Trump: Trans Soldiers now barred from the military entirely

I have no idea why, but I once heard that the army DO have a disproportionate representation of trans people.

Maybe it is like being in denial -> trying to be super manly to compensate -> army

Anecdotally, I've heard that's the case in the British Army. I have a medical officer in my family and she sees a lot of soldiers coming out as trans in later life who say they were struggling with it in their late teens/early 20s and so went for the most macho job they could think of.

Like I said, it's anecdotal - I don't know any hard numbers to demonstrate whether this is typical. But it does happen.

Speaking to a number of gay friends who joined the military when it was still illegal, for them it was exactly that. They were confused, upset and didn't know what to do - and thought that joining the military would 'straighten them out' in a hyper masculine environment.

Of course, that's not exactly how it worked out...

Frustration is fine, but it's the assumption that anyone who happens to fall under the category of "Republican" is evil or in full support of everything the president does, that's super iffy, at least for me.

Late to the party but since this was a response to my comment I'll write back.

If you voted for/support Trump, you either agree with his platform and are fine with what's happening now, you've somehow not paid attention to anything he's said and done until election, or you think he's not being serious and just bullshitting his way to the white house, and are quite happy to gamble away the rights of other people. Or you just think it'd be funny to piss off liberals because politics is just one big joke, right?

I don't think any of those scenarios paint you in a particularly great light. The frustration is perfectly justified.

If you support Trump, you're pretty evil.

If you don't support him, but are a Republican, you should probably accept that you are voluntarily associating yourself with an evil guy, and stop expecting people to treat you like a child because you don't like feeling bad about yourself. Quit being a Republican and people won't assume you're evil.

From CNN: The countries that allow transgender troops to serve in their armed forces
In June 2016, the Obama administration lifted a ban against transgender people serving openly in the armed forces. In 2011, Obama signed a repeal of the Clinton era "don't ask, don't tell" policy that blocked openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual individuals from joining the military but prohibited military personnel from harassing or targeting closeted LGBT members.

Without the US, 19 countries allow transgender people to serve. This includes Thailand, whose armed forces only allow transgender individuals to serve in administrative and office roles, not in combat.

After consultation with my Generals and military experts...
Wait wait. So which generals and military experts did he consult with? Don't tell me that they're anonymous. I did a quick search but didn't find anything reported so far but will try again.

Don't think that anybody knows.

Probably Jim, maybe Jim's uncle. I'm sure he has other Generals that he talks to (not with, he doesn't seem to umderstand that he isn't smart, but he is the CinC)

This is another abdication of leadership from the US, only months after letting other countries lead on climate change. The free world is moving further and further from looking towards the US as a leader.

The ones from his ass, just like the "a lot of people are saying" he likes to cite so often. He's almost never able to name any tangible sources. So full of shit.

For clarification, I was only thinking of voting for him, because along with not knowing much about his platform, I was under the assumption that the man had absolutely no chance in hell of winning. I didn't really like either person by the time it was weeded down to just two, but I thought for absolute sureness that the orange reptile looking (Seriously his eye brows look like that ridged thing that reptiles have above their eyes. :p) jackass would not be the one to end. I ultimately didn't vote, and in all honestly was probably never going to vote, that doesn't mean however that I support Trumps decisions. I find it absolutely impossible however that there aren't people who did actually vote for Trump that didn't believe in all the racist and terrible shit he's done. Thus like I said I think the frustration is fine, but treating anyone who happens to be a republican like they need to be attacked just doesn't seem like it'll be helpful to anything at all. However, that's not the topic in the thread, so I do apologize for helping spiral it into this topic further then it already was.

IN regards to the actual topic, I don't know enough about being in the military and what it pays for or being fully transitioned and having medical costs (I know more about the latter then the former, but every time I try to research the latter I tend to find "nightmare" stories that scare me away and make me feel worse about myself.)

These ones. He was playing Army Men before bedtime yesterday.

Seriously though, I doubt there were any, except the ones in his head.

So after a little more searching before, the answer is.. reporters aren't really sure:
On Trump's military transgender ban, no one seems to know anything
Washington Examiner said:
Trump said he was relying on his generals and military experts, but no one could say who specifically that was. The spokesman for the chairman of the Joint Chiefs was not returning calls, or seeing reporters as he worked behind a closed office door. No member of the Joint Chiefs came forward to make any statement. The Pentagon was awash in confusion all day. Officials said they were awaiting guidance from the commander in chief. A statement issued mid-morning said, ”We will continue to work closely with the White House to address the new guidance provided by the Commander-in-Chief on transgender individuals serving the military," and told reporter to call the White House.
Also, if you read more of that summary article, you get a bigger picture on what actions others are already starting to take. That's a good thing.

And then there's that first reply...

Yeah that dude is just a douche. He goes on and says that he doesn't hate anyone but uses the word tranny and says that the armed forces shouldn't promote equality. So you can tell side has some cognitive dissonance going on

"I'm not a racist, bigoted piece of shit, I just vote for them." is not a valid excuse.

We essentially said the same thing, the difference being that I don't think ignorance is an excuse, nor is assuming that all the bad shit he said he was going to do won't actually happen if he gets in. Everyone who didn't do their part to prevent this is at fault. As I said, the frustration is justified.

Probably been mentioned but:
US military spends 84 million in Viagra for personnel
US military spends 2.3 million on transgendered insurance

Probably already mentioned, but not strictly true. Only a small fraction of that went to active personnel. From the BBC News article on this: "The vast majority went to other groups eligible, including millions of military retirees and their family members."

Netherlands always ahead of everyone huh? So smug! ;)

GJ Netherlands, Canada and Scandinavia, as always.

Don't see how that makes any difference though.

I'm not surprised he did this. But to do something that impacts so many people who are in the military or who plan to be, It's a complete slap in the face in how he did it.

To do it over a fucking tweet??!!!

Shows how much he values american/human life.

Reuters: Exclusive: Top U.S. general says no changes yet to transgender policy
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a written message on Thursday to military leaders that there has been no change yet to the military's policy on transgender personnel, despite plans for a ban announced by President Donald Trump.

"There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President's direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance," Dunford said in the written message to service chiefs, commanders and senior enlisted leaders, seen by Reuters.

"In the meantime, we will continue to treat all of our personnel with respect. As importantly, given the current fight and the challenges we face, we will all remain focused on accomplishing our assigned missions."

This is a pretty effective misdirection to get people to lose focus while their healthcare is being taken away.

Banning Americans from serving in the military based on gender would ultimately prove to be unconstitutional, but it would make a lot of noise in the meantime. The military doesn't know what Trump is talking about, and there is nothing even resembling an implementation plan. Maybe Trump pushes this forward, maybe not. Right now, there are more pressing fires that need attention too, which Trump is hoping you'll forget about.

The media falls for this every single time. Trump probably can't believe this trick still works, after he keeps pulling it out time and time again.

Whining about GAF as if it were a hibe mind is a good way to get banned. Quelle surprise.

We are capable of paying attention to multiple things at a time and Trumpcare is almost as dead as John McCain.

KiA's MO is to remove context to misrepresent the forum to make it look bad. Not worth listening to. more than surface level research shows that both posters werent banned for being republican but were banned for their attitudes and the way they presented themselves in discourse.
