Just saw the character creation on Youtube.. damn. so limited :(

Im still wondering when it opens up the character creation that is. But looking at how little NPCs there are in town was expecting it to be fairly limited.

One thing for sure is that most def the guys behind this game are not too familiar with how to make a more user friendly UI for simple things along with other gameplay features on top of making a fantasy game in general.

The early dungeons are not that great and really can tell not much effort was put into them so far. As its just a bunch of passageways with tiny open rooms where enemies usually are. Really can tell its like cut and paste pieces that were done up by grid based and inserted in, rather than hand crafted dungeons.

The UI issues are things such as when upgrading items after doing a single upgrade it will take you to the first page instead of staying on the weapon category you were just on. Highly irritating if its a category far from the starting one.

Inventory is unable to be sorted it seems.

At Lisbeths upgrade shop you cant see the full detailed stats of the weapons, which is odd since you are able to when selling crap to Agil.

While its nice that identified weapons go to your stash its a bit stupid that there is no way to look at the stats of those weapons unless you are at the stash or selling junk to Agil.

Big minus for combat since MP recovers way too slow and since you need to go spamming your skills to lv them up makes it a huge chore. The fact that you do not regain MP faster by using your standard melee attack was a huge loss of a useful gameplay mechanic due to how this game is about spamming your skills. So causes downtime in combat which messes with the pacing of battles. Its not like we can really give specific orders to our allies which also does not help. Though the allies are helpful in the sense that they keep on top of doing heals / buffs at times. Plus they do kill whatever they are fighting.

Magic targeting was done a bit stupid in the sense that it is a separate tracking system that is rather hard to control when there are multiple targets as it picks whatever target at "random". Its stupid that it does not force the magic targets onto whatever the player locks on to. Considering how they wanted to make magic a larger part of the game do not see why they made the targeting system like this. In the middle of combat its a problem. "Outside" of combat where the player is taking potshots from a distance not so much as you are doing it at your leisure rather than trying to keep the sight on your locked target when there are multiple things around.

The Lock On system itself is a bit of a pain in the ass as once again its another fucking game where they stuck [lock on target switch] to the camera control analog stick. Personally HUGE fucking problem in the sense that this is a 3 dimensional game when outside and the last thing I want is my target to switch due to me looking around with the camera. That will happen a lot. And its pretty sensitive too. Though unlike other games such as Gundam Breaker 2, it does not seem like they added directional flicking of the stick = far / near targets.

All of the above are issues players will run into and might as well tell folks about them first so you know what to expect in terms of problems.

And if the magic lock-on system sucks in this one, then that could make taking on extremely tough enemies (The thing I enjoyed most in Hollow Fragment) an issue because not only will you need skill, but luck as well when they're surrounded by multiple other enemies.

I'm writing this half-asleep so it's possible I misunderstood or misread something. But my main concerns from what you said are the two aspects I liked so much in Hollow Fragment (How fun it was and the epic battles against extremely high levels foes) are the opposite in this game due to poor mechanics. Do you feel the same?

Thanks for the impressions Parakeetman. Looks like it really is an action game first, with some RPG elements tacked on.

Hollow Fragment is one of the exceedingly rare ARPGs I've played to offer so many meaningful options (multiple ways to regen MP, crazy number of skills, AI behavior customisation, etc) in combat. Its robust mechanics (risk, stats, etc) and customisation options also allowed for some really unique builds.

I'm still buying the game day one but it really shocks me to see how little Lost Memories resembles the game I've poured more than 200hrs on and Platinum-ed.

This is a totally new game by a different team that went and used most of the code from a previous title of theirs. I can say this strongly having played Macross 30 for a good amount of time and the comparisons / functionality is most def there.

If one who was a SAO:HF fan is going to pick this title up, most def do not go in expecting Hollow Fragment or anything remotely close. The UI, responsiveness during battle and few other things is an actual downgrade. Dodging and what not works ok, but the blocking is a bit shit with how it lacks the responsive time it needs to be useful outside of literally standing there waiting for an attack and the attack motions + targeting system causes some issues with combat.

