Just got 100% at 11:19. Had a go at the trials and noped outta there. My time with this game has come to an end for now. Absolutely loved it.

The trials are very doable - you can feel yourself getting better at them after a few attempts.

Apart from the Trial of Escape. That felt like a bit of a shit-cake that comes down to run-and-pray in a game where everything else feels carefully designed and put together.

I finished the game at 10 hours and only 36% completion (surprised at how low this was). I thought the game was awesome in every way and it will end up somewhere very high in my GOTY list (i don't think anything will surpass Snake Pass though).

The only problem i have with games like this, is that while i always intend going back to collect everything, i always end up loosing motivation once the mainline story is finished. Also, at this point i have so many upgrades and health that it lacks any sort of challenge to keep playing. So i will most probably leave it at that.

Anyhow, excellent work from the developers and a great game. Now onto Hob.

The game could have been more challenging and had more bosses in general.

Hows this play on the Switch thinking of picking this up rather than playing some of the longer games I've got in my backlog (Mostly RPGs I need to get through).

It plays flawless on the Switch. 1080p/60 in docked, 720p/60 in handheld. HD Rumble support.

I don't agree that much about the bosses because the combat mechanics are all very simple. I see why they decided against adding bosses considering there isn't that much you can do with the mostly melee weapons you get.

As for the challenge, I think I agree. I enabled the double damage and exploding characters mods to make it harder though, and I think the difficulty that way was just right.

The problem with the "difficulty" blueprints is that they are pretty well hidden, so you might need to play the game one time first, to know where they are. Perhaps that's Image & Form's solution to a New Game+ mode?

Yeah, though I did find the double damage mod very early on (isn't it right next to the very first challenge cave?). I do plan to do a "New Game+" with all mods enabled in the future though. I wish they facilitated that by having an actual New Game+ mode in which you kept your blueprints and maybe your cogs, while removing all your actual base upgrades, artifacts and forge-obtained equipment.

This is a bit good, isn't it.

Mid game spoiler
Entered the
Vectron area. Lots of callbacks to the first game, they did really well in making it a frightening place with all the atmospheric effects and music, those golems scared the shit out of me! :D I like the way the 'ghosts' can be lured to tv screens to gain pickups too.
Great stuff.

Review'll be up soon so i'll say this in the meantime: This is a worthy follow-up to the original that occasionally reaches heights SteamWorld Dig 1...but the lows it digs are far deeper than its predecessor, pun not intended. Whatever else can be said about the original, the experience was more consistent and the exploration was more organic in terms of . Exploration is more impeded due to the limited inventory; it fills up so quickly in 2 that you'll have to return to the town well before you reach your next warp point. Even with all the cogs and expansions at your disposal, you'll often find yourself running out of space right up to the ending, usually without a warp point in sight (which is not to say they're sparse, moreso that your inventory fills up very quickly). Coupled with the greater focus on story and I found the constant backtracking and quips came at the cost of the isolation and atmosphere of the original. That said, it has its highlights: The challenge caves are a great distraction from the usual monotomy of digging and are worth the price of admission alone. It's a good game that borders on great, but I prefer the original between the two, warts and all.

This is not correct. If you have played a part of the game, it's no problems to unlock the "Portal of Pardon" ability, which allow you to warp almost anywhere.

EDIT: Also, what's the issue with an inventory bag that fills up? You can continue to dig anyway, since the mining material stays in the mine.

That ability is unlocked far later than it should have been and doesn't mitigate the problem the limited inventory causes in the opening hours. That aside, leaving behind materials only means that returning to where you last left off will see your inventory fill up even more quickly given how abundant materials are in comparison to the first one.

I never once felt limited by the inventory. I very consistently upgraded it, or was close to a pipe. I never felt the need to turn on the Portal of Pardon.

Initially I did not like that you lost gems when you died, and that it wasn't like the first where you dropped a bag. But then I realized how annoying it was to go back and get that bag.

Are you guys using the default controls? It feel weird to run/jumb in X/A (playing on PC with an XB1 controller) but then having to hit B to mine.

