Right, I didn't mean he set out to copy DB. He set out to create his own story that carried its spirit in his own way. DB is what inspired him, set the flame alight, so to speak. OP feels like a successor to it in many ways, it has that adventurous feelgood spirit to it. Although you're right, it is very much its own thing.

yeah...the entire war arc was just horrible...
But I agree, Naruto was mostly good, even had a boost in quality at the end there to finish out the series. It's just too much bloat towards the end though.
The anime imo rivals and surpasses OP at times the first 130 episodes or so. Everything before Shippuden is Soooooo good...

Nah it started thanks to a year long arc focusing on Sasuke and the whole big deal that team 7 & 8 were dworkign together did fuck and all.
I mean, probably, lord knows I don't recall every little thing these days. Just that, after Itachi died, Sasuke's character just got completely ruined far past where anyone thought it would be.
Uchiha plot cancer definitely started after Itachi's death, but then you had the Pain Invasion arc which was just bananas.
I'd argue it didn't really start to skid until the final battle began, though. Even parts of the war arc were good fun, though you saw the writing on the wall with that weird-as-fuck battle with Itachi and Sasuke vs Kabuto on the one hand, and Madara soloing the 5 kage on the other.

Naruto stopping being good after the Tsunade stuff, and only had occassional rises in quality. The Uchiha stuff was already in place by the first rescue Sasuke arc. The Sasuke derail began with the Grass country arc, and was in full effect when Sasuke attacked Orochimaru and went after Itachi. Team HAWK was the sequel, not the beginning.
All this talk of Fairy Tail, I think my disappointment with Fairy Tail is specifically because I read and bought all of Rave Master. Even though it was his first work Rave Master largely avoids many of the shonen tropes and stayed entertaining from beginning to end. So to see him go from a well executed shonen to the most generic shit in the genre is just sad man.
Following tropes isn't a problem you know. It is how you use them.

I know double post and all but Sandman wrote a summary of Shimabukuro manga about Oda.
- Shimabukuro (Toriko's author) considers he is level 5 mangaka and Oda is level 99 or more.
- Oda talked with Shimabukuro very politely when they first met. This was because Oda was worried that he would speak in his Kumamoto-dialect accidentally if he talked casually.
- Before his debut as a mangaka, Oda shouted in a party that he felt like playing Final Fantasy when his manga was rejected by edtors' meeting
- When Shimabukuro's manga chapter 1 ranked 1st in Jump, Oda sent him a message to celebrate via FAX. Shimabukuro still owns the message from Oda now.
- Both Oda and Shimabukuro regret that they should have used a pen-name instead of their real name.
- Shimabukuro says he receives manga energy from Oda every time they meet.
- Shimabukuro once asked Oda for his autograph and message to encourage Shimabukuro's little sister who was hospitalized in 2003.
Oda gladly drew it for him. Shimabukuro says he can't forget his sister's voice in joy when she received it.
- Oda doesn't have a chief assistant since he thinks having a chief assistant between Oda and normal assistants would complicate their relationships.
- Oda says he feels more clear headed with less than 2 hours' sleep...
- Shimabukuro says Oda has been full of confidence and has not lost any energy toward manga since they met for the first time.
- Shimabukuro's message to Oda in the last page:

The One Piece may be a bit disappointing due to the long ass wait, but I have full confidence that he'll end the series on a strong note.

Is it even possible for the One Piece to actually match expectations? It's hard to think that anyone even has a concrete idea of what it could be.

Sanji is more of a mix between your comedy lady crazy guy and a James Bond pastiche.
I still think it will be. Even if we set aside the question of whether there will be any pairings within the Straw Hats, Oda's not just going to leave us on "and the adventure continues" and not give a hint of how everyone ended up, which is going to include somebody's babies.
Chopper's gonna get some of that gazelle mink.
