People love The Wind Waker, but that was far, far worse than this in terms of giving you an interesting open world. One could go many minutes without having to control anything or coming by an interesting location. If people didn't have a problem with that before, why do they have one now?

Some people did have a problem. It was a big boring ocean to sail, hence the reason everyone loves the swift sail and of course the ability to warp.
Lot of people take offense to those giving an honest opinion of the video, which showed bland environments devoid of anything besides trees and grass.

I'll be there day one for this, but I'm not going to sugar coat or make excuses for that demo. They should've waited until they had something worthwhile to show.

Maybe it's for the best for now, it was just a way to give fans a new look at the game as its in development. All it will take is a big E3 trailer and this showing will be history.

I guess people don't like "in development" stuff. Seems to always turn into "this game looks like ass". It's in development, so people should just be happy to have a rare chance to see the early game in action and look forward to the future. Perhaps Nintendo (or any developer for that matter) should avoid show early game footage...almost always seems to backfire.

Visually I love the color usage in the game, seems very bright, and use of Cell shading techniques is welcome.

I understand it was probably an early build, but man did it look vacant. I hope there's things to do to get side tracked on, doesn't make sense to make an open space of Link to run around in, and give him nothing but predestined dungeon locations.

Hope we see a better build next year with things to actually do outside of Dungeon's, cause if not, it's a waste of unused space, like in Twilight.

This may be frowned upon, but I found Darksiders 2 to have the right amount of open space to explore, find secret places, fight hidden bosses, and do side quests.

Hope this new zelda can follow that formula with the updated combat that looks neat(Slow motion aiming).

I liked the video and I look forward to playing the game and I prefer this kind of showing rather than a tightly scripted 2-min trailer of the setpieces. But OK, that's just me.
It's a good way to show off the game in theory. They just completely botched the execution.

I hate to say it but they shouldn't have shown this.

As much as it pains me to say... I agree.

I'll still get it and a Wii-U though, it'll be like a "Skyrim-for-kids" type gift. If they add in content to make the maps less empty then I'll definitely play it as well.
I'm just upset they decided to show the whole game so soon.

Everything this game had to offer, ruined and spoilt.

Did you like Wind Waker? I'd imagine traversal is like that; where it's less about numerous interesting things on your path and more about several sparse focal points. Though this world looks beautiful in comparison to the bland sea Wind Waker has, and it's probably a hell of a lot more dynamic and interesting. I hope to find hidden caves and dungeons and stuff but I'm not holding my breath. Just being able to explore such a huge world in the Zelda universe is great in my opinion. Looks less restrained.

Whole game? What am I reading.

This one is beautiful, you can just glimpse the beauty of the grass, the off-screen footage destroys this because the contrast is too high, but it's ok here:

Now let me cut all of this grass and I'll be a happy man.

heres a zoomed in version of that trailer ;p

JUST because

Thanks for that. It actually enjoyed it more because I could concentrate on looking at the game. I wonder if they'll ever add anything like a hunger meter in Zelda. I mean since you can pick and eat apples and hopefully fish, I think it'd be cool if there was a reason to. One of the things I never liked about the 3D Zelda's was how you had your set items and that was that. What I always like and wanted was more items. Maybe not random but instead of just one sword, there are many kinds with different styles from different regions and quality. I like that kind of stuff in an open world.

I don't want to annoy any fans but I think it'd be cool if they took the survival / adventure parts of Minecraft and made them fun in Zelda.

Street Fighter 5 and now this! My head is gonna explode!

This looks amazing! And lol to all the haters judging a game that still almost a year away from being released and the video isnt even a direct feed.

haters gonna hate.

I can't believe they're trying to pass this off as a Zelda game when it doesn't have any dungeons or bosses
Actually the dungeons were right in front of us all this time, literally in our faces. Those horses - you cut them open and craw into their entrails. It gets quite graphic from there.

ITT we learn that people like better CGI trailers. SMH.

Can't wait for the general backtrack in a year. (Although the hip thing is to hate the new Zelda always, so who knows...)

