Is 2017 the best year for games since 1998?

Maybe a little too early to tell, but it's been really good so far:

-Breath of the Wild
-Horizon
-Yakuza 0
-Nier Automata
-Persona 5
-Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
-Stormblood
-Sonic Mania
-Splatoon 2
-New 3D Mario
-Crash Bandicoot Revival
-Tekken 7
-Resident Evil VII

It's got something for everyone. I haven't had this much fun playing games since 1998. This year has been awesome.

Nope, unless you ignored the handheld market through 2005-2010, where you'd get heaps of quality releases every year.

I agree that there's something for everyone, though.

Not necessarily, but the first part of 2017 is definitely the best release period for games ever imho- just not sure about the entire year.

It's a pretty fantastic year

Every game has been fantastic and a surprise and I haven't even played most of the hits

Persona 5, Yakuza, For Honor, tekken 7.

It's amazing that the only game that can even be considered a disappointment is mass effect andromeda ( haven't played it ) which is sad to think

Sure forget Metroid Samus Returns:p
:(

But yeah my favorite gaming year ever. (born in 1995) 2018 looks like a contender too with stuff like GOW 4, KH3, MHW, Kirby Switch and other Switch games yet unannounced and Red Dead Redemption 2 and ofcourse alot more (Bloodstained too!)

Add to the pile: Resident Evill VII, Nioh, Horizon Zero Dawn, Prey, Hellblade, What Remains of Edith Finch, Uncharted Lost Legacy.

Well, StarCraft was released in 1998 and got remastered this year so you may be on to something.

:-O

This year has been lovely with much I haven't played yet. It'll be a lot easier to put everything in perspective once 2018 begins, though, since we still have the fall and holidays left.

Yes. I've been saying this to my buddy for a few months now. There is so much quality stuff being released on all platforms at varying price points. This is the craziest year for games in our lifetimes.

Zelda, Mario, Splatoon 2, Metroid, Yakuza 0, Persona 5, Nier sequel, survival horror Resident Evil's glorious comeback, 2D Sonic Revival, Crash trilogy remakes, all the same goddamn year. I even got a Digimon World sequel myself!

It's definitely the best year in recent memory to me. Absolutely unreal.

Counting the Switch too, it's at the very least the best Nintendo year ever.

Edit: The one console with a consistently weak library not getting many meaningful releases doesn't make a difference lol.

I mean honestly... Not really. This has been a pretty good year to be sure with the launch of the Switch and Zelda with Mario on the way but at the same time Microsoft has completely failed to bring anything new to the table this year and thats WITH an upgraded Xbox One coming out as well. A truly great year has all platforms doing extremely well or at least having notable titles Microsoft certainly lacks that.

Also many titles that were originally coming out this year like Ni No Kuni 2 have been delayed to next year, not to mention on the Microsoft wagon we just had Crackdown 3 delayed as well.

The start of this year was really impressive and seemed to be signaling that this year would be truly impressive but delays hurt the second half of this year hard but even then I take exception to a few of the games you mentioned on your original list. Mario Kart 8 is a great port and I'm glad its here but it doesn't make this year any better, it helps Switch sure but I don't think you can argue if it had been Mario Kart 9 instead that wouldn't have just been better all around.

Then you have games like Persona 5 which have sold really well but have had extremely mixed reactions from fans. Myself included, I ended up extremely disappointed in the game and its writing.

So yeah a good year to be sure but the second half certainly isn't nearly as good as the first outside of a few specific titles, and this is also the year that brought some rather terrible sequels to once great series like Mass Effect as well.

With the release of Crash, it's almost just like 1998 too.

We also had Prey, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Horizon Zero Dawn, Resident Evil VII, Gravity Rush 2, Nioh... this year is truly on fire.

I can't recall ever feeling as overwhelmed by the sheer volume of quality titles releasing as I do this year. It feels like several legitimately good to great games come out every single week.

Don't think all systems need to have a good year for it to be a good year for gaming. Like, Saturn probably didn't compare too well in 1998.

It has been an amazing year for games, no doubt about it, but I think 2004 was better. We haven't had anything that touches the greatness of GTA: San Andreas/Half-Life 2/MGS 3/Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door/Pro Evo 4 imo. That's an exceptional combo of games that I don't think 2017 comes close to, as good as it is.

Don't know man but it's been a great year. I really really enjoyed Resident Evil VII and Zelda. I have Horizon but really havent gotten around to playing it.

Destiny 2 is coming and I'm guessing that game alone is going to make the year for me. And of course Mario even though it honestly didn't look that great to me, I'm still excited for it.

I would add Horizon and Crash and like Mario and Destiny 2 to the "great experiences of 2017" list. It's been a great year for sure.

It's a strong year, no doubt, but I feel like this has been a year about a lot of very good games but only a few truly excellent ones. Obviously that can still change since it's only August, but I played more games I consider "great" by this point last year and maybe even the year before that as well. There are a few games in particular that come oh-so-close to greatness but don't quite stick the landing, like RE7 and Prey.

The sheer volume of good games out already and still to come this year is pretty staggering nonetheless. It's likely that I'll buy more new games in 2017 than in any year previously. So in that sense it's a great year, but I tend to reflect back on how great a year is based on the number of really awesome games. And for me the jury is still out on that point.

I have zero interest in all of those games except Sonic Mania and Tekken 7 so I'm going to have to say no. I think this generation has paled in comparison to the previous one.

It's the best year for nintendo in a long time.

PC is pretty great as well, but switch has been eating my time so it's hard to comment.

Nidhogg 2 dragged me back to PC. Shits rad

Personally think it is, never thought I'd ever see another year as strong as the late 90s and early 00s. First half at least was particularly insane, I think it'll be well into 2018 before I catch up on all the games I want to play from it.

It's the best year in a decade easily for me. Not sure about since '98 though. Some great years during that stretch until 2005 or so.

I loved 2014 and 2015 a lot more. Although that could change with the release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 next month.

Standout titles in 2017 are Prey, Paradigm and West of Loathing so far.
