and cheerier before they dulled it down too.)

This sounds fucking great. This won't have the worldwide appeal of Frozen, but I bet it'll have a far more emotionally complex story. I'm super down.

Looks great, that body of work is good at best though, with Aladdin being the best of that bunch. Princess and The Frog was butt.

Hope it's great.

So, from Walt Disney Animation Studios, we're getting Zootopia and Moana in 2016; nothing in 2015? :(

EDIT: Beaten.

I was just looking at this and also thought it was odd.

However, I think there are two Pixar films scheduled for 2015 (Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur), so maybe they are trying to balance that?

Yeah, nothing in 2015. If it makes you feel any better, there's going to be 2 Pixar movies next year (Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur).
Makes sense, after Tangled, Pooh, Ralph and Frozen. With BH6, I'm guessing they'll take a breather but working on this while Pixar gets 2015.

Yeah, nothing in 2015. If it makes you feel any better, there's going to be 2 Pixar movies next year (Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur).
There's also going to be an amazing short film called Lava that will premiere during Inside Out. Can't wait to see the full film again.

wait 2016? Did this project get bumped up? I Could have sworn it was originally coming in like 2018 and was depressed when I heard that.

Sweet. I don't think I knew this had received an official greenlight, so nice to hear we'll see it in two years.

I don't understand, how do you determine the worldwide appeal of a film from a single piece of concept art? And its emotional complexity?

Fuck yes.

Lather a sick shamanistic war-drum soundtrack on its supple flesh and I will practically masturbate onto it in the theatre and lick it spotless after
