“The heliocentric model says that we’re spinning at 1,038 mph. They say you won’t notice it because it’s a continual motion. But you should be able to feel it. You shouldn’t be able to function allegedly spinning that fast.”

...you can feel it, at least over long distances.

Like, what else explains the way bullets track over long distances (coriolis effect), or the way the focault pendulum works? There are museums that you can go to that show this!

And that's ignoring the fact that we can mea sure the curvature of the Earth and it's rotation and neither are 0!!!

Who you working for bro?

I'm glad the solar eclipse is stressing out the flat earthers. Hard to explain that when the sun and moon are supposedly always across from each other. Back to the drawing board boys!

Just the fact that we can predict the eclipse is going to happen should be proof enough, these fucking clowns lol

They accept the predictions of "heliocentrists" because deep down they know it's true

Have flat earthers given an explanation of where the edge is? Is it between Alaska and Russia, or some other area? And have they explained why you can fly all over without seeing an edge?

Obviously I'm not stooping down to argue with them, I'm just curious what happens in their heads.

I'm not well versed in this inanity but last I saw they believed that flights and cruises avoid the edge by going in a circle or flying over the north pole or some shit

You don't actually have to engage in the "discussion" about if the earth is flat. The actual content of the story is how a human being becomes like this.

Flat Earthers would be so much better off if they tried to treat it like an actual academic discussion, but instead feel the need to throw around "propaganda" and how 99% of the world has been tricked and the 99% of that remainder is in on the tricking. To deny that there is legitimate evidence for the heliocentric model makes me want to burn down the education system immediately.

Let's assume this is true

Why would NASA not just lie about how fast the Earth spins? If they're making it up, why would they say something like this when they could come up with a lie that convinces idi-- free thinkers? Or do flat Earthers on one hand think that NASA is creating the greatest coverup of all time, and on the other hand are less intelligent than they are?

I'll give these guys a trillion dollars if they can prove there's an edge of the world for me to jump off. And proving as in getting me to look over the edge of the world and see space

This shit is so ridiculous. You only need to fly at a high enough altitude to see by yourself Earth's curvature.

What's their explanation for that? TVs camouflaged as plane windows?

These idiots could take a few non-stop flights in one direction and find themselves landing back at their origin to see that the earth isn't flat.

Just the fact that we can predict the eclipse is going to happen should be proof enough, these fucking clowns lol

Then it would be impossible to fly around Antarctica, but it's not.

They're so dumb.

Isn't the Flat Earth Society meant to be satirical? And we've gone full Poe's Law and become real.

I mean they boasted about how they had members all around the globe, that has to be deliberate.

The website is satire, many of their members admit to such. Though I'm sure some take it seriously. Still, there are those outside the site that are totally serious... I think.

As you said, Poe's law makes whether they're being satirical or not difficult to tell.

How are flat-earthers being persecuted? People not sharing your beliefs or even disagreeing with you when you express them is not persecution.

And/or reptilians. I wonder what the shift will be if/once orbital flights become doable for the average person (at least once in their lives). You have ex-astronauts who believe in ETs and UFO's and such, but I've yet to read of a single former spacefarer who believes the world is flat.

It's Antarctica. They believe there is a giant ice shelf encompassing the globe, uhhh, I mean disc.

So, the founder of the group discussed in the OP is my uncle. My dad mentioned to me a few months he was getting into this Flat Earth nonsense, but I had no idea he was *this* far gone.

He has a looooooong history of falling for scams and pushing woo. His whole family is also like this -- the last time I caught up with him he was partnering up with a doctor in South America trying to sell "suppressed Cancer cure" Amygdalin, which was banned in the US because it causes cyanide poisoning: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amygdalin

It pains me, given that I'm employed by a university to teach critical thinking.

These fucking imbeciles should be mocked at every opportunity. Not every opinion must be respected, particular not opinions contradicting scientific truths.

Jeez. I'll admit I'm a fan of weird theories, but taking it seriously like yr uncle is something even I, an admitted moron, wouldn't do.

Yeah, this is the easiest one to disprove simply by asking why.

Centuries of lies, millions of people in on it, spending billions to make it look true, and not one person ever coming forward with evidence from the other side...

Why? What the hell would justify the cost, loyalty, and effort?

I don't even begin to grasp the logic of why it's more likely a god created discs than globes. Other than discs don't make any sense.

fantastical cosmologies have really gone downhill in the past few centuries

is what happens when you got folks regulating drugs and stuff. Back in the day you could give the help a swig of this totes cool 99% alcohol laced with hemlock and whatever mushrooms you found growing at the back of some monk's feet and, if they somehow survived you told them to draw whatever the fuck they saw while tripping balls. Nowadays its all safe drugs and crap. Ain't no one gon trick no intern into injecting krokodil into his eyeballs to see wots wot.

So, since a round earth is apparently a giant lie to these people, what is the purpose of the lie?

If it's a global conspiracy to keep people thinking that the world isn't flat, why? What's the point?

If we knew, we'd be able to tear down the lies. Duh.