This game the fights dont really feel epic. And boss fights so far with the larger enemy types have been a bit of a letdown. Just due to it being hammer away at the target. Perhaps that will change, but these are the very basic motions / combat options that the player has and this game relies on you to grind away with skill usage to progress your characters in the story and the combat system sort of works against that.

Starting Mana potions also the amount of time taken to use one vs how much it actually recovers makes it not worth taking the time out to pop one.

One other irritation is setting skills / abilities can only be done in town.

This game the flying around and what not is fun and simple combat whatnots isnt too bad but seeing how the game is with the character / skill progression makes it lose a bit of the charm. They really should have made it so melee attacks charge MP faster to keep combat fast paced and "exciting". The standard and strong attacks too do not really chain well together either and there is a jarring pause between the use of each one that can be felt when doing attacks. Its not surprising considering Artdink does not really excel in melee combat mechanics. Their melee moves in both the gundam and macross games for the most part consist of general set combo(s) and some other moves activated by character movement, but for the most part it was not meant as the main attack method for their games. As they made titles which were mainly about ranged combat.

Its because its by a different team. My guess also is their dev budget most of it went to all the VA recordings and such, which is why besides them being fantastic for games with flying in it Artdink was chosen as they had a prebuilt engine ready to use which fits with ALO, since you need to be on the ground, hover, air. Which =s the 3 modes of movement in Macross. My guess would be that this title was selected as a stopgap to keep people interested in the brand further while (if) hollow fragment 2 gets green lighted.

Once again do not expect this title to be hollow fragment. It is why Im avoiding drawing any sort of comparisons and talking about problems as they are, not as what they are compared to.

On a positive note the story events / extra event scenes with the characters are amusing and whats expected from SAO. So fans should most def enjoy that. The music is quite nice too, very enjoyable so far when flying around and such.

In closing generally this is not a bad game, but that impression can be had if people compare it to the experience they got from Hollow Fragment then try to compare Lost Song to it. They are two totally different titles by different dev houses and should be treated as such. With that aside fans of SAO should still enjoy the game regardless, esp with the fact that you can play as a good number of characters from the series.

(HF's run animation was hilariously bad).

While I generally do not bother commenting on stuff like running animation, this game looks worse than HFs with how odd the animations are with characters when running around in town. It does not look as bad when weapons are drawn in battle.

Finally stopped screwing around with skilling up in the first area and beat the area boss.

Currently uploading footage of the new desert area and me just messing around killing things and seeing what drops.

That animation when running with the sword out! Nothing moves above the waist! The sword or arms don't move when running. Looks weird...

Also, about your comment about NPC's, would be cool if NPC's could randomly attack in addition to monsters.

its disappointing to see no npcs in the second area too which means that they are pretty much non existant currently. mostly same enemies too just palatte swap.

My vita LE is unopened and most likely will remain that way lol. Considering there is no cross-save. I should have looked into that closer first

Waste of time and money to do a comparison vid. Just buy whatever you want. Outside of the 2ch ratings bombing, both versions are rated fairly well.

Besides that its comparing a console version to a handheld version so not quite too sure what you expect from a comparison?

The controls will be different of course as the Vita does not have a L2 R2.

Go to the first page of the OT I put the pdf download for the controls there for the PS3. Though the game does not make use of L3 / R3, but does use R2 to activate the union mode. On the Vita do imagine that would be touch based, similar to the boost system in Gundam Breaker 2.

Seriously Sony needs to make a final Vita revision with L2 R2 and ditch the rear touch pad. As thats far more useful for the system than the rear pad garbage.
 
Just noticed in the OP you've listed Klein. That mean's he's playable right?

I mean, I was going to buy this anyway, but it's extra-special-day-1-sale if I get to play as my favourite character.

The good news about the game is that the flying does control well as long as you are not locked onto a target, since unless you are real familiar with the type of flight controls Artdink uses, it will disorient folks. So suggest taking lock off of a target before you go into the high speed flight mode.

