I feel like I'm the only gamer that doesn't get Metal Gear Solid

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Honestly I expected Snake and Liquid to be on Raw at some point.

How do you understand what is going on in normal games, let alone MGS?

I'm so confused as to how you could be a habitual cutscene skipper and still play games.

Because gameplay should be what the game is built around, not story. I hate watching cutscenes that remove control from me.

Why should I need to watch some D tier level story telling while playing a game?

Decoy octopus, hot coldman, pacifica ocean, liquid snake, revolver ocelot, the pain, metal gear, grey fox... This series has some awesome names for its antagonists.

Because the story makes the game better. And the game makes the story better. They're part of one experience.

I cant understate how much I absolutely adore the randomized recruit names in peace walker.

As a MGS fan, I can say that the story is laughable garbage and gives me a headache. I enjoy the gameplay. Snake Eater is my favorite.

Peace walker especially. I read everything I could on Somoza, the Contra, and Sandinistas as well as the CIAs bungling of the whole thing.
People shit on me for saying this but i never knew what mutually assured destruction was until peace walker. I also got to see How i learned to stop worrying and love the bomb(an absolutely brilliant piece of satire) because of the strangelove reference. If the games and stories suck, fine... But no one can deny the treasure troves of knowledge those games drop.

Also good game storys help me remember the game better. I feel like i would have given up on max payne 3 if i didnt know why the hell he was in brazil and not new york shooting mobsters.

I also feel this way. I was never impressed with Metal Gear Solid on PS1... even the camera view (top view) felt archaic when most 3D games at the time had a much better viewpoint where you could actually see, you know, in front of you.

And then you have the long cutscenes ('im not a fan of cinematic games) and there you have it.

I'm in the same boat. I tried to unterstand the story once, and it's just straight up bullshit with an interesting premise.

People seem to be confusing complicated and good.

I'm with you, I don't really get the insanity of the story and the gameplay has always felt awkward at best..

And man, I've tried to get into it. Played MGS, MGS2, Twin Snakes, MGS3, and could only hack maybe a third of MGS4 before I ran out of energy. Tried Peace Walker HD and absolutely hated it. Recently played through Ground Zero but that barely counts it's so short.

I'll probably try MGS5 at some point, too, though I have no idea why.

i never really got into MGS either. finished MGS1 and played bits and pieces of the rest and felt the series kind of went too batshit

that said i'm really looking forward to phantom pain. it looks to be a watermark moment in gaming

MGS2...horrible story...what?

Yes, terrible. Let's throw in Vamp, an immortal character with no explanation into the mix. LA LI LU LE LO. fission mailed... Fortune not having any actual powers but believing that she did her whole life. Should I keep going?

They're fun games to play, when the game allows itself to be played.

Watching the 500 hour marathon livestream and reading Wikis to catch up on the story, my reaction to the over-arching narrative is "I can't believe how many people take this garbage seriously." In nearly any other medium (book, television, film) the story and writing of Metal Gear would be considered nonsensical indulgent claptrap, but for some reason people insist on treating the game like it's some pinnacle of fiction. There's people talking about multiple times they've cried during cutscenes, or bleating on about how the games have something really meaningful to say about war or technology.

It's like listening to someone talk about their tearful and emotional experience of watching Dragon Ball Z. Or having someone wax poetic about the savory delectable aromas and flavor profile of a Pop Tart.

LOL, this/

I love MGS and playing it is fun, but the story is nonsensical, overwrought garbage.

Are we naming awesome things about MGS2? I like this game!

Campbell's freak out, Otacon trying to be like Mei Ling, the handshake, Ocelot in every single scene...I could go on.

What a game.

Obviously, not every type of game is for everyone. You can name any top video game ever and there will be people out there who either don't like it or don't understand what the big deal is. But with that said, I think the main thing that loses players in the Metal Gear series is the story. People talk about how confusing it is so often that it's gotta be right up there with Kingdom Hearts for the most confusing video game franchise story. It's probably not that bad, but it's one of those games that you pretty much have to play every entry of the series and get immersed in the story to follow and remember all of it.

I don't even remember or follow the entire story, just a good portion of it. But for me, I enjoy the gameplay of the series and that's why I'm looking forward to TPP. Just give me that good tactical espionage action. Or... operations.

Is it ever explained why in MGS4 they make a point that going into the microwave corridor is SUICIDE! Yet, Snake it just fine. In fact he gets into a fist fight soon after.

And over using the combat drug is SUICIDE!!! Snake uses a bunch all at once (after just going through the microwave suicide corridor) and again is fine.

MGS series in a nutshell:

Innovative gameplay that tries thing no other games did before.

Examples including: reading the memory card during a cutscene, being able to use the menus during the game over screen, killing a character through old age by not playing the game for a week, recording every enemy death and then make you watch every single one of them appear in a boss fight, having the guards peek over the bathroom stalls to see if you're hiding in there (MGS2, it blew my mind), guards reacting to team members not responding on the radio, etc.

