Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

I guess a lot of people here prefer playing their activity log to actual games.

"Hey, don't you want to play Zelda more?"

"No! I want to see how long I've played it already!"

The connection issues that a small number of journalists are experiencing with the left joycon controller is somewhat worrying. Hopefully that gets fixed and fast.

The other stuff doesn't bother me. I really wanted a Virtual Console at launch, but Zelda will keep me busy for awhile, so I can wait. The lack of a web browser and apps like Netflix don't bother me, because I'm sure they will come.

But man, some of you need to stop telling others how they should feel. It's perfectly reasonable to have expected these features at launch and if someone is disappointed in their omission, it's completely rational to be disappointed. Nintendo definitely undercooked this device for launch.

They launched with updated versions of last gen games (call of duty and battlefield) and very sparse exclusive games like Killzone Shadowfall and Ryse.

Probably best not to fool ourselves into thinking they had great launch lineups.
Cross-gen launches aren't updated versions. It's not the same as an remaster release. It was a matter of days between the 7th generation launch of COD/BF/AC4 and the 8th gen. They had the meatiest launch lineups in a long time.

Actually you know, by that metric Zelda is an updated version of a last gen game. Do you want to still stand behind that definition?

And I genuinely can't get over how hung up people seem to be over the lack of video apps and webbrowser..

Because there aren't very many new games on the system. People want to be able to kill time and enjoy the console even when they are done with Zelda and there just aren't enough brand new games. Video services would have served as nice filler.

There's almost nothing in the leaked asset thread, besides some outfits.

Ah, still not going in but that's fine by me. I'll wait until previews tomorrow.

To be honest I'm more hungry for Zelda impressions than Switch impressions.

Some of you are really asking to delay a console by 8 months so they an add a web browser, an activity log, NES games and Netflix.

Think about it again. Eight months delay for NES games and stuff you can do on your smartphone.

Guys.
Pfft I'd rather have the system in November WITH Apps & Netflix. I don't have enough devices for NETFLIX how else will I watch OITNB and Marvel on my GAME CONSOLE, I mean, TABLET.

Screw having the Switch early if it doesn't come with basic apps that will clearly be available down the line.

I haven't seen anyone asking for it to be delayed, just pointing out its a beta launch and for a lot of people that won't fly and the real launch will be when basic apps and more than one game is out.

To be fair, some definitely are. Zen_Arcade did in a post just a handful of posts before yours, and I doubt that's the only one.

It's not outrage to be disappointed about certain aspects of the console.

You, however, are outraged that people would want an activity log.

I wanted to post this, but I couldn't word it correctly. but yeah.

The only issue is the sync issue and even with that's it's unclear just how big of an issue it is. No one gives a damn about how barebones an OS is. You aren't buying an operating system. This isn't a computer. People need to stop acting as if that's a major factor in people's purchase decisions. It's not and has never been.

You aren't buying an OS or a computer, but if your newest system doesn't have all the features your previous system has.. you're going backwards. Would Apple be given a pass if they released a phone that couldn't do anything other than make calls and text? No. People still complain about Sony not putting features on the PS4 that were on PS3, and rightfully so. The "we should be happy with have this" mentally is bad. Yes you can play games on a device designed to play games, but it's 2017.. and it's missing things that literally all devices with a screen can do at the very moment.

I'm not sure anyone would want a delay, but I don't see why it's not a notable thing to discuss at launch.

If Nintendo was coming off a largely successful generation, this may be less of an issue.

But they are coming off their least successful generation in their history, so in my opinion they really need to hit it out of the park at launch and build goodwill around the new product. Missing features and strange decisions don't help the perception at this point. And as we saw with the xbox one, sometimes it is hard to get past a bad first impression.

Jax, your fanboy is showing. The Last digital item to only do one thing was over a decade ago. Be it the PS3, Wii, iPhone, or even a damn TV they all have multi usages.

And this digital item has multiple usages? Play as a portable. Play has a home console. Play in tabletop mode.

I think the most dissapointing thing is lack of Virtual Console at launch, It is probably my favorite thing about nintendo platforms. I hope they get it out fairly quick.

Edit: The system shouldn't be delayed but it absolutely deserves to be called out because with such a poor launch lineup and the lack of notables apps, It feels like they are only getting it out because they said it would be out fiscal year otherwise I think it would have been delayed a couple months at least.

I like Activity Logs and all but you may have a problem if you spent 17hours in it lol.
The 3DS Activity Log is possibly the best thing about it. I ADORE it. Love the whole metagame to games. Love achievements, tracking my completion percentage on Backloggery, checking my Activity Log, organizing my physical games alphabetically and stroking their spines, etc.

