CNN: Trump Jr. and Manafort reach deal with Senate panel to avoid public hearing

Washington (CNN)The leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee have cut a deal with President Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort to avoid a high-profile public hearing next week, with the two men agreeing to provide records to the panel and to be privately interviewed ahead of any public session.

Grassley and Feinstein said in their statement: "Glenn Simpson, through his attorney, has declined to voluntarily attend Wednesday's Judiciary Committee hearing regarding compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Therefore, a subpoena has been issued to compel his attendance. Simpson's attorney has asserted that his client will invoke his Fifth Amendment rights in response to the subpoena."

The action here won't be in the Senate, it'll be in the Mueller investigation, so what happens during the showy public hearings is kinda unimportant imho.

This. We're not going to get public spectacle, and any open hearing would be restricted in mentioning details anyway.

Eh but getting them to say anything on record no matter how trivial could have led to who knows what down the road. Since journos seem to be doing all sorts of work lately it would have been more info to comb through.

Boo-urns....

Well that's disappointing. But I guess there was no way Daddy Trump would let Little Trump get grilled in an open Senate hearing.

I read this as a good thing. Judiciary gets to use the leverage of an open hearing to force Manafort and Jr. to disclose more than they wanted too and they still withhold the right to force them to publicly testify at a future date.

Getting documents from them isn't nothing. At the end of the day, it's the documents that matter.

these things always end as dog and pony shows anyway. wrangling your way out of it looks more damaging, on the whole

Huh? What could Manafort and Donald Jr possibly know that can't be discussed in an open setting? There's no classified information or anything in play.

If they’re testifying privately, then the testimony might be a lot more sensitive or damaging. I don’t know how the Senate committee would easily accept it if it wasn’t worth their while.

My question is. Is it a nice quiet resignation possible, and ultimately that's what's desired? No convictions no pomp and circumstance. Just back door deals the American public is given a story and the public moves on

Good for Jr, he s missed making deals. Hopefully it's a streak of patriotism by exposing Dads treason.

i mean it would just be a bunch of *prepares southern accent* "i don't recall"

Which begs the question- which is more untrustworthy:

Southern: "Well ahhm afraid I just don't recall"
NYC: "I don'ts remember nuthin"
Cockney: "I don't know nuffink guv"
USSR: "Maybe in toilet they have meeting or in kindergarten da?"

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I want to be wrong) but I heard earlier on the NPR that none of these were going to be under oath. That includes Kushner's date, which I heard about on CNN yesterday.

They would have been under oath or there would be no reason for the deal since they could lie all they want and not get in any trouble. They shook.

No because pence is on record lying about a bunch of shit now. If trump resigns, the investigation moves to pence.

But I was really looking forward to two hours of Republicans asking questions about leakers and #ButHerEmails and Trump Jr responding to Dem questions with "I don't recall".
