The French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has reiterated her support for Russia's claim on Crimea in a newspaper interview in which she made another decisive tilt towards Moscow.

With three months before France goes to the polls, the Front National leader said she recognised Crimea as being part of Russia and if elected, she would push for a dropping of sanctions against Russia which France had backed simply because it was following German orders.

She told the Russian newspaper, Izvestia, that the referendum in the peninsula in 2014 to become part of Russia showed the "agreement of the people to join Russia".

"Ukraine's ownership of Crimea was just an administrative issue from Soviet times, the peninsula was never Ukrainian," she said.

"I regret that the referendum, organised as a demonstration of the will of the people of the peninsula, was not recognised by the international community and the UN."

A number of Crimeans boycotted the ballot which followed Russia's seizure of Crimea. The referendum was condemned by the EU and the US as illegal.

The links between Le Pen and Russia have been well documented. Le Pen's party reportedly asked the First Czech Russian Bank (FCRB) in Moscow for a $30m (£24m) loan to fund her presidential campaign.

Another psuedo-Nazi funded by Russia.

She said that a month ago indeed iirc.
But yeah, it's crazy how Russia is gaining traction. It's rather worrying. Good thing she wont pass in 2017.

In an event totally unrelated and that has no bearing on this one.

Yeah I heard the same thing about Trump when people pointed out Brexit.

There is a distinct shift to the this kind of populism in the West.

You shouldn't act so confident in a result.

I dunno...

Unless I am wrong, Mark Blyth, who has kind of become the cultural Nostradamus in the last few years, called La Pen getting huge momentum. And Blyth is someone we all should absolutely be listening to, as he alongside others have demonstrated the pattern of Neoliberal failings producing Neonational populism. Brexit, La Pen, and Trump are all absolutely related; don't bullshit yourselves otherwise.

He also argued that the EU will be left on its knees this year, so even that is concerning, but likely needed...

Tell that to the Americans and Brits who think their own shitty political situations are somehow related to France. You may as well be arguing if it rains tomorrow in Saskatchewan it'll then snow in India.

You're basically repeating what many said about Brexit during the American elections. It helps to be cautious, never say that "it can't happen here", because it can.

Why do the people who have no idea what they're talking about have this urge to act patronising and contrarian?

He funds them

He's anti liberal

He's a strongman

He's supporting "traditional values"
Plenty of people meet the last 3 criteria. I feel that describes most dictators if not all of them.

The first is the only difference and I wonder how much Russia is influencing this and how much is just these dumbasses bending over for him for right wing reasons.

Apart from the fact that Russia is financially supporting the Front National, there's also the fact that Putin to the far right represents values that are getting less and less popular in the West. More conservative views on sexuality, conservative views on religion, strong nationalism, a greater respect for authority and a greater propensity to use force and so forth. It's not that hard to see why they like Putin as much as they do.

He's white when the US President is not. Pretends to be strong by going without a shirt. Hates the same groups of people as the right wing. Does whatever he wants on the international stage. Hates the press. They are natural allies, alas.

Our situations aren't an apple to apple comparison, that is certainly true. And I've said multiple times in this forum that I have more faith in the French people to reject far right insanity. That said it is not wise to ignore the fact that authoritarianism is on the rise worldwide, even in France. It is a serious threat to global peace and stability and we need to stand together to fight it on every front.

The spread of the far right and the surge of authoritarian, anti-democratic values is not limited to any one area of the world right now.

I never said that. I'm just saying Trump and Leave winning doesn't increase the chances of Le Pen winning. The average French, British, American, etc. voter isn't going to vote a certain way simply because another country voted in a certain way.

I'm just saying that it helps to be cautious. After hearing "it will never happen" so many times in 2016, and it did happen, I'm extremely nervous when I see people bluntly say those words now.

And an absolute tanked economy.

These guys are all the same - they love the chest-beating, nationalism, and bravado, while ignoring everything falling apart around them.

Instead of making our countries into Russia maybe these right wingers should instead move to Russia and see how they like it there?

I think we can all agree that this is a good idea.

People need to drop the 'Brexit' schtick in these threads. UKIP and their leader, Nigel Farage - the equivalent of Trump and La Pen - couldn't even win his own constituency in the UK and UKIP have a total of one MP. To anyone unfamiliar with our electoral system, that's not a lot. It is, in fact, just one.

Despite the apparent majority of people agreeing with their only platform they still lost by a large margin because our country didn't want to elect that weasel. The public may have voted Brexit but showed no indication of electing someone like that.
