No Man's Sky 1.3 Update releasing this week (portals, expanded story, and more)

So is it time to jump in yet?

I'm one of those people who watched closely during launch and saw the backlash and decided to wait. I have no burning desire to play necessarily, but I do plan to play it at some point.

Will this update be the right spot to jump in.

If the core mechanics are in a good spot, I'd be happy to sink time into it. I have 20ish hours into Astroneer and that's pretty much only mechanics, and I think it's amazing.

There's still much not known about the new update just wait a bit more to see if it's something you would want to play.

I loved the concept of this game since the very beginning. I'm a sucker for sci-fi and Star Trek so I was planning on exploring and keeping a Captain's Log, and I would play the game in "roleplay mode", creating my own story and backstory as I go.

Then the game launched and I didn't even buy it. All the negativity just put me away to a degree that I didn't even wanna know about the updates or anything Hello Games had to say about the game.

I am now beyond that and would like to try and follow my initial plan of playing the game and keeping a log of my discoveries.

Given what I want from the game, can anyone recommend it to me? It's 24$ on PSN so I'm thinking of buying it.

The game would work in a roleplay mode if you imagined waking in a strange galaxy with a busted ship nearby.

It would work better if there were no living NPC races in game, but only AI avatars of them, carrying out research and piloting their ships on millenia old trade routes, living out the commands left in their system before all of their creators left the galaxy. But there are living NPC characters and I find their limited range of interaction jarring. They build these stations and ships and outposts, but there are no cities, no more than a few in one place, and their interaction with you is minimal. It does not make sense.

The NPCs also show the limits of procedural generation. The tiny towns in 16 bit RPGs seem more vibrant than the NPCs in NMS. Contrasting that with the scope of each races' "empire" requires an even greater leap in inagination than supposing the tiny farmhouse in a town in Breath of Fire 2 could feed everybody in that town.

This game was my dream game. The scope of it is impressive, but I greatly prefer the limited but lively maps of Freelancer, Escape Velocity, and Rebel Galaxy.

For the price, it seems like as good a time as any. I originally played a bit at launch but I ended up returning my copy. However with the recent updates, and the amount of changes they seem to be making, I ended up buying it digitally today. Though I likely won't start playing properly till the new update is released.

The core mechanics are roughly the same, but they have improved just about everything else to varying degrees. From a standpoint of roleplaying your exploration, its definitely at a good spot. I still would not suggest this game at full price, or possibly even at half (though its nearly there). For $25 or less? Yeah, its worth pulling the trigger based on the criteria you guys are saying here.

Hey so they're finally adding in the portals from the prerelease trailers?

Hopefully there's more to it than just portals.

Bear in mind, the announcements of the other patches only hit the absolutely biggest points of the patches, while the entire list far exceed what they stated. If anything, I'm a little excited to see what the full list is as portals are not all that exciting to me.

Its possible its only story and portals, but given their experience with launch, how they did their preceding patches, and the ARG with run up to anniversary date, I'd be downright stunned if that's all there was. Then again, stranger things with this game have happened.

Played at launch up to the end of what then was the atlas path and stopped. Well before any updates. At this point I just feel stuck in a waiting loop as the longer I wait the (hopefully) better it will be and I never get around to it.

Its amazing that this sort of thing is really needed for some people.

I suppose when the words 'No Mans Sky' is heard its hard to be rational for some people.

Cant blame them for playing it down after the backlash they recevived at launch. Now we have the same cunts that wanted Sean dead around release date moaning because he doesnt give more info.

Love this game, looking forward to the patch.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback guys!

I think I'll hang on and keep a watchful eye when this update drops and see how people are liking it!

improved story and portals alone could touch on changes to dozens of different systems in the game, depending on how involved they got with either. More variety in NPC behavior, more variety in enemy AI behavior, new types of structures, etc. Just portals alone, depending on how they are implemented, could dramatically change how the game is played.

It's still not far enough removed from the gross nerd backlash for me. Maybe I'll try again next year sometime.

Even with all the updates its no where near what they promised. Glad I didnt soend my miney on it, feel bad for those who bought based on the promises. Wonder how how many copies it did sell.

I've played 50 hours on the launch week and that seems like a really good ideia to do when I finally come back to this update. I think that I'll keep a captain's log using Steam Screenshots and use some alternative stardate so numbers won't be negative. That should prove interesting. Something like:

Captain's log, stardate 1708.09.

