Yeah saw the second one before, instantly recognized the PC98 characters at the bottom. Always fun seeing them. First pic's also amazing

Should probably mention that an ULiL English patch has been in development for a while, and it's pretty much complete.
The English patch is an absolute necessity for the game's story mode. Translations on a wiki are nice, but nothing beats in-game dialogue with well-drawn facial expressions and epic music. Reimu's story mode in particular is great.

I thought these were worth sharing

You'll find character tags at the links. The second picture seems to have practically everyone, even PC-98 and one-off manga characters

To give an idea on how comprehensive the second image is, literally every character, however minor, that has ever appeared in the series canon has appeared. That random store owner Marisa talked to in FS 32, she's there, ZUN's non-Satsuki Rin C63 Circle Cut girl? She's there too. Dolls in Pseudo Paradise Jacket Girl? she's just at the corner! I love this picture so much.

A new Sealed Estoeric History PV went up.

I'm not entirely sure what's being said in the trailer, but it looks like Sumireko and Urban Legend in Limbo are gonna be covered too, which is a surprise (the game only came out this year, and it's already gonna get covered in an anime. Meanwhile, still nothing for the full Myouren/Taoist factions in any of the anime's :/)

I've also been playing through Touhou Rhythm Carnival (which I got interested in because of this Touhou Rhythm Heaven parody) and it's pretty good too. The remixes are actually pretty good, I especially love the rendition of the Voile theme in the game (dat piano)

This is something I gotta try, I've held off on doing the story mode because cross-checking wikis isn't my thing.

By the by ziki_7 from Dust_Box_49 circle released another album of them for free after making tons of music from both their circle and N-tone freely downloadable.
It's a Shoot the Bullet arrange album, and you can download it from their home page here.

The collection is still missing ハルノユメ tho which might possibly be my favourite arrange album ever, I'll wait warmly for it. ;_;
Three of the songs seem to be repeats from their previous releases/10th anniversary download. Only new tracks are tracks 1, 3, and 5. But it's free so hey, good stuff.
Pendulum is still my favorite song from their collection.

Currently going for Normal clears for the other characters in LOLK. Was trying Double Spoiler but I just cannot move past the Oni. Reisen's run has been pretty easy. Her bomb/extra hits are way too useful, so is her shot at full power.

Reimu and Marisa have been a bit more rocky, I think at the rate I'm going, I'm gonna have to redo Marisa (since she's at one bomb only). Reimu has been mostly a cinch because I played her before but also because her homing shot is makes certain stage portions trivial. Marisa feels really bad though. Her bomb does such poor damage and I still haven't adjusted to her speed.

I'm currently at Stage 5 with each of them. Clownpiece is still terrible, but I almost cleared her Moon timeout spellcard in one go, which was good. I might give Extra a serious shot once I have all the characters unlocked for it

The prospect of going through all the Japanese... I remember it was a pain in the butt. Yeah I am going to skip on this one, and all polls for the rest of eternity.

I'm really late on this but apparently a new continuation of the fairy manga is happening. (I stopped going to MotK for a while since I couldn't access it and only noticed now)

Wasn't there a poll only a few months ago?

Regardless, I'm still gonna vote. I think I'm still gonna go with the same picks (Tewi/Yuuka/Seiga/Miko/Kasen) though I'm gonna drop in Ringo and one other character. Maybe Aya or Parsee, though there are so many others I like.

Picking music is gonna be tough because of the new game (Eternal Spring Dream will have to have a spot somewhere because it's amazing imo)

Gerisa by Imizu (Nitro Unknown)

A pretty awesome Touhou and One Punch-Man crossover doujinshi. I'd have preferred to have Mima instead of Yuuka though, but the art is top-notch, as expected of Imizu.

What's interesting to note is that Sagume performed extremely well despite being a newcomer, ranking in 14th!

For those who don't understand Japanese:

Here is the top ten.

Reimu
Marisa
Koishi
Sakuya
Flandre
Youmu
Remilia
Satori
Alice
Aya

And it looks like the Reimu 1st place status quo has returned. I guess it just couldn't last.