The story and character events are well done and expected from a SAO game, some hilarious scenes too. Voice work seems to be all of the original cast also.

Overall this will be a title that fans who found HF too difficult or "obtuse" that they should be able to enjoy due to the general ease of use with the controls and overall mechanics. But the UI issues that I spoke of may irritate the more sensitive. As you will be interacting with those menus a lot.

Yeah thats both her and Strea. If we are to believe Bandai Namco the translations should be better for the Asian version. As they really got hammered hard for how bad the localization work was so that they actually made a statement about it. Even though it was a bit late. Its still a damned shame they changed her hair color as that really made her stand out as a character in HF. Even if there is a costume for the original hair color back, it doesnt change the graphic for the story bits.

Its semi related but not Hollow Fragment 2.

as mentioned before this game also seems to have tossed whatever happened from ep 15 and up out the window lol

If I recall correctly the initial announcement for that item had the SRP of 4k JPY thats why am guessing amazon with with it. Interesting that rakuten has it for so cheap.

Have many friends living there and we usually buy stuff from each region to each other and just send it ^^ If I'm not there myself. Retro games I can wait for.....one of their wives hates me though :D I apparently always make him(her husband) pick up stuff for me that she wants but he always manages to find the A, B class for me and she is stuck with C or lower :p


*It's a lie, I order a lot but I like making my friends work for it since they never visit me any more. It's always me going over 3-4 times a year. But even that is ending as our *work* partnership probably isn't extending any further over there :(

This game is a lot shorter apparently. Though there are a lot of event scenes, unfortunately no data from HF can be carried over as its different companies / engines. But those who have played HF some of the things mentioned in the game during conversations will make sense or not.

Overall the game is very thin in regards to content when it comes to being compared to HF which is why its a good idea to push that out of your mind when playing or else be let down lol.

Its good for a SAO game though and really do like the music in the stages. Still need to progress more with the game been a bit busy with other stuff.

Am pretty sure there will be a Western release also seeing how HF is doing. But for the moment the only confirmed one we have is the Asian version w/ English subtitles.

The game though is being well received in Japan also. The low ratings come from 2chers who are trying to drag down a specific platform they do not like.

Seeing how this is doing well too though most def I would like to think that Hollow Fragment 2 / the team behind it was greenlighted for another title using the same system. Which am sure is part of the reason why they went with Artdink to do this as a stop gap inbetween development so the HF team has time to make a fantastic product. As this time around they will not have half of the content pre-made from the PSP version which am sure helped reduce development time with not having to fill things out, even though of course all of the work with converting it was there.

how fanservicey does this get? Any cheesecake CG's similar to the ones in HF?

There is some stuff, but am not done with the game yet and there is not the bed related scenes like HF either, since that whole system does not exist in this game. Or any sort of "friendship" sort of meter for when in town.

Yeah the Asian version will have localized English text.

No word officially yet on the NA version unfortunately.

Its said to be around 20-30 hours to complete the title in one of the Gematsu articles.

The combat isnt too bad and such, just that the boss fights are a bit of a pain in the ass lol.

GGO game would be awesome, as well as they will have a ton of future iterations if they follow up with the
world Kirito will create with the seed

If they can get better writing for the anime, the series could stick around for a long long time.. I'm hoping that happens and they can recreate what made most of what made season 1 of the anime so great...

I don't think I've ever been so torn on buying a game. But I've been debating on getting hollow Fragment or just waiting on lost song... But my impression is that Hollow Fragment is a must buy.... And get lost song whenever it releases?

It really depends on what type of gameplay style do you want as both are quite different. One thing for sure is Hollow Fragment has a higher learning curve due to how the battle system works. Hollow Fragment is very skill based in the sense that its like an MMO and you will have a crazy amount of skills to work with.

Lost Song is more action based though depth and content wise not as packed out as Hollow Fragment.

Both story / character event wise are good for a fan of SAO.