As I was approaching Earth's solar system, a space anomaly dragged my ship into an unknown galaxy through a vortex, damaging it in the process. Now I must explore this galaxy and try to find my way home. The black hole in the center of the galaxy could be a start point, but first I need to repair my ship and survive. This should also prove a good opportunity to seek out new life and new technology.

Will wait for impressions before redownloading, but this is certainly the first thing to have me considering a download since launch.

I never bought this do to the lackluster launch but I'm really impressed that they keep supporting it with more content. I may have to pick it up on steam during a sale.

"Free"

They promised a lot of features that were not there on release; and people paid 60 euros for the game. It's definitely not free. That said, kudos to the team for improving the game and making it what it was supposed to be in the first place.

Curious what promises you think they made and broke? Especially features that changes he gameplay in any major way

- planetary rotation
- multiplayer (never promised , in fact they said 99.9 percent would never see another player)
- giant sand worms ( a legit missing thing but I'm not sure how it would improve the gameplay in anyway)

I'm curious what else is missing , everything else seems to have been patched in pretty well from what I can tell.

Atleast it's no season pass or dlc.
Or doing simply nothing and leaving the game be.

Just ignore the loser comments.

I might actually start a new game when the update releases.

If you have an older save file that may not be necessary as you could probably use some of the stuff you have there.

What you can do instead (if you want to start "clean") is to start a Survival playthrough. It starts a new game that is admittedly more challenging (and feels more "rewarding") but it is also a separate save file from the regular game.

There is also Permadeath mode which is basically... Well, it's really difficult so I wouldn't recommend it until you are really good at the base game.

Nothing against No Man's Sky at all, but when did developers, that includes all developers, start stressing the fact that an update is free? It's a game update. It's supposed to be free right? I wonder who started the trend of saying that?

Probably clarification, considering it adds a bunch of new features and content. Under EA and WB that would probably count as "DLC" and come with a price tag...

Content updates sometimes come in the form of paid DLC. No harm no foul when they're highlighting the fact that this content update is free, in my opinion.

Precisely. A lot of non players of the game have staggeringly little clue how much stuff is introduced per update.

They are random now, at least after Pathfinder.

Guess the luck of the draw wasn't in my favour then. I remember giving it another go, found a ship that had fewer slots than what I had, and didn't bother doing it again.

Finding a crashed ship should trigger your sense of discovery and I think that's really missing. They should vary not just in the number of slots but in design and already-equipped upgrades, so even if you do find a ship that has no real capacity improvements there are other aspects of it that would make you want to switch anyways.

There are random upgrades in the ships mind.

They promised what we got - Noctis V - while people expected a cartoon Star Citizen.

I would love if they did crashed freighters as well. Just for the salvaging aspect , would improve your sense of exploration seeing a giant crashed ship on the horizon .

It's something they briefly showed in videos before release but never eventuates .

Add in big tree mods erc from the pc version and it could make worlds feel much more amazing .

I really would like to check out the game after the update, especially with discounted price. Question: PC (1440p/GtX1080) or PS4 pro HDR?

Basically is HDR worth it over 60FPS, mouse/KB and I assume better textures/graphic options?

Started this up for the first time since launch and the visuals do seem greatly improved though I played it on a regular PS4 at launch and now a PS4 Pro. The framerate feels like a huge improvement. Although its odd that the lock framerate option feels like it locks it to 25fps or something.

I only played for 30 minutes or so because I decided to wait until this patch before starting fresh.

Looking forward to jumping back in this weekend.

The mods are substantial as well. Go PC.

Usually what happens is a detailed trailer showing off features, followed not long after by even more detailed patch notes and then the actual patch release within a day or two.

Really quick process all in all from info to release.

So today is the anniversary of the games release yeah? We expecting this update to drop today?

I really enjoyed the base game and must've put around 70 hours or so in to it. Then when the 2 big updates dropped I must've put in another good 70-100 hours in so I'm really really looking forward to this update.

If it didn't say it was free it would inevitably lead to questions of whether it was free or not, how much does it cost etc. People get upset enough at the game being updated at all, never mind leaving it ambiguous as to cost of updates.

Just a little tip about the M+KB controls, they're fine on foot but not very good for flying or using the galacitc map. I'm still playing with M+KB but anything regarding ship flight and combat feels pretty bad. Another thing is that you can't look around inside your cockpit with M+KB, but you totally can with a controller. It's not really a big issue, you can only look around a little bit with the controller, but the fact that this has been the case since launch is baffling, alongside a decent number of smaller but persistent bugs that exist to this day.

The game is very stable 60fps on 1080p Pro.

How does the PC version run? I remember at launch people said the port didn't run so well even on beefy machines. Has that been improved?
