Nikkei: Nintendo ceasing Wii U production at the end of the year

There was a pretty sizable gap (several months) between the winding down of the N64 and the first Gamecube games. I'm not sure if they officially stopped producing consoles, but there was almost nothing between early 2001 and the GC release in November. The gap between the Gamecube and Wii was similar, but in that case they had the benefit of Twilight Princess being cross platform.

This is really par for the course for Nintendo since the N64.

It's not par for the course. You could still easily find N64s in 2002 and Gamecubes in 2007. I bought my first N64 six months after I bought my GCN, in fact.

In terms of software dropping off during a Nintendo console's final year, you're right...but that's not what this thread is about.

You quoted someone saying the Wii U has been on life support for a long time. A list of old games makes you prove his point.

You might as well not bother. There are a couple Nintendo crazies in here that are too far gone.

On a side note, regarding a post I saw earlier, I've owned a WiiU since launch, and it's a bad console. I don't know how a person couldn't see that.

Yup. Not a good look for Nintendo right now.

If you're going to discontinue the thing this early, the successor should be out there and in the public consciousness by now.

Production of the console is stopping, not sale of the console.

There's probably enough units in retail channels to last until the end of 2018 at their current rate of sale.

You guys are jumping the gun. This does not guarantee a 2016 release at all.

Dawg, practically everything is aligning toward the direction of a 2016 launch. The only thing that remotely suggests 2017 is past precedent (which is never a 100% guarantee of anything in the future).

It's coming this year and it'd be insane for Nintendo to throw away yet another holiday season.

There it is.

I really think if anything this strengthens the notion we are at least getting the console. Did the report say anything about the 3DS ending production? With such games as Sun and Moon coming up, I think the 3DS can manage another holiday season. It can stand being replaced, absolutely, but the Wii U needs its plug pulled even moreso.

The console did sell poorly, but to completely discontinue production after only 4 years is a sign of a total failure. X360 and PS3 are still going over a decade later.

Sadly, there are no signs that the things will pick up with NX. It is more likely that the dwindling number of enthusiasts will dwindle even more, most likely moving toward platforms that show they can support a system for a longer time.

Time for Nintendo to finally launch NX, so they can close their hardware shop forever by 2019.

Posts like these are why I still read these threads :lol

but yeah, some sort of NX announcement within the next month or two will do really good imo. Really need to build some steam leading up to E3.

Oh well, it had a nice run with me, I went through all the first party games...except Pikmin 3 which is still in my backlog.

Consider me a satisfied customer....Though now I'm tempted to buy one just in case my launch unit die. :(

Besides, what happened to the 100 million Wii owners, back to knitting and mobile gaming? Shame Nintendo couldn't convert that base to the Wii U. Sad

You're going to be able to find Wii Us in 2017. Just because they stopped producing the consoles doesn't mean you won't be able to find them. They aren't exactly flying off the shelf. You could find Dreamcasts in 2002 even though they stopped making them in early 2001.

This is a pretty ironic post.

Also, some people are going to be happy with the experiences they had with the Wii U while others won't so I don't see the point in trying to bring up fanboy talk.

Not everyone has the same definition of "bad."

Unfortunately the Wii U is weak in lot of areas but if you were in it for mostly Nintendo games and some indies, you were basically in heaven, even with the droughts.

Some people enjoyed Miiverse more than others.
Some people enjoyed Off-TV Play more than others.
Some people enjoyed the digital offerings more than others.

Etc, etc. As usual with gaming, a lot of the console's value is subjective.

I wonder if they're ending the production lines to focus on NX production on top of it not being necessary. They'll need quite a bit if they're making the new console and handheld rather soon.

You know how to become irrelevant? Announce your current dead console is officially dead this year and not be replace it until next year. That's how you kill something. NX is 2016. Nintendo isn't stupid.

So in the annals of console history, where does the Wii U stand?

I do not have a very high opinion of Nintendo for the last decade.

Well in in Japan at least WiiU is seeing shortages at the moment because of production problems and better than expected holiday season. While in the west the system is still in good supply I don't think Nintendo has warehouses full of WiiUs anymore so if they drop the production completely it's doesn't take that much time for supply to dry.

Anyway yeah I only got my Wii U less than two years ago and I already feel like I got more playtime out of it than I did the Wii from Splatoon alone. I'm definitely personally satisfied with it; it's just a shame it was such a commercial flop.

As usual I won't be on board for the NX until I actually know what the hell it is and what the games will be

Handheld nx is coming this year. And Nintendo didn't announce this about WiiU. This is a report from a news paper that has been wrong about Nintendo in the past.

While this may be true, one of the main reasons the consoles I mentioned previously were so easy to find was due to the fact that Nintendo was still producing them. They've never ceased production of a console this quickly. They've always produced the previous hardware for a time after its successor had been released.

Edit - To be fair, it looks like GCN stopped production in late February of 2007, so it wasn't too far removed from Wii's launch.

Not necessarily heaven though, there were some time periods were it was just BARREN, nothing to play.

When a game (mostly first party) came out though, it was fucking good and THEN it was heaven.

Wii? or Wii U? The latter I can understand... the former... I takes all kinds I suppose. Was that a typo?

In terms of consoles I've played a fair amount of games on I'd go Wii > Wii U > PS2 > Gamecube (though I love them all). Not comparing the whole libraries of each console, just the games I personally bought.

The handheld, that is selling better than the home console, is being replaced first? The home console, that is dead this year, won't get a replacement until next year?

Your logic makes no sense. Nintendo NEED a home console this holiday.

Nintendo is having such an awful image momentum. No word about NX, no word about Miitomo on the west, no upcoming info to look forward in general with Nintendo other than the remaining games on Wii U. They just continue their radio silence and they will probably continue like this until E3. When people will simply not care anymore unless they give a big surprise event/show/announcement/whatever before E3.

If they already have enough Wii Us made to get them through the launch of the NX, then why would they need to(I'm assuming this is the case)? It seems like it would just lead to more Wii Us sitting in a warehouse costing them money to me.

This year's 3DS lineup from June onward, just off the top of my head:
Kirby Planet Robobot
Ace Attorney 6
THREE Dragon Quest games (two late localizations, one entirely new game)
Localizations of Rhythm Heaven and potentially Style Savvy
Yokai Watch 3
Zero Time Dilemma
The big granddaddy: Pokemon Sun and Moon

This year's Wii U lineup from June onward:
Tokyo Mirage Sessions (late localization)
Paper Mario
Zelda (basically confirmed by Trev as cross-gen)

If I had to choose one system to replace first, it'd probably be the one with fewer games, its biggest holiday title being cross-gen, and also known to be ending production by the end of the year.

NX need to be launched in 2016, they can't be as fool as Sega that let pass one year and half between the end of Saturn lifespan and the Dreamcast launch without virtually any new product or system on the shelves.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I think it makes perfect sense as to why Nintendo would do this. There's absolutely no reason for them to continue producing this system.

I'm simply disagreeing with your point that this is par for the course.

The 3ds is selling better but it's not exactly selling that good. A new handheld is a guaranteed profit monster. A new console is not. They are worried about shareholders not fanboys.

I don't see anyone suddenly stopping caring. Their silence is just making people more antsy and desperate for info

Oh my sweet summer child

Not counting the PS4 yet (as it's too new to really place) I'd rank them something like this:

PS2 > SNES > PS1 > 360 > NES > PS3 > Wii U > Gamecube > Dreamcast > Xbox (original) > N64

There's a new Pokemon launching this fall. The 3DS will be fine this holiday, if they decide to release the home console first.

I personally believe both console and handheld are launching this year though.
