Finally some semblance of plot momentum, as well as the removal of spoiler tags for something that is really blatantly meant for us to figure out on our own!

Plus a drag race reference!

Episode 5 was very interesting, in how it's different from the book.

If you hate Show Laura, as i do (which is a shame, because i didn't mind book Laura) then this episode will cement that opinion.

Episode 5:
Only Crispin Glover could make a monologue about salsa so menacing

The whole ensemble scene with Media, Mr. World, Technical Boy, Shadow, and Wednesday was fantastic.

Watching Episode 5 now. No spoilers but how fucking expensive is this show? Some of these openings alone got me clutching my wallet and saying "Make it cheaper, Bryan." Lol

Man I keep forgetting that the new episodes go up early for streaming. Hell yeah. Now I don't have to choose between this and The Leftovers tonight.

Each episode has been better than the last imo. Thought 4 was fucking great.

Episode 5 should've been called
You're an Asshole, Dead Wife

It's a good one. Another episode that's pretty straightforward, which I'm sure will be appreciated.

Ep 5 Early Watch Spoilers

Gillian Anderson must be having the time of her life on this show. They gave her two great scenes in this episode. And Shadow finally had his long overdue meltdown. And whew, that Mr. World intro. This show is off the deep end in the best way.

fantastic episode, if twin peaks would not have returned in full form, this would easily be my show of the year

Great show. With this episode in my mind it's a lot clearer who some of the gods mythologically are. There may be gods from Egyptian mythology as well? Still no clue who or what Shadow is supposed to be. I was thinking he was half god half mortal
but then in this episodethe new god tech kid says Mr. Wednesday is collecting monsters, so unsure on that front.
Still no clue the origin of new gods. I would be fine if they don't reveal that anytime soon. Enjoying speculating about their nature and origin.

Wow this trailer for Civilization 7 looks great!

Anubis and his buddy from the prior ep are pretty explicitly Egyptian!

Anubis and Thoth (Mr ibis) Are both Egyptian gods.

In this episode during the opening (coming to America) sequence they clarified how gods (which includes new gods) are born.

Show looks incredible. After Hannibal i was worried he would not keep that pretty style but its in full show here. Show is amazing btw, about to start eps 5 now. Last episode was wonderful.

Great episode. Episode 4 was alright, I didn't really care about the story of Laura Moon, etc. But Episode 5 seems to be really introduce some big players, so the show definitely feels like we're back on track.

Loved ep 4 and 5. Hell, I've really enjoyed every ep so far. It's fantastically insane.

I really dislike show Laura as much as I disliked book Laura. Maybe more. She's like every bad relationship you've ever had come to life (so to speak).

She's not a good person, at all, but I really like her character.

Good episode.

Someone should do a supercut of every time Shadow squints around, looking confused.

Really? You can't empathize at all?
Ironic, since Laura herself has ZERO empathy. She can't empathize with Shadow, is unable to understand his pain and his suffering. She just says every line in a completely flat tone and is unable to feel remorse for her actions. She's a true sociopath but what's funny is that death didn't change her - that's who she was in life.

Maybe having empathy for someone with zero empathy is a weird trait I have

I dont know anything about the books but do we know if Laura acting completely flat-toned in giving a shit is an acting problem or intentional? Cause yeah she really doesnt seem to give a fuck even when she says she does.

It's intentional.

I can understand Laura, but not be completely on her side. She is flawed, however part of the problem was also Shadow, who cannot see/understand Laura's problem. Love can be blind, yeah, but not that much. That discussion about live goals at the last episode should have triggered something in Shadow. If not, he can be blamed for the mess he entered too.

Question is: how much has Shadow of empathy. He is also a flat character. Sure, full of love, but he only gave Laura what he wanted to give, not what she wanted/needed. Shadow only knows to give what he expects from Laura (inconditional love).

Part of a relationship is to care for the other. Sure, Laura was abusive. Shadow was negligent (not intentional, but...).

Best episode of the season.
First episode I really liked to be honest. We're half into the season and it feels we're not even finished with the prologue.

Which is why I REALLY like this episode, it feels like the meat of the show started with this one, where all the others have felt like setup.
Empathize with what? Her being an asshole?

Yeah, I can't really say I feel for a character because they're a terrible person. Season isn't over so maybe I will start liking her enough where I'd empathize with her or maybe I don't, who knows, you don't gotta empathize with all characters.

This show's openings have been really something. I'd love to watch a movie or show that looked like that. Also, Gillian Anderson is amazing. Whew.

Holy shit, this police station stuff is crazy.

Great episode.

I don't despise her character like others, but what are we suppose to empathize with about her? She had Shadow commit a crime, where he went to jail and she remained free. Then she preceded to fuck his close friend and lie to Shadows face about it. Then when Shadow was about to come home, she thought she should:

1.) Give the guy she was cheating on Shadow with a goodbye blowjob
2.) Act like nothing happened when Shadow came home (unless I missed the part she said she was planning on telling him)

Asshole dead wife 💯

I think they've managed to feature a dick almost every episode.

That's impressive

And Laura's a good character, from what we've been shown.

Empathize with what exactly? She didn't love Shadow (and despite what she says now I still don't think she loves him). It was her urging that he commited a crime for which he went to jail (some of this is on Shadow, to be fair). She cheated on him with his best friend. With HER best friend's husband. And doesn't even show any remorse for what she's done. Even she knows she's a shitty person.

She not a likeable character. Good character but not a likeable one.

I'm liking the show a lot better than the book now. All storylines in the show are riveting at this point, from Laura to Wednesday to the leprechaun to the new villains.

I'm confused about what type of god Mr. World is. What type of faith or obsession created him.

I think he's Wall Street, aka the god of the market, economy, power, greed etc. He wants world dominance.

Ehhhhhhh

Errrrr

I continue to be baffled as to just this show doesn't hook me. It has plenty of quality elements that I enjoy just fine, but it's like it's much less than the sum of its parts. There's just zero verve.

I think he's Wall Street, aka the god of the market, economy, power, greed etc. He wants world dominance.

Could be, but I think he came off as much more data-oriented with his Shadow stats and systems talk. Maybe he's some sort of library/Google information hybrid.

Decent episode. Pacing felt a bit odd to me.

Crispin Glover as Mr. World is SO good, though. Up there with McShane's Wednesday and Stormare's Czernobog as the best performances so far. Definitely didn't disappoint in that regard. The scene in general felt a bit too on the nose - like, "here's our big plan, get it, let's be super clear about what's happening!" - but considering some of the reactions here, maybe that was necessary. This episode (and the last one) feel like exposition dumps.

The focus on Laura was a drag, though. The logic that she doesn't really care about what happened in life because she's dead doesn't really work when we've seen her as a stone-cold bitch in life, too. I did get a laugh out of her playing dead in the tub with Mad Sweeney, though. Poor guy. From the next episode preview:
Looks like they'll be pairing up again? That should be fun.

Oh, right, and the opening! That stop-motion style CGI? Crazy beautiful. Such a cool idea. Hopefully they continue to experiment like that with mediums and such.

My only real question at this point is... what the fuck was with that chair/tree monster??