I'm the same for films, but not as much. I spend dozens of hours organizing every film I've ever seen from best to worst, making film lists, planning what I'm going to watch in the year, etc.

The Switch should count how long you on websites when the browser and activity log come.

GAF will come out on top.
I don't use any webbrowser on my consoles. I sometimes use Netflix for the novelty of it (like Xbox achievements for Netflix).

It's basically missing all features. It has no features, except Zelda. That's the list of features at launch.

And that's all it needs right now because it's sold out. It might have been a gamble on Nintendo's part, but it's clearly paid off. They can afford to roll out these other features.

Sorry for slightly off-topic but I'm asking in here because there isn't a non-spoiler thread out there right now.

To anyone in the Zelda leaked asset thread, what's the overall consensus? Has enough leaked to provide any indications of the game's quality? Yay or nay?

Almost nothing at all, although one or two outlets risked extermination to intimate that it's amazing.

But someone is always bound to find a new Zelda game amazing. At least there's been no hint that it's significantly disappointing.

That would work if he had a written article to further explain the problem. Now we are just looking at a journalist saying the Switch is undercooked because it is missing two features. He should do a write up to tell us the extend of his issues with the system, not just a tweet.

I'm sure he is writing a full preview and I'm sure that will go up on Kotaku today. I'm guessing he woke up and with the embargo over put a quick impression on Twitter in the meantime. Just because a journalist shares a negative opinion doesn't mean he or she is doing his or her job wrong.

Now that I think about it, has anyone figured at what resolution does the capture button take screenshots ? That would be useful, Wii U could only take up to 720p.

This launch is pretty embarrassing from the perspective of a former hardcore Nintendo fan.

Zelda isn't even a selling point, as a lot of us are content with playing it on our Wii U.

Not denying that the majority of Console launches are terrible, but there is absolutely no reason for me to even consider buying a Switch now.

Activity log is neat, and i look it up pretty often, but it's really THAT big of an issue if it's not in at launch? Lmao

Talking about priorities

I don't know, I feel a hardcore Nintendo fan would be more than thrilled they are getting a brand new Zelda game than if they can watch Hulu on it at launch.

Oh Absolutely. But to play devil's advocate I can do that on the Wii U as well. I'm buying one because my kid wants one and because I can afford to get one. If I couldn't afford it comfortably I'd be waiting it out until more software was released.

That's the best thing to do right now. If IGN or Gamespot or something sent a few messages to Nintendo I'm sure we'd get a response.

I can confirm that I personally reached out and did get a response that they're looking into it. So if anything, they're aware. I'm just hoping and praying for an easy fix. The last thing Nintendo needs right now is some sort of hardware launch debacle.

Has anyone said they cancelled a preorder or something because the Activity Log isn't there? Is it possible that maybe they're just a little disappointed and wanted to voice that in a thread about Switch previews?

Everything has to be black and white, I guess.

Ah, that's good, at least they aren't going all "no comment" on us. Whether "looking into it" means they'll be able to fix it by launch or very shortly afterwards is still up in the air though. Thanks!

This is true for me. As much as I do love Nintendo nothing about this release makes me need to buy it at launch price. I can play Zelda on Wii U, and fuck supporting Nintendo day one when they cant get their shit together. Its not so much worrying about missing, its about not supporting half arsed developers.

Activity logs are neat but man I legitimately forget they exist. I think I've only used it a few times on 3DS and only twice on Wii U so it's not too much of a dealbreaker, but it'd probably be nice to have it back.

With regards to things like video apps I think the ubiquity of them make their absence on the Switch simultaneously really odd but also kind of "whatever". Maybe this stance is something that'll be re-evaluated more once they do find their way on the system since I think they would be appreciated a whole lot considering the versatility of the platform.

Right now I think Nintendo are solely focused on launching predominantly on the promise of it's games, and I'm pretty excited about being able to play Zelda, Bomberman, Fast RMX and Shovel Knight day one on hardware I'm really excited about.

I hope that JoyCon controller unsyncing issue will be fixed cause right now that's the only thing that's having me worried.

I believe it's 720p.

That would be useless, it needs to capture raw pics at the native resolution (if i play Zelda 900p, Mario Kart 1080p, undocked games 720p, etc). Also if it doesn't let you somehow upload the pics you take to decent websites like abload or flickr it's even worse. Imagine the reactions to 720p shots of Zelda uploaded on Twitter lmao.