Not to mention getting away with making a sequel literally the same game twice in a row and mocking the player for buying it. MGS2 was still awesome.

When it comes to the story, there are really some amazing moments, but without the character investment the moments don't hold up that well. But the fact that Metal Gear has such a style to how it's written, to the point where other games could just hope to emulate, that's part of why people like it. It's not the same-y "awesome dude saves the world" action story. It's weird, but memorable. It's supernatural, but not completely out of the realms of being unrealistic, at least with the technology. Don't ask me how The Pain could mind control hornets because I have no damn idea haha

Vamp was a pet project of the creator of nanomachines, Naomi as revealed in MGS4.

LA LI LU LE LO is what people under control of the system hear when you say Patriots. It refers to sounds you can't make in Japanese or something like that making it a word that can't be spoken. YOU DON'T DISCUSS THE PATRIOTS.

Fortune as with many other characters, actually had super natural abilities and didn't rely solely on nanomachines or the role the Patriots gave her even though Ocelot thought she did.

Bwahahah! My exact thoughts. The S3 plan, fatman's back story, the kastatka chopper, Russian buzz cuts, high frequency blade.

A whiny main character who contributes nothing. Liquid's hand wtf bullshit. Solidus Snake aka the Snake who everyone forgets even existed because he was so pathetically lame.

Big Shell was such a boring place to spend so much time. Shadow Moses was fucking nice.

well that's not really explaining why those elements are somehow inherently bad

people like different things in their stories. it's crazy and fun and probably shouldn't be taken too seriously.

you can take it seriously and come to some pretty cool conclusions though.

Not saying I don't understand why people would hate it, though. That's okay. I get it.

Metal Gear is pretty easy to get at least in the big picture and most of its major plot points, characters and motivations are pretty easy to understand unlike say Kingdom Hearts for example. My solution would be read a wiki, play the games, and watch the numerous videos explaining the lore (Gametrailers did a good one recently). Going into MGS V you should be fine.

Story scenes takes away from the actual game. If you can't tell a story during the gameplay, then you're doing it wrong.

This is such an annoying attitude. It can never be that someone just doesnt like the way something is done, its always gotta be that one is right and everything else is wrong.

I'm so confused as to how you could be a habitual cutscene skipper and still play games.

Ok let me clarify... There are certain exceptions like the Mass Effect series, KOTOR series, Resident Evil 4, Zelda series etc. as they are games that have been able to pull me in with interesting worlds and characters. But for the most part it hard for a game to grab my attention like that, so games like Assassins Creed, Valkyrie Chronicles, Just Cause 2, or whatever I'll skip the shit out of.

I guess I just don't think Metal Gear Solid's story would be interesting enough to me is what I guess I'm trying to say.

Agreed. Lol, I just remembered that there was a boss battle with a guy planting bombs on rollerblades...

Don't forget about the Ninja being Olga. Oh man, so amazing. Forget Gray Fox, that was some serious backstory she had as to why she chose to become a cyborg ninja.

Fucking hell just having the "OH SHIT IT'S VULCAN RAVEN! OH WAIT IT'S AN ACTION FIGURE! OH WAIT HOLY SHIT YOU CAN MAKE IT SHOOT PELLETS THAT'S AWESOME!!!!"

Sold me on the series forever.

Based Kojima for life.

This series has so many memories with gamers, and I've tried to get into this series numerous times. Beat MGS on PS1, and while it was OK, the story just lost me, and wasn't all that interesting. Picked up MGS2 after a few months of solid reviews, good word of mouth from my local game shop, and yeah.....terrible story, gameplay was ok, just never really grabbed me. Started 3, played it about halfway through, and stopped.

I've seen the praises of 4, and 5 looks to be high rankings again. I just don't see the love of the series that other people do. I feel like I'm missing out, any other gaffers feel this way?

It does absolutely nothing for me. Never has, never will I assume. Just not my cup of tea.

Story scenes takes away from the actual game. If you can't tell a story during the gameplay, then you're doing it wrong.

This is such an intensely narrow view of what should constitute a video game.

Creators should have a the freedom to tell a story how they want to tell it without artificial strictures like the one you're suggesting.

I played through most of MGS1 thought it was interesting, but the games controls and long cutscenes, I just couldn't slog through any of the others.

Now Ground Zero comes along, it has good gameplay and decent controls, so I will definitely be playing through Phantom Pain.

EDIT: I played through Metal Gear Rising and thought it was fantastic even though I didn't know wtf was going on.

I almost made a sarcastic thread in response to this but figured that's not allowed. So instead of that, I will beg that you find a way to post your opinion next time that doesn't use the tired "am I the only one" line.

It's almost like games as a medium can have any number of storytelling avenues available to them because of the way the medium is designed.
