ARMS data-mined: 20 fighter codenames found! Also, Nintendo says an update is soon.

Honestly, Balrog or Dudley would be awesome guest characters.

How about

Well dang. Can I still get them if I boot up Splatoon 1, or was it time-limited?

You can, you just need to keep going into the shops and hope you find them. Alternatively buy them off someone in the plaza. Her shoes are popular because of the damage up, so you might be able to nab that from a player. The other two pieces are not as likely.

I don't anticipate Little Mac being added, tbh. Maybe a character inspired by him, like an ARMS-universe take on him. But not the OG Little Mac himself. His arms don't stretch.

Was that only in Japan? It's cute but I don't recall acquiring those.

It came west too.

Honestly, if "Surprise" turns out to be a guest character, I feel like this lovable chap would make the most sense (at least IMO):

latest

All memes aside, he actually fits the design of ARMS like a glove considering his whole shtick is his stretchy arms, lol. I always thought it'd be kinda weird to see Little Mac with extendable limbs.

As much as I would love that, I feel like Nintendo doesn't even remember he exists.

If I wore them and had a match with you I'd show up in your lobby and you'd be able to order em that way, I think they periodically show up in the shops too but that's more nebulous.

Also, while it would be rad if "Surprise" was a guest character, my bet is it's a character based on those party blower things.

Do these things have a name that isn't party blowers? It feels like they should but I can't think of it.

I mean, the hairstyle is also spelled tail so I don't see how that matters. Most likely just poor english on the part of Japanese programmers
Oh man, what if Twintale is an actual animal that runs around on all four legs while fighting with its two tails? ARMS' first quadrupedal fighter.

I'm guessing a few of these are placeholders for existing fighters. It's not like Nintendo ever intended for this list to get out.

I'm wondering if some of these strings were doubled or aren't intended to represent unique characters. Ninjara is obviously Ninja, but could also be Chain, Twintale is too similar to be mere coincidence, and Robo is also Byte and Barq.

Seems like a situation where plans changed down the line for some of these.

Yeah this a definite possibility.

Yeah it got a Squid Girl costume set:

Those were so good. I really loved the male version of Squid Girl's costume. It looked great.

There was also a manga crossover by the Squid Girl author:

While I did speculate, I get the feeling a few of them (including that one, chain, and robo) are just redundant leftover code tbh,

Yeah, this is what I was thinking, too.

As you may have heard, ARMS is doing very well, having sold 1.1 million copies in just two weeks. For perspective, Street Fighter V only reached 1.7 million after 17 months, and that's with access to an install base of 60 million users

jesus christ! ahahaha

Is there a reason why they'd change the codenames mid-development instead of just using the (other, equally short) codenames they already had in place?

I can see the possibility with Chain, Robo and Twintale. The other six seem unrelated to anyone else, though.

If there's a Nintendo guest character, I want Octavio

The octobot fist makes a lot of sense as a weapon, it would just have to be attached to an unrelated fighter. There's no Blind fist currently so it'd fit right in.

Nade already broke the mold for fists all using the same model, so just copy it from the Octobot and downsize it.

Without any insight into their development process and with virtually no info on their tools, we can't say either way for certain. This could be a list of planned characters, or it could be a bunch of completely unrelated strings.

It's nigh impossible to tell what's legitimate after they scrub the patch data and what's leftover garbage.

If this turns out true. That's a good amount of free content.
Now if they can just add a more worthwhile arcade mode experience it's all set.

Might actually be 17 total, since as others have noted, a few of the codenames could be redundancies.

17 seems like an odd number to end on.

I'm going to guess 18-20.

Besides, Chain, Robo, and Twintale aren't necessarily redundant.

Chain could be Ninjara's Sensei. Robo could be anything robotic. Twintale could possibly be a "bizarro" Twintelle made by ARMS Labs' experiments on her hair?

I don't disagree with any of this. :) I can't think of any good reasons why they'd change the codenames, and I also don't see any potential duplicates beyond the three you and Berordn mentioned. The likelihood of codename switching is a good argument for why there might be no duplicates on that list.

Man, you're full of good ideas! Especially that Twintale theory.

For those who haven't been following, the ongoing ARMS journal mentioned a plot by the mad scientist at the ARMS Labs to steal a sample of Twintelle's hair.

Perhaps they created something based on the hair sample... Perhaps it resulted in "Twintale?"

I'd have to wonder why "Twintale" would be the only one with an ID that's something other than their concept (being called "clone" or somesuch).

But nothing's impossible at this point, I'm just a little skeptical that all of these are going to see the light of day or that some haven't already been scrapped. Twenty characters would be great, but so would playable Octolings in Splatoon and we're still waiting on that.
