VideoGamer.com Video Preview of Sunset Overdrive

I think it's fine for videogamer to have their own thoughts and disappointments with the game at 2 hours, but I can't say all the people upset at them are in the wrong. They themselves basically made fun of the US outlets for not liking Alien Isolation as much and made a parody video for it and how America would love it if they included a "dude bro" patch. So they obviously took some of those reviews or viewpoints to heart. So really, just goes back to the old saying of different strokes for different folks right?

Wow, biggest SSO thread yet that isn't resolution or exclusivity centric.

Can I ask everyone talking about how this is confirmation of the game's (lack of) quality a question? Have you guys seen any of the other, generally quite glowing, preview impressions? 'Cause this really is very much an outlier.

Still early to call it, but pretty much everything they've mentioned has been stuff I've been concerned about, from the off putting humor I've seen in gameplay so far to the gameplay and combat.

Still have it pre- ordered and loaded, so I guess I'll hope for the best.

I watched the preview and the first item you get is a shotgun shaped like a penis. Obviously poor humor but what I wonder is how do things like that relate to the profanity filter? I think the sophomoric gags combined with an M rating are going to polarize reviewers.

I think this is going to be like Dead Rising where either people love it or hate it. I hope for the best as well.

Original Dead Rising is still my favorite Dead Rising, I tried really hard to like 2 and 3, but they felt like weak iterations that tried to hard in a lot of areas.

I've seen plenty of positive previews from various sites, a couple of people on my friends list have the game and although they can't go into detail they have hinted they like it.

The guy at Videogames.com is entitled to his view, I have no problem with what he is saying, everyone is different in tastes aren't they ? I have to be honest though I'm feeling a little low on enthusiasm with gaming as a whole at the moment. There seems to be more negativity than positivity than I've seen for a while.

I liked 2, but I have to agree with 3. I tried to really get into it but Nick is not that likable of a main character. At least the gameplay is enough to keep it from being totally awful. Frank West is still the best main hero though.

It's just been a down year. The hyped games have been mediocre and seem to have a very cynical view of their players. I think next year will be a lot more positive.

Do I win a prize for talking about my penis on the Internet???
Yeah I'm gonna wait a week for reviews and general GAF impressions, still hoping the game is awesome and maybe just the first couple hours are bland.

These guys problems with the game are exactly what I was concerned about.

Brainless dynasty warriors level enemies, lack of any penalty for death, fetch quest missions, unlikable characters, pointless story, and lack of challenge or variety.

I think this one will go to the spring/summer on a sale pile unless I hear otherwise from giant bomb.

The biggest problem is how they say the game barely puts up any resistance to you or challenge. Dying means nothing, the auto aim is super generous, the enemies barely pose a threat. These are all things that I got hints of from video footage.

They can't all be winners. Still loving the xb1 for forza horizon 2 and MCC.

Wow I didn't notice that. I like the humor and tone in general, but vulgar stuff like this only serves to repel me, and that goes for anything.

Infamous (imo) was terrible, some of the most mind numblingly boring combat (Look at Prototype, THAT is far more "super hero" like with its powers/combat), Infamous just seemed to hold back, it felt more like a generic tps game then making your character feel like he actually had powers, most of them felt like reskins of any number of things you'd find in other games.

Then you have the side-quests, there was like a handful of them and none of them really have depth, doing them over and over got old really quickly.

I feel the same way about most of Ubisoft's open world games when it comes to repetitive designs (towers unlocks in both AC and Far Cry and all the focus on "collectibles") imo make open world games far too shallow and doesn't allow them to have nearly as much depth or variety as they could have.

If they dropped all the repetitive "padding" out and doing the same basic things over and over and focused all of the development spent on this on actually having more interesting story missions and variety in gameplay it'd be far more enjoyable.

That's why I like games like TES where they don't really focus on the repetitive things in open worlds and more on story/characters and exploration, that's why I am looking forward to Dragon age and The Witcher 3 to show what better open worlds are like.

Back on the topic of Sunset, I really hope it kicks in later on, I have hopes for the game but am going to wait for the reviews first.

I won't disagree, as a franchise it was totally a shooter. But you just went on to list a load of games that are heading way more in the RPG direction. While there's elements of customisation and levelling to inFamous/Crackdown, they are predominantly open-world games, which I'd definitely distinguish from RPGs.

And if that's the kind of problem the guys at Videogamer find with it, they need someone like myself who is pretty satisfied by open world games in any form.

Your opinion is great, but dinging it for it not being something you like is not great for a site like Videogamer. It's fine if you're Roger Ebert and people want your opinion, but disliking a genre/type of game and reviewing it or giving impressions is not a useful to a readership already interested enough to be reading an article on it.

It's like me trying to review a 2D shooter. The extent of my review/impressions would read "I'm bored". Even if I know there's depth and impressive 'craftsmanship' there.

Meh. I have it preordered, will keep my preorder, and do what I always do... Judge for myself once the game is released.
Luckily I make a good living so a wasted $60 is not going to make or break me.

Do not get me wrong, I prefer to spend money on things I like and enjoy, but especially so far with this current generation of consoles, it feels like we are in an extended launch period, and nothing has been amazing. A few games have come close, but nothing has been a system seller imho.

