Amy Schumer insisted Netflix pay her the same as Chris Rock or Dave Chappelle

She is not funny. At all. However, it's all about the draw. Netflix would know what she's drawing compared to the other two and determine if what she is asking for is worth it and fair.

Chappelle and Rock deserve whatever they are getting. They've been top of the line, funny comedians for well over a decade.

I think it's... interesting that she leveraged the fact that black men made more than her to get her pay bump. No white comedians mentioned, just these 2 black guys.

She's not even funny to begin with. Maybe write some material that's not been stolen from other comics before you demand more money!

LOL. She didn't say nothing when Louis CK and Bill Burr were getting paid. Her ancestors were probably pissed when Frederick Douglass got the right to vote.

Uh, i'm petty sure Chris Delia or whoever the fuck aren't getting 20 million dollar checks she could negotiate against dude

If she has the numbers (views/audience) to back her claim then by all means ask for higher pay.

Tried to watch her special, but couldn't last more than 10 mins. In terms of quality she's not touching those two. Not by a long shot.

Didn't go through the thread but how do they quantify how popular a comedian is in order to come up with a value? Is it how many shows and movies they do? Or sorta like move stars where they have to get paid shit initially then their pay increases as they get popular?

Good for her if she could get more money. I think $11 million is way more than she's worth but I guess she has her fans. I'm just not one of them. And she's crazy if she thinks she's on the same level as Chris or Dave. She's not even on the level of Dave Attell in comedy.

She's nowhere near their level IMO but if Netflix gave in, she must draw similar viewer numbers. No skin off my back.

Comedic talent aside, if she can pull the numbers like the men she 100% deserves to get paid the same.

It's always been about how much of an audience you can pull, always.

Personally I think she's one of the worst female comedians around, but can't argue with the numbers she pulls in.

Chapelle is a bad comparison mostly because the way Netflix got those specials is a little unusual (Chapelle recorded them himself and then saved them to sell at the right time, Netflxi didn't fund the recordings), but yeah the Chris Rock thing is apt. The issue with saying Netflix shouldn't pay her as much because she's not as funny is that it is an excuse that is used all the time against women; "They're not as funny/they don't do as much work/they're not as smart."

Keep in mind, humor is subjective, and I remember a thread mentioning Maria Bamford saying she wasn't that funny, and that is objectively false, Maria Bamford is one of the funniest comedians alive and if this was a thread about Maria Bamford trying to fight for better pay, people would be saying a lot of the same comments.

I think it's probably all on Netflix.

If she brings in the views like Chapelle and Rock do, she absolutely deserves the same kind of money regardless of whether people find her funny or not. Clearly a lot of people do.

Heard of her name, never saw her comedy. But C'mon now, it's fucking Dave Chappelle. Shit I'm surprised Chris Rock got the same pay, I thought Chapelle would have gotten a much bigger check than Chris Rock.

You know how much hype was around the return of Dave Chappelle? That shit was a big fucking deal. People have been fiending for fresh content from Chapelle since like 06, you can't say the same for even Chris Rock (who had a whole fucking sitcom).

Nah its fair. He still has one more special he's recording for Netflix for 20 million.

Really good post.

It's about time white comedians were paid as much as black comedians.

hahaha

Chapelle was pretty bad.

Evilore seemed to like the show:

but even though his Austin one wasn't *as* good as peak Chapelle, it was still better than most

this is also a really good point

I personally do not find her funny at all however if Amy brings Netflix a similar amount of revenue or traffic as the two, then yes she should be compensated at a similar level. If she surpasses them, then pay her more.

Just don't hire her. I didn't know Schumer until I read of her here and decided to watch something. She's just not funny. I'm sure there are plenty other female comedians much much better than her if they want diversity. Just hire someone else, better than Schumer, and pay her those 20M.

Not a fan, but as long as Netflix is pissing away money like crazy good for her for getting whatever she can.

They've spent more money on worse stuff than this and will continue to do so.

Who are you talking to? Do you understand what happened here?

She has every right to demand whatever she wants, just like Netflix has the right to politely pass on any future specials from her based on the audience reception of the one she did.

It was good PR for them to get her at the time they did but I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see any more from her on Netflix, especially if you can book a dozen other upcoming comics for new specials for the price you'd pay her for one. Especially now that there are a TON of comics wanting to make a deal with Netflix.

The $50-100m they spent getting some of the top comics to record specials on them was fantastic publicity and buzz to move "premium comics" from HBO to Netflix.

I don't watch her specials or anything but saying that someone has no talent when drawing in $11m cold specifically for their talent seems silly.

Anyway didn't realize Netflix was throwing around that much cash at comedians. Seems like a good gig.

I read the title and thought the idea of Amy Schumer expecting to be paid the same as Chapelle and Rock to be laughable. As in made me laugh out loud for a good 20s. Bravo to her I guess. That said I thought to myself does she command that much of a most likely female audience? I sure as fuck don't know. If she has that large DVD sales and commands huge sales for comedy shows and brings a large audience from films and thus can bring subscribers to Netflix, then yeah I don't blame her for demanding her worth regardless of how unfunny I may find her. Do I think she has comparable DVD sales or comedy shows? I highly doubt it. What about film box office. She probably wins.

Yep. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. She named her price and Netflix matched. Hopefully this story motivates women for their next salary negotiations.

Not related to your post, I'm pretty tired of people using sexism as the reason why most people don't like Amy Schumer.