Also... I assume everybody is using D-Pad?

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
So I am already getting Stardew for Switch so it's a toss between Steamword Dig 2 and Golf Story. Digging or golfing?

I think this is very YMMV since many people think the inventory limit and upgrades game loop felt very encouraging ("one more trip...") instead of impeding. It helps that returning to the surface and back again is -very- snappy with little loading time and button shortcuts.

I haven't played too far into Golf Story myself, but it didn't immediately grab me like this game did. This game is pretty much a highlight all the way through. It's also extremely polished in a way that Golf Story isn't.

Holy shit @ Vectron
My heart hasn’t pumped like that since The Tank chased me on L4D

Also, when you think you’re near completing the game and it opens up... damn.

I’m absolutely loving this title. I remember having fun with Dig 1 in 2012, but this is on another level.

Having played the whole game, it feels like Portal of Pardon unlocked very early.

And if resources are abundant in the game, why the need to focus on resource gathering at all? I just collected the resources that I crossed my path. The early game resource aren't worth that much anyway, and when I saw the possibility of the Hobo-upgrade, I decided to not scan the opening caves for resources until I got that upgrade.

Also... I assume everybody is using D-Pad?

I used the left stick on Switch (joycon/Switch pro controller depending on portable/docked). I never felt the need to use the D-pad in the main game (haven't done the final challenges yet, though).

I'm near the end of my second play through, which I rather hilariously screwed up. I was doing the sequence break achievement and totally forgot about one of the
doomsday devices - I smashed three of them
then went to Vectron, then realized my mistake. Oh well. I don't think I have a third go in me.

Still, I want to hit 100% secrets, so I'm whittling away at that. I landed at 100% in the west and eastern deserts tonight, and ~95% everywhere else. 40/42 artifacts found, and I located the entrance to
what I assume is the ultimate trial thingy, up in the windy eastern desert. Guessing I get in with all the artifacts.

Probably a couple more days of noodling around then I can wrap with all secrets found. I'll never get all of the trophies - I don't like to speed run, so I won't try for the speed trophy - so I'll call it good on my second time through. Which means I'll have gotten ~25 absolutely delightful hours out of the game. This is a joy to play.

Help me GAF, this or Shovel Knight? I only have time for one. I'd like something more similar to Castlevania than Metroid.

SWD2 is a much better game, but its focused more on exploration and puzzle solving, with minimal combat. You might want to get shovel knight instead, but personally I think SK is pretty average.

Beat the game last night and did the trials tonight. Took me 3-4 attempts to get through the trials, the chase part and wall jumping were the toughest for me. The game overall is excellent, liked it better than samus returns and its a huge improvement over the first which was good on its own. I think the ending leaves a lot of possibilities for a third if they choose to go down that road.

I really like Shovel Knight and am pretty surprised at the other responses, but it's more like a platformer (think Megaman 2, with discrete stages and always a boss at the end) than a metroidvania.

Can't really recommend this if you're looking for something like Castlevania either, since it's more focused on exploration, traversal and environmental puzzle solving than combat, which Castlevania has tons of. It's a great game though!

Maybe Cave Story is more for you? Though that's way more linear than say any post SotN Castlevania.

I have a question, the caves you come across, I am almost certain I am finding all there is to find in them, I have spent ages looking, and I never get a blue tick?

Then you didn't find everything there is. Sometimes you gotte come back later with advanced upgrades though, so don't sweat it. You can clean the map up in the end-game.

Shovel knight is pretty mediocre imo. This is pretty good and addictive, although sometimes slow paced, depending on how eager you are to collect everything.

The truth unfortunately. SteamWorld Dig 2 is way, way more fun. I appreciate the effort that obviously went into Shovel Knight of course.

Thanks guys. I'm surprised at the responses as well, I only ever read about how great Shovel Knight is. It doesn't have to have a lot of combat, it's just that my only other Switch games are Splatoon and Mario Kart so killing things would have been a change of pace lol. Steamworld Dig is a lot prettier, though, and it's cheaper. I also don't like the 8bit soundtrack in Shovel Knight too much. Guess I'll go with Steamworld!