I just learnt that there were a few unused songs in the PC98 games. Some of these are actually pretty good. Sunfall and Shrine of the Wind are pretty solid imo

Anyway since ZUN apparently isn't releasing any games this year, I've decided I'm gonna try to clear all the main games. So far I've done 13.5, 14.3, 14.5, 15, and the Phantasmagoria games so that leaves most of the shooters, the older fighters, Tengu Shooters, GFW + HRtP. I might stick to Easy 1cc's for the PC98 games though (since they're really slow to play through, and I don't think I'd have the patience for them.

I went through the omakes in the PC98 English Patch file and there's some pretty informative stuff in here. There's a lot of stuff not covered by the official Wiki (which is kinda baffling). I can understand why they're not covered (some of the connections they make are rather iffy).

But some of the connections are really, really... "blatant" that they probably are intentional connections or references. The stuff about Ten Carat Torte, Elly's design possibly being inspired by Ankou and the SMT bits really stick out in particular.

Also wanted to post that the creator of the Yukari vs Humans, Marisa vs Flandre and Reimu vs Yuyuko videos released a teaser for their next animation (which looks to be Marisa vs Okuu this time)

There's a PS4 fangame being released in English.
Asian English that is. Hong-Kong translations and all that.

That's interesting. I don't have a PS4 yet, but I might check that out once I do. It sounds like it'll be annoying to buy it from the Hong Kong PSN store though.

Touhou PC98 Impressions

Currently been playing through all of the PC98 games at random. So far I've only 1cc'd Touhou 3 (I actually completed the game before with all the characters but didn't realize that the default difficulty is Easy, so I ended up doing a quick Normal 1cc with Rikako). The second clear I've gotten close to is Mystic Square (which I've also done on Easy before).

General Impressions: Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream

(I couldn't find a lot of good art of PODD's cast. I forgot that PC98 characters aren't that popular)

It's interesting to see the series' progression through the PC98 games. 2 has a lot of background based enemies/bosses and while 5 is unsurprisingly like the Windows games, I'm surprised how much of the game is almost like a proto-EOSD.

Anyway after giving the PC98 games a spin, PODD is unsurprisingly still my favorite if only because the game is really easy to read (ie it doesn't hurt my eyes trying to play the game). The screen does still get cluttered up but ZUN uses colors a lot better than in the other games. Even besides that, I just really love the cast and the music so much more than the other games.

Reincarnation, Lost Dream, Tabula Rasa and Strawberry Crisis!! are just really good and the soundtrack is just up there for me both as a Touhou and a PC98 soundtrack (I'd put it as PCB>MOF>EOSD>LOLK>IN>PODD)

The only thing I dislike is that higher difficulties are just unfun because it's basically waiting for the CPU deciding when it wants to die just like in POFV. Still it could be worse, it could be like fighting Muse in Seihou 2...

As for the other games, 2 probably has my second favorite cast from the PC98 games. 1 probably has my second favorite soundtrack. I actually really dislike 5 for some reason despite it being the easiest to play through so far; the cast just don't interest me at all and the music's not that catchy either. I do like it purely in terms of gameplay but I find it boring for every other reason.

Will try and get 2 and 5 done soon. I'm leaving 1 for last just because I am still not used to the controls or gameplay.

I'm surprised by your lack of opinion on LLS, that's usually where I feel Touhou came into its own.
Also I like how PoDD is one of the only games in the series to have a "Hyper" mode that's kinda found its way into a lot of games these days. TD's doesn't really compare either.

I believe Lunatic Yumemi is in fact the single hardest boss in the entire series? Or so I've been told. Like, you thought Shikieiki's vibration nonsense was annoying? Yumemi is downright indestructible.

And yeah I find many of the tracks in HRTP divine. Although since we're on the topic of PoDD, Maple Dream, the credits theme, is one of the best tracks of that era. And I'll always, always take that version of Reincarnation over the remix we get these days.

LLS is my least played so far. I've been more focused on completing 5 and adjusting to 1. That's why I don't quite have an opinion developed on it yet.

I actually was surprised about the Hyper Mode in PODD. I never realized that was a thing before (it would have saved me so much grief lol)

And yeah Maple Dream is fantastic. I'd even put it as my favorite credits theme in the series tbqh.

