WaPo: Kushner wanted secret communications channel with Kremlin

What do they want with Russia anyway?
Is it really surprising that people like Trump and Kushner are fascinated by Russia, a country where every subsequent ruler was able to reign like a filthy-rich god emperor over a subservient and insanely poor population, no matter how often they overhauled their form of state?

They are stupid.
They only mixed with oligarchs, who appear to them to operate without any intrusion from the state. (actually they only meet the ones Putin favors). They admire the way he has brainwashed the Russian people with fairy tales and machismo and political theater and how he has muzzled the press. They quietly wish for absolute power and are fascinated with Russia for achieving it without obvious martial law.

This is not a very concrete answer. I don't think Trump knows anything about Russia's history anyway.

What did they want to talk to the Kremlin about? Why did these talks have to be outside the normal channels?

Did they have no idea how dumb this would look given the insinuations during the election re. Trump's relationship with Russia?

They just didn't give a fuck, they know they are white and rich so the rules don't apply to them.

The motivation here is surprisingly simple. Russia is desperate to get US economic sanctions lifted and Trump needs investors to pay off his mountains of debt and help fuel new property development around the world. This is the ultimate form of quid pro quo. What is shocking is that Kushner et al. thioughf this sort of negotiation is normal but if you look at the history of his family and the Trumps, they've been doing these types of deals their whole lives.

I think besides being drawn to the old school "manliness" of Putin and his regime, it's all about investments and money. Obama put sanctions on Russia before leaving office, there is a shit ton of $$$ to make by investing and then removing sanctions. Just ask that douchebag from Montana that got reelected.

But again, Putin represents the opposite of liberalism so that's a big draw.

Lets face it Trump doesn't even know what article 5 is so other have to step in for his ignorance. McMaster seems content with also putting his foot in his mouth and going down with the Trump ship. Sad.

McMaster is in a damned if he does, damned if he doesn't situation due to still being active military. Refuse orders and get court martialed for insubordination, or follow orders and get locked up through more conventional means when the whole house of cards falls. He's not just some regular toadie who can go "fuck this" and leave or wait to be fired. At this point, I think he's just biding time.

He's not allowed to quit or resign?

He can't retire? There's an out if he wants. McMacster is stuck in a dilemma that if he leaves he thinks Trump will just hire a stooge to replace him. As the days goes by everyone with good intentions end up being corrupted by this administration.

I really hope it comes out afterward that McMaster doesn't believe any of these talking points he's parroting and was forced to do so. It would be frightening if a man of such apparent integrity was actually capable of compromising his morals to such an extent.

I mean, I could be wrong. It's been a hot second since I was a military waifu, so one of the vets here could correct me. But I don't believe it works that way.

And the more suitable alternative is.. Dragging his name, credibility and respect through the mud daily?

Not our decision to make. Who knows what else is going on behind the scenes.

I imagine that for a man like McMaster dishonorable discharge would be just as bad.
I think writing a letter/some other form of communication that explains that he won't sacrifice his integrity for an administration he doesn't agree with would be most honorable, given the information we currently have.. But that's just me.

He's just another lying Trump stooge now, whether he believes he is or not.

That's true, we don't know. But I find it hard to believe there's a good reason for it.

Covering up a crime would be an unlawful order, and he could violate it without concern.

I wonder if McMaster's have gotten his own book in the post yet. Would be quite hard hitting reminder about what he used to stand for.

He could have retired before taking the job in order not to go through Senate confirmation. I don't see what has changed now. Can't find anything saying otherwise.

It's so bizarre how people around Trump seem to lose their credibility. I wonder if why he's staying, is because he knows if he's gone... the world is fucked.

Yup, the problem with that line of thinking is that it helps McMaster deny the fact that he already is the stooge.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
So McMaster is now firmly in the piece of shit, drinking the koolaid territory I take it?

He already established that by lying about the Oval Office meeting with the Russians.

Trump is having McMaster lie and he has no choice but comply. We know Donald asked NSA heads to do so, and McMaster will tow the line under the idea of "following orders". Disgusting.

Which would be all kinds of ironic as he wrote whole book about how military leaders need to speak out when appropriate and not blindly follow orders all the time.
