Apple TV |OT|

Are they taking the piss with those prices?

US - starting at $149
EU - starting at €179

Madness. Not buying at those prices Apple. Thanks.

Last AppleTV was $99 at release, and only recently dropped to $69.

$50 more at release for a fancier box with a fancy remote doesn't seem outlandish. Roku 3 is $99 for comparison, with a less fancy remote.

I meant more the mark-up on Euro prices. 179 euros is $200!

That price probably includes vat

I won't pay more than £129 when the equivalent US price is $149. That's about the same difference between US and UK prices on the rest of Apple's kit, so I expect a similar differential here.

£539/$649 on the iPhone 6S, for example. I'm hoping that 179Euro is a mistake as I can't see any reason for that big a difference. VAT doesn't account for it being twice the price of the US.

Awesome. Excited though I'm not sure if I even want it anymore since the Xbone fulfills all my media playback needs (sans iTunes content). Hmmm. Still within the realm of an impulse buy though.

Sounds like Tim Cook just announced that Apple TV orders are going to start Monday and they will also ship next week.

Awesome.

Can't wait to get our first game out there for it. We were starting to think it would be November for sure.

Looking forward to having my own personal unit for home too.

Trying to be disciplined and wait to buy it in store with Apple Pay since discover is giving 10% off for that this quarter.

Yeah, I think Apple appreciates their ability to remote push new channels with the previous AppleTV and would have wanted to keep that ability for the new one. I wouldn't be surprised if the App Store is fully present in code, just currently switched off.

Rene Ritchie of iMore was asking Apple TV devs to let him know if they had any apps that they wanted to have iMore review for launch. The official Plex account replied "Count us in on the Apple TV launch." So I guess we can count on Plex being available day 1 or whenever the App Store is available.

Those of you with a nas do you run the plex server on the nas itself or do you use it just as storage and run the server on your computer.

I run it on the NAS itself. When I had my Synology NAS it wasn't powerful enough to do anything but store content, but my newer QNAP one has a Core i3 in it so it can run PMS just fine and even transcode a few 1080p streams if I need it to.

I cannot wait for this thing to launch, Siri search plus the touchpad just makes sense for navigating the UI. Couple that with AirPlay and Wii-like, casual gaming, and this thing should be pretty boss. It'll be even better when Apple launches a TV service next year that works across their entire line of products.

Synology 713+, been rock solid for a couple of years. It sometimes chokes on transcoding very high bitrates but overall it's brilliant.

To anyone with the Dev unit, will it update OTA or do I have to connect it back to iTunes and manually install new FW versions?

It will/can OTA update.

Headless Mac Mini with a Drobo attached to it. Not how I would go if I was starting from scratch today, but I'm multiple years invested into this setup now, so I roll with it.

In terms of games, Shadowmatic is pretty interesting. It's available on iPhone already. You manipulate shapes by swiping to create shadows of specific shapes like animals etc.

Used to be a Mac mini as server and client, with ian drives hanging off the back

Now a headless Mac mini as server with NAS as storage and usually the Xbox one as client

Pretty excited about this. I use my Apple TV a lot, every day, but it's just so clunky. I wish BBC gets their thumb out of their arse and makes iPlayer app happen.

Yeah I'm a big fan too. I just can't justify putting wear and drawing juice on my PS4 or Bone watching something that only needs a fraction of their wattage. Being the owner of a MFI controller I'm also curious about the casual gaming aspect.

This is also why I'm getting one. We watch Netflix most nights and the draw from my PS4 is ridiculous. Was going to get the old one but new and shiny means this will be bought.

I'm almost obsessive about the fact that my consoles should live for at the very least their entire generation. Considering I have launch boxes I'm especially nervous. I used to use my AppleTV and Roku all the time with my PC occasionally over HDMI but this new AppleTV will hopefully mean I can hand off those 2 boxes.

Not thrilled about Amazon pulling their usual bullshit though. Hopefully a jailbreak lets us sideload the iPhone/iPad app with mod. They are so dedicated to wall off their Netflix wannabe that I can see them waiting until the bitter end to offer support. And then like they finally caved on Android they'll made it a nightmare to use, seemingly intentionally.

Amazon is only partially to blame. Apple doesn't want them or anyone else competing with their store either and takes a big cut of purchases made, which is why you won't see Vudu, google play, etc.

If you're concerned about openness, buy a Roku.

I use Netflix with a location changing DNS service so Amazon isn't an issue as their service can't compete. If anything their recent tactics and delivery charge changes just mean I will never use them again.

They could all absolutely make an app that is playback only, no purchasing. That's what Amazon Video and VUDU are on iPhone/iPad

Exactly.

While they have the right to not support whomever they want to the idea that it's Apple's cut being the issue is silly and I'm not sure why it comes up all the time. The obvious refutation is that they offer a playback only app on iOS, as you stated.

Would the iPhone Amazon app allow AirPlay to the new AppleTV

The Airplay API is mostly the same as for iOS devices so it should work. I don't believe there is an allowed mechanism to discriminate between devices either. So if Amazon wants to block new ATV they will have to remove the function entirely.

Because there's a shitload of iOS devices between iPhones and iPads. Maybe if Apple TV takes off they'll be forced to support it, but I can't blame them for wanting to put in the effort for an app without all the features they'd like implemented.

iOS apps port over easily. The only reason they have to not support the ATV is pushing their Fire boxes.

They waited until the Fire Phone was a huge black eye before they finally caved and brought video to mainline Android. It's gonna take a similar event to bring them to the table on TV I expect.
