Fighting Games Weekly | July 27 - Aug 2 | Beta luck next time

Sf4 may have had some stupid shit but imo the life of the game contained a lot of great competitive moments. Great sets and whatnot.

I agree, but I based my list on what is more hype, not more enjoyable to watch. ST is far more enjoyable to watch to me than SF4, but SF4 is more hype.

It is boring. It's the most dry Street Fighter since SF2.

Yeah it's pretty dry IMO. I had a lot of fun with the 10 or so beta matches I was able to play, but I worry about SF5 once the new-game smell wears off. It's pretty much just SF2 + everyone has an install super.

But I'll probably be happy with it at the end of the day because it removes a lot of shit from SF4 that I hate.

Like in 4, how often is lvl 3 focus even practical? But because of lvl 3 focus being super OP as a meaty otherwise, they gave everyone invincible backdashes that constantly affects the flow of the game. Dumb as fuck.

Finally at home after EVO.

Helluva weekend. Shoutouts to Rentahamster, Shouta, Vulva, Blackule, Q and everyone else I might be missing. Made it out of my pool in Ultra, tried not to get DQed in Xrd(same hour as ultra quarter finals), still had to choose Ultra. After I got eliminated the judge told me that I wasn't really out because she made a mistake, then after a quick while came back to me to tell me that yeah, I was out. Got to borrow my stick to KojiKOG(thanks to shouta), was devastaded after his elimination :( Please world don't ever learn the honda matchup so I can fraud my way out of pools again if I get to go to EVO again. At least I'm happy I'm in most of UMvC3/USF4 finals pics because I got to be inside "the pit". Again, helluva weekend, helluva experience. A shame I had no internet access to talk to the gaf guys and maybe play some games :(

See ya guys next time, hopefully!

Bonus: My last match of pools, edited by a proud peruvian friend lol

Ehh

There are still 8 more characters to be revealed and 9 more yet to be played. Nobody is really getting max damage at this point and nobody truly knows how important white damage, v reversal, and a bunch of other things are. It's too early to declare anything at this point.

Tokido using the v reversal to escape a chip kill was awesome to see. Things like that can make things hype. Just wait until ppl actually really play the game. I think tension is what makes things hype. Marvel is flashy, but I personally find it boring. I think Smash is boring. There are a lot of people that find those games hype. We'll see what happens with SFV, but just because it's not as flashy at first glance doesn't mean it will not be more hype than 4.

Did someone say max damage!?

WB gutabo. Don't worry, no one will ever figure out the Honda match-up. Look at Mike Ross!

I love watching SF4 shoto matches. Some other match-ups can get boring there, but there is always tension (to me) for the most part.

I don't find MKX that fun to watch really, because I do not feel the tension in that game from watching it.

Smash is a different case I think...especially since Melee came before Twitch. Matches are exciting for smash players and I don't think they're dependent on outsider spectator appeal the way Marvel 3 and Street Fighter 4 are. Enough fans appreciate the game for it to not matter.

I hope that if SF5 isn't a rollercoaster of flashiness, that it would also not matter in the same way as Smash. In fact, I would prefer it to be that way.

When? We should have a monthly in the 2nd week of Sept, I think. So you can check that out too. USF4 and Smash 4 at the same event too.
I'm moving up with my friend early September (his words, since he's doing the planning), but I don't think I can make that one. Will look into it if iI get there early enough though.

It's been along time since a USF4 major has been anything but exciting IMO. I understand not loving it's mechanisms or pace, but it delivers at the highest level in a way that most (if not all current games) do not.

Never found 3S particularly hype TBH. Not in tournament sized samples anyway.

I like watching makoto players blow up chun. Just cuz you the best character in the game don't mean you are immune from getting grabbed near the corner.

Speaking of which, where did Haitani actually go? I remember he was doing pretty well in AE and showed us that Makoto is still as scary as she was in 3S.

Haitani's original main was Rufus. He moved back after he felt the Ultra changes didn't allow him to play Mak the same way.

I aint gon hold you I deadass fuck with Makoto. I don't even know why.

When I did play sf4, I used her and hawk. I'd be hype if she got in sf5. Hawk too.

Remember the good old days when people didn't accuse Shinkiro of same face?

Honestly, the casual viewer doesn't know which combos are 1 frame links and I think the combos in SFV will look just like the combos in SF4 to them. Only people into SF will know that and I think crowd hype and commentators will be much more important than flashy combos. I also think reputation matters and the concern over flashiness will just end up trickling down to stream monsters so I think it's important to not stress over it as a lot of stream monsters are part of that hive mentality.

Looks pretty bad. Are you sure it isn't from Maximum Impact?

Looks good to me, although I wouldn't blame it for not quite matching the craftmanship of more experienced 3D developers.

In MI she uses her classic uniform, while in this version we see her shoulder, as in her XII and XIII design.
There's an alternate design in MI2 where her shoulders are visible, but her hair is completely different there.

I'm confident in saying that you can't win a tournament without bracket luck by just playing Makoto in Ultra.

I'd say the same for Hawk. At least Makoto doesn't have to deal with Hawk-Blanka. I won't even played Hawk twice in a row on ranked matches in SF4 vs the same person beause half the time you know Blanka's coming out.

Well plug it back in! Unless you mean you sold it or is at another far away home.

Doesn't look that bad, may look better in motion but I am certain that's not from MI.

Guess the next KoF will use 3D models? I'm more interested in it releasing and for its gameplay than how it looks :/

The rumor is that it would be like Xrd. Use 3d models, look like 2d.

Yeah, gameplay is what I'm most interested in as well.

The old rumor was that it would be more like 98 with simpler combos but I wonder if there is a chance that they will give tag mechanics another shot ala KOF2003 and KOFXI.

It was great seeing you dude. Too bad we weren't able to meet up to play a few games. That Cobra Kai rematch is still unresolved! ;)

Did you go to the Mexican KOF/SF4 suite at all? Apparently their suite was right across from our suite. We didn't realize it was them until Sunday night. And they never knocked at our place to say hi because they thought we were playing anime lol.