If it does not wind up being that great of a game, will not be the first time that has happened, and will not be the last time it happens either.
In fact I can say I think going into games these days with lower expectations has actually made me enjoy games more. I now wind up being pleasantly surprised.

It is a shame when all is said and done though. I wish I could have high expectations and even more so I wish they were met. I just tend to be a realist, and the realist in me so far has said to have low expectations and hope for the best.

With that said people are like assholes with opinions. Wait, did I get that backwards?

Last night a streamer said he had to disable the soundtrack when streaming, if that addresses some concerns from people about the sound. (Not 100% sure but that's what I think he said

Arent you people making a big deal out of it? The only weapon I saw that was something like it, was that shotgun, and neither that is that much obvious!

I mean, it is much less vulgar then this:
What I find funny anyway. Lol

I'm not usually laughing at those things (I think all the dildo jokes in recent open worlds games aren't funny), but I gave a chuckle at its name. "Flaming Compensator". :D

The videogames.com guy is of course entitled to his view, I just have to wonder whether or not the "I KNEW IT!" crowd had seen anything else, since I haven't actually seen most of them before in SSO threads :p

Must be my old eyes-

Literally none of the points raised by the video in the OP are in any way related to graphics.
They repeatedly mention that the game looks great.

Glacial in this thread referred to the speed of the grinding/movement and bland referred to the gameplay/campaign mission side of things.

I wonder if Fuse had of remained like it was (Overstrike) when first shown, would people have been decrying it for being "too silly" or "hipster" and all that bullshit?

Maybe these are the kind of "complaints" they got that caused them to change it. Not to mention the humor isn't that different to Saints Row and that gets praised to hell and back.

First year wasn't good on PS3/360. It never is when games cost 10mil+ to make and 2 years development.

Unfortunately you gotta give it a chance, it's not like the PS2. It can be, but all the games were to the quality of the indie games we're getting.

This past 11 months has been amazing to me...lol.

Game preferences really make a difference in that outlook.

The video is what put me off more than anything they said. I've been a fan of this game and have talked positively about it since I picked up a ONE. Maybe because I wasn't behind the controller but that bouncing and grinding got tiresome on the eyes. How soon will it get old? Just not going day one is all. Will wait for some impressions first.

Edit: I know they've been showing this kind of footage for months now. Maybe the guy controlling just sucked this time and I'm having issues with that.

I don't know about the validity of the preview but I'm not going to lie - after being really excited about the game the footage here looks rather boring in a very style-over-substance kind of way. Fun weapons and aesthetics aside there doesn't seem like there's a lot to do other than easy traversal and horde pickings. Even from a mere 2 hour long impression, this isn't a game that should be holding it's punches.

Call it skepticism but I really wonder how the game will actually stand up once you get over the zany aesthetics. It looks shallow, and I say this as someone who wanted to pick up an Xbox One for this game.

First thing I hear is "InFamous is dull". So I just turned it off. No need hearing an impression from someone who just has different tastes than I do. I hope the game turns out to be good. Really looking forward to playing co-op with a bunch of friends.

I think it's time for the pendulum to swing back over to the games of yesteryear that seem to have been forgotten. Games like Banjo, Jak and Daxter, etc. Open world type games that are rich with humor and fun and can be played in front of the family.

I have SO loaded up and ready to go and don't mind cursing at all. But even I plan on putting the filter on for this game. It looks fun and I like what I've seen but I can also completely understand why people think SO is just a bit too much. That's what the developers are going for... And they seemed to have nailed it.

My point is that they are hit or miss. And they may have missed big time with Sunset.

In every video, I'm bored watching them just running around the quiet city with little music to speak of. When they first showed the game, I thought for sure they would go balls out Jet Set Radio style. Maybe there are some good tracks, who knows?

Ah, okay. Yeah, I'd agree they aren't consistent when it comes to soundtracks.

ITN wasn't great...

That doesn't sound promising...at all.

That's not the worst of it.

Rumour has it that MS are in salvage mode with this project. Focus testing, now backed up by early reviews is painting a very negative picture of the game. Claims of repetitive, dull, lacking in polish, lacking in appeal, inconsistent, lacks direction are often heard in hushed tones when Sunset Overdrive is mentioned.

MS have distanced themselves completely from Insomniac, their only interest now is to try and recoup the money they invested into development as well as money for their contractual obligation to market the game.

It's not all one sided, Insomniac are apparently very distraught of having backed the wrong horse with the Xbox One. They were hoping for a five million seller, but with the Xbox One install base in dire straits and the market's complete rejection of the Xbox brand, well, you get the picture.

That's why Insomniac allowed Sony to use the font for their recent sale. It was a reconciliatory measure to get back in Sony's good graces, so they'd allow them to make more games after the Ratchet and Clank reboot.

It's pretty much a disaster from any perspective. Insomniac weeping, MS ruing, critical backlash, market on course to reject the IP.

It's perhaps the biggest disaster we'll see in gaming, rivalling that of ET. There will be documentaries about this game for years to come...

LOL can't even spell "rumor" correctly

There goes all your credibility

It won't break until after release (everyone wants to try and save face), but it will surely be epic when it eventually does.

It's been 7 days since Phil Spencer has tweeted anything about the game. He was playing it for a while and now all he does it watch TV, so I think he's bored with the game as well. This sucks as I had high hopes for the game.
