Rumor: Dylan O'Brien has been cast as Spider-Man

Marvel Studios' Peter Parker will be a high school student, though the origin itself (Uncle Ben & all) will be skipped.

Is this confirmed?

I know it's implied since he's appearing in a Marvel Studios film first (and presumably in costume) before the standalone Spidey movie, but that's all I've been going on when making that assumption.

Interesting indeed.

Lines up with this pretty nicely, and allows them to film a Spidey-related Avengers 2 post credits stinger.

It's been mentioned both by Marvel in the SonyGate leaks & by Variety shortly after the deal was made.

Now sign Andrew Garfield as Carnage
I would go with Cameron Monaghan if you go with a young Carnage or Jackie Earle Haley for older. And don't judge Cameron from the shitty Gotham episode, watch Shameless, especially this season where
he goes completely fucking mental
. Dude would make for a good young Venom or Carnage.

Didn't Peter join The Avengers a bit after college? A 31 year old could pull that off. Unless they are doing the origin story...again.

The rumor is that they do not want to do the origin. They should take a page from The Spectacular Spider-Man television series. Have you seen that?

Chances are the new movie is going to, again, revisit Spider-Man's origin.

The point of Spider-Man is that Peter Parker is a kid who's awkward and shy and bullied by his peers. He's given power and becomes a hero.

It's a different story when skateboarding male model Andrew Garfield is given superpowers.

I understand in the comics Peter Parker gets to date Mary Jane and Betty Brant and Spider-Man gets entangled with Black Cat. Part of that is confidence and part of that is growing into himself. None of that is he's a gorgeous superhunk to begin with.

But none of what you said precludes the possibility that he could be portrayed as attractive. Being awkward and shy and being bullied aren't the exclusive province of people who are unattractive, after all.

I just can't see it as a problem; his character is not dependent upon him having been beaten with an ugly stick, or even just looking awkward as a teenager and becoming attractive as an adult.

Ditko draws everyone ugly.

tbh I've only seen his work on The Amazing Spider-Man so I suppose I'll take your word for it!

I'd take Keith Stanfield as Miles (the outline of him that is),

And comics characters function in the super attractive / really ugly duality.
You either put too many lines in the face, or just enough.

For those wondering how they would start off Spidey in theory, watch the first episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man. Peter would have been Spidey for a while (maybe through summer vacation), & it hits the ground running with a few references to Uncle Ben.

If for some crazy reason they did Miles Tyler Williams Jackson is the only one that makes sense. Disney already signs his checks

This guy seems like a terrible choice. He just seems like a worse version of Andrew Garfield.

Garfield can act laps around lerman and Dylan but he was given some bad scripts

Who knows if these films will be significantly better either though but I hope the dude is decent

The dream would have been an adult spiderman though, we'll never get to that :(

Outstanding choice if true. Considering the leaker was right before- I'm very hopeful.

This would've been so great though, I agree.

Gyllenhall would've been soooo good in that role. He probably wouldn't have taken it anyways though.

Spectacular Spider-Man is probably the best model for how they should handle this version of the character.

For anyone who hasn't watched Spectacular Spider-Man - WATCH IT!

Don't get my hype meter up.

I feel it though.

All but guaranteed now. I figured they probably were cooking one up already- a in-costume CGI teaser at least, they just needed a "voice" to cast to go with it. Making a quip or one-liner for the setup.

Aw yes. Highly agreed, that's the ideal direction.

Ideally for me, O'Brien plays Spider-Man for about 15-20 years, and the character ages in real time, and by the final movies, he's married to MJ and Mayday is a toddler. And instead of killing him off, Peter gets hurt or shaken enough to finally retire, hang up the costume and grow a goatee.

Miles then becomes Spider-Man for another decade or two (same actor the whole time).

Then eventually when he ages out or gets out, it's time for Mayday to take over.

That kid from Everybody Hates Chris needs to be Miles Morales

Know what: just rename EHC to Spider-Man and give him spider powers

I never said Peter Parker was unattractive. But he is not a male model. As I stated before, Peter Parker is more Tobey McGuire than he is Dylan O'Brien or Andrew Garfield.

He isn't though. You'll struggle to find a Spidey comic from the last 30 years where he looks more like McGuire than he does the other two.

Nah there can be multiple interpretations, as long as they get some of the essence of the character in there

It's funny how comic book movie gaf whines about inaccuracies when their very own books have multiple timelines and author runs. But when it comes to films they lose all understanding of adaptations

Not only that, but it does an excellent job setting up the universe.

~ First episode spoilers ~

In the first scene of the first episode, he faces a group of small-time criminals, one of whom is Flint Marko (before he is The Sandman), and the encounter is watched by The Big Man and Hammerhead. It is established that Spider-Man has been interfering the the BIg Man's criminal work over the summer, and this is the first time that they actually have evidence that he is real. Later in the episode, the Enforcers are introduced and sent after him, while he is in a fight with the Vulture trying to save Norman Osborne from a vengeful buzzard. Dr. Otto Octavius is also introduced in this episode, in the same scene where we find out why Adrian Toomes is attacking Osborne and calling himself the Vulture; Peter is working at Dr. Curt Connors lab as an assistant, along with Gwen and Eddie Brock (a freshman in college). And some stuff happens with Parker at high school and I think the first episode is when he finds out that the lab job is unpaid which sets us up for his photography work.

It would be too busy for a movie, but anyone who has doubts about what they could do with a Spider-Man in high school should at least watch that before you write it off as uninteresting. And that's just the first episode; The Spectacular Spider-Man has a serialized plot so everything from then on builds on that foundation really nicely, so it's not just busy for the sake of being busy.

Throwaway villains used for one or two scenes really should have been a thing for Spider-Man movies by now.
