The only times I like Spider-man is in Marvel vs. Capcom, but I have to admit this looks amazing.
It felt so open/free, Insomniac did an amazing job with the game.

This game looked phenomenal to me, I'm even giving the QTEs a pass as I'm not sure how else you navigate wrapping up a collapsing crane

That didn't do much for me tbh. Not really feeling the hype for this one, but I'm still interested in checking it out. Gonna wait for some less scripted gameplay videos.

I mean Platinum Games have tons of QTEs too for set pieces.

Don't bother

Besides the unbelievable visuals, the animations here are just outstanding, Insomniac really upped their game this gen.

The game looked great and the traversal was fantastic. I hope they scale back on the QTE's for sure but otherwise I was impressed.

so is it open world with random events that we can react to? this whole demo seemed heavily scripted, almost like a telltale game 😐.

Looks awesome. I wonder if this is gonna be in the first half of next year or if we will be waiting for the holidays. That's a long wait. Looks like it will be worth it though. Still my number one hyped game.

Insane For Sony
This was outstanding in every way I can think of. Probably the most fun looking, and overall impressive game at E3 so far.

That's the problem with E3 presentations. Everything needs to be spectacular set pieces, often to an extent it almost looks scripted. It's a trend that has increased particularly this generation (see: almost any AAA gameplay presentation)

I wouldn't worry this is all the game has to offer.

World class trolling.

I promise promise promise im not trolling. I'd buy this game regardless, it's just I would've loved to see some random exploration to get an idea how big the world is and how navigation is. I know this was a story mission but even then it felt heavily scripted. I loved the Arkham series so its not necessarily a negative its just within the confines of the demo it seemed overbearing.

Visually amazing but lacking in convincing gameplay. QTE use was about as bad as I expected. Button prompts during combat at the bottom right made no sense so either it was shifted for presentation or maybe this is more towards proof of concept than final gameplay and UI.

Best game of Sony's conference for me, which is kind of surprising given MH and SotC were there (which would normally be more up my alley but failed to excite me).

But yeah, definitely captures the feeling of Spider-Man, which is great. Best Marvel hero is back, baby.

Swinging looks off to me? Hard to tell how physical it was based on that. I miss the good standard that was Spider-Man 2.

It looked amazing. People will bitch about fucking everything.

It was a heavily tailored gameplay demo of a game that's still a good 6 months to a year away. It showed a little bit of everything: hints of the plot. combat that would be familiar to anyone that's played the Arkham games. Spidey web gadgets. QTE's. Environment prompts that look to make combat a little more varied. Swinging through the city (with what appeared to be button prompts for more precision/options while swinging around). Some first person mechanics. Interior sections/transitions, possibly hinting at interior levels/locations in some form.

The 8 minutes showed us a lot, but was still designed around giving us a taste of the variety present in the game. I thought it was a fantastic way to end the presentation.

Besides, a fucking Spider-Man game not from Activision, designed by a developer that absolutely specializes in making fun games. From Ratchet to Sunset Overdrive, Insomniac fucking know fun. Even their "weakest" games have been solid. I feel like I've been waiting decades for a quality Spider-Man game. I'm reserving judgment, but what we've been shown looks damn good.

After watching the demo again I think I can accept the QTEs, I don't like them in most other games but they do fit Spiderman completely, you can't do those big spidey's set pieces without involving QTEs here and there.

How it can even work otherwise? it's not like doing an Uncharted set piece, the scenes in Spiderman are too complex and Spidey got too many extraordinary abilities to give you total control on those so it's either giving up on Spidey's big set pieces (which is unacceptable, part of the franchise's DNA is big set pieces and spectacles, he is not Batman) or just adding QTEs in between for those epic moments.

I rather have those moments than having them removed.

I knew there would be complaints about QTE on GAF.

The public at large won't care though. This game, if reviewed and marketed well, will sell gangbusters, I'm thinking at least as much as Batman Arkham did, i.e. 5MM+. I'm still surprised Sony was able to coup this exclusive from Marvel. It IS a system seller, and it also might be IG's best game yet...

I think they will work in the same sense as Batman

It's not a randomised button like a QTE, the prompt will always exist on the same button. For that reason it doesn't need to be a big overlay

Thank you for the reply, thats all I was getting at, I apologize for the telltale reference.

Man this demo was really underwhelming to me. Spider-Man was the thing I was most excited for going in and the gameplay demo just left me cold. Those back to back to back QTE segments reslly killed it for me. Insomniac is usually very gameplay focused so this was a weird thing to see in one of their games.

It was evident to me the webs attached to buildings. Also jstevenson confirmed they attach and swinging is physics based in this thread.

It looks gorgeous, and the animations are stunning, but at the same time, it was also kind of boring m. Maybe they chose a bad section to demo

Telltales spider man lol
So the warehouse section was very batsman inspired
There were way too many qtes
But the animation was great
Movement reminded me of sunset overdrive
Really if this game can match sunset overdrive in terms of joy.... it'll be more than worth it

+Webslinging looks pretty good, its a little slower compared to Spiderman 2 but I'm fine with it.
+ We're actually getting a different villain and while I don't know much about Mr Negative he does seem like an interesting antagonist
-The QTEs are annoying as all hell
-The combat and stealth feels too much like the Arkham games, I was hoping for some combos that use different buttons but so far I'm not impressed.

So I'm very mixed about the game, I still have hope for the game but so far "meh"

I get you, but the Telltale comparison was a great exaggeration. Pretty much every E3 demo is heavily scripted but I'm sure there's going to be a lot of exploration and free roaming.

I know Gaf likes to look at games and gaming in multiple angles, but this is a bizarre thing to keep repeating at this stage.

You're the game designer....explain how you could so those set pieces without QTE? If you can tell me how, then I'll say your concern is warranted but I'm looking for a logical answer on HOW to do these pieces without them?

Agreed. Pretty much the only other option to keep these set pieces would be a simple cutscene but I think I still prefer QTEs.

I am with you, I was hoping to see open world free roam exploration powered by sweet web swinging.
