I guess her design doesn't really translate that well into 3D. She looks great, though. Now I'm curious about the art for our token scantily-clad witch.

It looks like from the menu that you will be able to craft anywhere ala Star Ocean 2. Thank god, having to go back to the crafting table or god forbid...fucking switch discs on the Xbox 360 version of 4. God what the fuck was that all about.

I don't read or speak Japanese but let's see how correct my interpretation is based on the icons.

1) this looks like consumable Items like Black/Blueberries
2) Possibly Skills / Spells?
3) I don't know what this represents. Possibly an equipment menu?
4) I believe this one was used in the previous games for AI tactics.
5) Smithing Hammer probably represents Item Creation / Synthesis
6) The Book is the Compendium of all the of monsters you fought, places you visited, game lore stuff (Both SO3 and SO4 had something similar to this)
7) I don't know what this is. Probably the Save / Load option menu
8) The Gear is obviously the configuration for the game, Volume, Subtitles, Controller options.

To any Japanese reader, let me know how correct / incorrect I was.

Edit: I didn't even see the small English descriptions below the Icons....nevermind this post. Well I was partially right for some of these. I got the Tactics and Equipment icon backwards.

The English is right above the Japanese, in case you haven't noticed. But yeah, you're more or less on point. Not sure what the second one is. Roles?

The Japanese text has small english letters above it, there's really no guesswork necessary. lol.

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

Not sure why but I wasn't very impressed with what they showed. The combat looked really slow and the animations looked very robotic. I feel like I sense more smoothness and life from SO3 for some reason. Idk why... just something about it feels really off in combat...

It's probably very early in the game from inexperienced players, where there are the least amount of skills and the least amount of skill from the player.

The videos aren't 60 FPS, the game is, so it's hard to gauge the smoothness. Even more when playing the game will feel different from just watching. Also SO3 combat was especially awesome with the postgame skills. We don't know how SO5 will fare lategame yet.

Looked good. Not amazing, but good. And that was clearly pretty early on in the game with limited options and new players.

Looks fantastic, but I really hope that most narrative scenes don't play out the way they do in the video. It looks so lifeless.

edit: Lifeless is the wrong word I was looking for. I'm just hoping that they aren't ALL like that.
Producer said there'll be traditional cutscenes, just not a shitload of them like in SO4.

Alexander O. Smith was one of the main localization specialists / translators for Star Ocean 3 for the English release.

He wasn't involved with SO4's localization though.

Since SO5 takes more after SO3, I wonder what the chances of him also helping with SO5's localization.

I don't know if SO4's localization was worst than SO3's because of the lack of Alexander O. Smith's involvement, but I'm sure it definitely didn't help either.

8-4 was responsible for SO4's localization. I don't know if it was because of the source material, or because they didn't have much input, or if they just don't care about Star Ocean, but we all know what happened.

They just got destroyed by that huge eye floating monster thing.

So NPCs and your party of seven? That's a lot of stuff going on.

Star Ocean still being one of the few series that does "boss with adds" well.

Despite the choppy framerate on the stream, it still looked pretty good.

Good to see that hard as nails optional boss fights is still something tri-Ace cares a lot about, lol. One thing I've noticed watching all these gameplay videos though, is that the camera can be really, really disorientating. Hopefully they work on that more. Needs more natural tracking, because if the player has to keep adjusting it, it'll give many headaches.

It was the source material. But the lead on SO4 is also no longer employed by 8-4 to my knowledge, so either way you'd have nothing to worry about regardless.

Wait? What did he say about the PSP version of SO2 there?

He made it sound like it was coming to Vita and PS4. I however am not fluent in Japanese so it could just be tales from my ass.

I'm pretty confident that another disaster on the level of SO4 won't happen again, but that's slightly reassuring.

Sadly I turned the stream off after the demo ended because I kept getting kicked from it. I jumped back in when Negator mentioned that, and the comments seem to indicate that it wasn't made clear if it was some sort of HD remaster or a PS Archives sort of thing.

I don't think the translation was horrible in SO4. It's the execution of the script that was the problem, 'kay?

Did Lymle have the 'kay problems in the Japanese version?

If there's a stream going on, why isn't it linked in the first post? Or why is it being discussed in a thread about three pre-recorded videos?

God damnit duckroll, why do we pay you?!

I'm pretty sure he said it would be coming to vita and ps4 though...

duckroll posted the link a while ago. From Famitsu

It's over already. (edit: the SO5 part is "over", there's more going on with other games).

Oh man this looks sooo good! The hype is real

The music in the Famitsu vid is in-game right? Does that mean there's no normal battle music? It didn't change from battle to field roaming.

Oh man. If a re-release of SO2 did happen for the PS4 and had a chance of a Western release I would buy it instantly the day an announcement was made.

Wow that actually looks pretty interesting. I've never played a Star Ocean game before, but is the battle system basically one character that you control (and swtich) and then you'll have gambits for your NPCs teammates?