Good lord. Only one dungeon in this Zelda, what is Nintendo thinking? No other human characters besides Link, only one type of enemy and the entire world is grass and woods... Nintendo craziness.

Another clear sign of downgrade is the fact that the game dosent run on full screen anymore. The playable area is now only a small box to the left, while the rest of the screen is taken by the image of two man talking. Here´s proof

Compare it to the footage shown at e3 and you will notice that the old version uses the full screen, instead of the terrible downgrade we see now

Best post of the thread.

Jesus christ some of the reactions on here!

I thought it looked wonderful, the whole point of the video was to build off what had been shown at E3. They said the game had a large scale, here they proved it. They said that vaulting off the horse was a mechanic and not a cut scene, here we see it actually being done. That was the whole point of the video, not to show off extra unknown features (besides I guess the sail cloth and Epona controls).

Exactly this, but a brain is needed to understand all that.

Lol this game will be a joke.. not even Zelda is in it.

Zelda not in the 3 min gameplay demo = no Zelda in the game. OK.
Officially bailing out, you guys will melt my brain and i currently want it for today's PS reveals.

A+++++++

How is possible that anyone is disappointed by this reveal? I just can't... I think, for me, is those Old school gamer perks.

I was in complete awe, I said WOW...

Can't wait for more to be revealed!

I think we should expect auto save or checkpoints similar to Halo CE. I wouldn't be surprised if having a hard drive wouldn't be recommended or a significant amount of space available on tour WiiU internal storage. That way they can populate the area npcs and animals, and further away sections in the distance are continually streaming in to maintain the sense of being able to go to what you can see without experiencing a jarring break in gameplay and exploration. I may be wrong, but it's okay to speculate right.

I'm also getting a action based style fights, with classic Zelda exploration and puzzles.

Fixed.

How does everyone feel about Fallout 3's world? Is that considered dense or barren? It's probably the only open world game I've played, so I'm just wondering for sake of having something to compare...

Was happy and genuinely surprised that we finally got to see some Zelda U footage. Nintendo likes to play things close to the vest...so for those bemoaning lack of tons of new features, dungeons, characters, etc. shown, that complaint is fairly moot IMO. Nintendo's Wii U release schedule for 2015 is fantastic at this point.

I get that the demo looked empty, but I find it hard to believe that the release will have a world that empty. Ocarina of Time wasn't even that empty of a world.

I think all you are seeing is a tech demo. They wanted to show off specific things so thats what we got. The size of the world and a brief glimpse of combat and traversal.

What we don't get are towns, more frequent enemy encounters, a wildlife ecology (which is somewhat alluded to by the brief shots of Epona traversing through an area with other wild horses and animals)

We have in the past seen these demos have problems on stage live. It is easy to believe that they wanted to limit these problems by A: Not showing the game live. B: Limiting the world interaction due to performance problems and C: they just haven't completed world building yet. The game is still a year out... People wanted to see game play... they got Horseback riding, combat and a look at just how expansive the world will be. I think it did what it set out to do. Come E3, i expect the game to be feature complete. If by E3, its still empty, than I think you would have a right to be concerned, but I just think Nintendo is to good a developer to overlook an empty world.

I think it looks excellent and so far it captures the adventure mood created by this original Zelda artwork

I hope they can capture the following for dungeons too

I guess this confirms it, they drop Link's left handedness for future Zelda installments. Doesn't even look like it'll be as motion control-heavy as Skyward Sword so I wonder why.

So does this mean that this is the first zelda with full Voice Acting?

Never thought I'd say this, but I hope this game sticks to the OoT and Windwaker formula. I could use a really good looking one of those.

It looks... really boring right now. I'm even more concerned that it will fall prey to the "open world" issue of having nothing to do in 90% of that world.

Hopefully the final game will be a little more dense with actual stuff. I didn't enjoy Skyrim and I'd hate for the new Zelda to fall prey to the same issues that made that game hard for me to play.