Touhou 4: Lotus Land Story
(There was a better picture I was gonna use originally for this, but since the artist of this pic has done all of the PC98 games, I opted for consistency)

Decided to give LLS another spin (since I really wasn’t getting anywhere on my Mystic Square clear) and somehow I managed to get all the way to Yuuka (after a total of only four attempts at the game) before failing miserably. That was so goddamn heartbreaking because I got stupid and would have beaten her if I just had one more life (and I had so many chances to not die Stages 5 and 6). Even more embarrassing was that I fell for her Master Spark. Twice. Despite knowing that it was coming. And without spending any bombs on either stock. Ughhhh.

I ended up beating it after an immediate retry though, so that’s all okay (and I checked this time, it was definitely a Normal clear so I wasn't getting my hopes up for nothing like the other times lol)

(I forgot to take a screenshot of the Normal clear screen so here’s one of my score instead)

Anyways LLS is fairly interesting from a game design point. Movement is the major addition in this game. SoEW had a lot of bosses attached to the ground and the penultimate bosses there just sort of circled the screen in a canned way. This game sees the first inklings of the boss movement we’d see for the rest of the series though it’s not quite refined yet. This game also is the first Touhou shooter with Focus (while it was introduced in PODD, that's a Vs/Phantasmagoria shooter so it'd technically count as the first regular/traditional Touhou STG with the mechanic)

The alternating Stage 4 boss depending on your character is another interesting feature. I’ll probably go into this (and the above discussion about movement) into more detail when I do my Mystic Square write up but it’s interesting to see that differing bosses were a more prominent feature in the last twoPC98 games (and that it’s basically toned down for the rest of the series, except for IN and DDC specifically).

A smaller detail I’ve noticed is that context sensitive enemies are toned down in this game from SoEW. Only one boss has this characteristic, the Stage 1 Midboss (and it feels like a symbolic sendoff for background attached bosses of the previous game). It still remains for regular enemies but it matches ZUN’s more sparing use of them in later games. (Also Seiga’s black fetus danmaku are totally in this game as mooks)

Anyway I think that I’ve warmed up to this game a lot since I first tried it. I always liked Yuuka but I liked seeing Yuuka’s PC98 origins. The rest of the cast are all great too especially Elly (I thought she'd be boring but no, her fight is pretty great with the homing scythe and the tiles. I wouldn't mind seeing her come back, honestly). Also I’m starting to think maybe it’s MS’ cast that sucks rather than all PC98 characters being boring.

The stage portions are surprisingly enjoyable, the enemy design is easily the best of the PC98 games, the bossfights are tough but still fun (this is big for me because I don’t really feel that way for most Touhou games), the music is catchy, the cast is fun and most of all
I love Reimu’s homing shot being ridiculously strong. I wish all of her homing shots were this good. I think it might even be the reason I beat this game so quickly lol

While PODD still remains my absolute favorite PC98 Touhou game (and I don’t think I’m gonna change that opinion from what I’ve played of the other games) I think this is a surprisingly decent second.

From NISA Press conference

Wut. I actually had to check and make sure it was the same NISA I was thinking of (it was). Never thought I'd see the day when a publisher like NISA would be bringing over a Touhou game

Still a shocking yet welcome development though. Hopefully many more fangames will be brought over here.

I'm glad you enjoyed the game, it's honestly where the series comes into its own, but it also has a ton of design qualities that just make it really good despite how simple it is as a shmup. It's just really fun to play.

I don't really agree on that? Assuming you're talking gameplay wise. I know you said you'll mention it in depth later but here's my take on it.
EoSD has Patchouli, whose repertoire of spellcards is pretty massively different between characters.
PCB has you start off with a different Prismriver sister for each character and functions a little similarly to Mai and Yuki from MS.
PoFV and MoF have nothing.
SA has Satori who behaves just like Patchouli above.
UFO and TD have nothing.
So all in all there's probably just as many games that don't vary their stage 4 boss as there is games that do.
4Kids translation please.
You joke but Touhou as done by 4Kids is a stupid idea I've always fantasized about. And many others, so it seems!
OMG what

is it really happening

Is this real life

is the game actually good :V
It's... not really... :(
Also technically the first English Touhou fangame was Takkoman. It came out at the same time as the "DDC released in English!" fiasco on Playism.

I seriously hope this is the beginning of a trend and not some one off. I just wish they'd have picked any better game. I mean, I guess this one doesn't really have much text.
But any Aquastyle or Strawberry Bose game would have been amazing! I want my English Devil of Decline sooo bad... Say, are you allowed to do an LTTP on a game that was never released in English?