I really hope you enjoy Dig 2, it's a fantastic game. I'm curious though, why did you skip BoTW?

I think there are lots of factors that attributed into Shovel Knight being as popular as it is, almost none of them has to do with how good the game actually is.

Anyone have any advice on best place to farm the blood drops/gems/stones?

Having a hard time in some of the trials and want to go in at my next attempt with that upgrade that lets me trade them for health.

Many people love Shovel Knight so take our advice with a grain of salt. Perhaps you'll end up loving both games but I assure you SWD2 will not disappoint.

there are two caves next to each other, go into the left one and there is a snail you can quickly farm. make sure you turn the perk that ups the chances for blood drops on.(its one of the ones that make the game harder).

also when you do the trial turn on the revive once upon death perk. you should be good to go then.

Thanks man, appreciate it! Totally forgot about the increase blood drops perk.

The trials only took me a couple attempts, but they were awesome. Felt really great to complete that as a cap on the entire game.

I will say that the trials being the reward for 100%ing the game is a bit of a let down. I'm not mad or sad or anything, I just think it would've been a cool opportunity to put something at the very end of the trials as a final reward - like letting us play as Rusty or something. Doesn't even have to be anything more than a sprite swap (abilities can stay the same). Or it unlocks the entirety of the first game or something.

I miss when there was cool stuff like that at the very end of games.

100%ed the game and beat the trials, the trial of "Skillness" was definitely the most frustrating.

Overall it was an excellent game and felt fantastic to play, I just wish it was a bit longer. The traversal mechanics you unlock by the end are great but there aren't that many areas afterwards to use them in.

Anyone know if there are any plans for DLC or updates?

I don't think that's necessarily true, it's a meticulously well-crafted game that teaches you how to play in its opening stages really well, and that, alongside the gentle humour, likeable main character and decent soundtrack, encourages people to persevere. All of that is good game design.

Agree that it benefited from a huge amount of publicity being an early, successful kickstarter project. Being promoted by Nintendo, the NES-style graphics and it's core game mechanics riffing off of Megaman and Duck Tales isn't going to do any harm to word of mouth either considering it was before 'retro' became routine. However, both the word of mouth following release and reviews were really strong because it's a well-rounded, strong game too, it's just that the surrounding publicity thrown towards it meant that it rode a tide of goodwill that made a good game into a ridiculously successful one. Right game, right time, etc etc.

Really enjoying SWD2 at the moment. Such a joy to play with the hookshot,
rocket pack
etc, I'm going back to old areas to exhaust the hidden items and secrets because it's so much fun just to move around.

100% in temple of guidance this morning, woo. Three regions down. I'm at ~96% in all three of the others. Gonna continue scouring tonight. Slowly but surely.

It would be boring if the controls weren't so good. It's just fun to
jetpack around and use the extended grapple hook.
You can travel so fast and with such agility it's kind of crazy.

Just finished, 11 hours played, 67% secrets found. Happy with that!

One question- what's down at the bottom of the main mine,
is that the trials then? I was expecting the final battle to take place there, not the way it did!

Also, the end sequence-
I found the checklist of 'rebuild civilisation' (tick) 'find fen' quite moving. Bring on Steamworld Heist 2, and great work Image and Form. Really enjoyed that.

Quick question feel free to spoler:

I'm where the gate to Rosie is blocked and they say to find pipes in the Jungle forest area. I am trying to go to the right of the jungle forest where it shows the blue X. I am looking around down below the water area above it. I don't see how to get over there.

Find the acid swamp, its to the right from there, easiest way is to jet pack up and right through the breakable blocks. Hug the right hand side of the main shaft and you'll find a way through.

Thank you! Great game!

I wonder if I'm looking for nods where there aren't any but I wonder if the end
going into Space. Somehow ties into Steamworld Heist as a prequel of sorts.
