Twisted Metal Demo Impressions

Wtf? He didn't allude to that at all. Don't be a jerk.

sorry, kind of quoted the wrong person
i was agreeing with him in response to "I heard this a lot on games of the year deliberations on different podcasts (GiantBomb, IGN, etc.). "If the game is not fun in the first 30 minutes, it's bad"."

After waiting 15 mins to matchmake...I managed to play about 1.5 hours. This game is AWESOME!

Feels a lot like previous TM on the PS2. The game feels very smooth even with all the carnage!

The controls take a while to get used to.......really old school feel to it. I feel the game can a lot more fun once you get used to the controls.

Even with the few vehicles available, I can feel that each vehicle feels really different....a lot of diversity. Each vehicle main weapon even have alternate fire.

I'm too old school to try the Talon.....he looks a bit imba....thoughts?

yeah, i play with racer controls to be atleast a little more modern :D still forget to use mines and shields and the freezer, why arent those just pickup weapons too?

its still funny to see the cars come to a dead stop in less than a second from top speed and start reversing. you can turn the car around while stopped and everything :p its retarded but in a good, fun way :D

There's a turbo dash you can do with turbo activated. Double tap to start turbo then a flick of the controller to dash with it. Unless I completely misunderstood the tutorial.

Ah ha, the more you know. I didn't do the tutorial so I was working it out as I went.

Right, I spent some more time online (managed to win a game) and the controls have definitely clicked with me now but they do take a while because it's radically different to anything else. You can find yourself doing some finger gymnastics, especially when your chasing someone and need to boost, jump and fire at the same time. Does there need to be a 'brake' button? I find it redundant with the quick turn there but maybe I am missing something and the brake is a powerful tool to use?

Is it just me or does freeze not work half the time? I can never kill those annoying choppers in nuke because I see my freeze hit them but they just keep on flying.

I wish holding brake would go into reverse and double tapping it would do turbo. Plus they should map a rear view option to the bottom D-pad button, they said everything is taken up but that button is free oddly. Most of the AI fighting is them chasing you so this would be really helpful.

Fucking finally beat that challenge, with the Death Warrant. Game's pretty fun, although frankly I'm still pretty much just mashing R2 and L2 when I'm near a car, not really applying any finesse. :p It's really about freezing cars and using shield, and trying to take them one on one. I have no idea how to properly use some of the weapons. There's this huge missile that always seems to fly off far into the distance.

It's not free, it fires weapons backwards. Jaffe said that there is code for rear view mirror/look back and if it becomes an issue for people they can change it.

Gave it a whirl last night, been a TM fan since the 1st one but I haven't really put any time into any of them since TM Black. I only played the single player mode, but it totally felt like TM. I was really impressed with the size of the level, and while I was a little worried when I saw the complaints regarding the difficulty, I still killed the AI 6-0. It is all about the health packs, and I found with some of the weapons there is a charge time, to the person saying some of them didn't seem to do anything but fly off into the sky.

First you post saying the demo was rubbish and inaccessible now all of a sudden the game is pretty fun. You done the same in the uncharted thread. Oh no game is so hard it's not fun. Oh look I'm winning I like this game. Pathetic.

Which one, the power missile? It doesn't lock on, only fires straight but it does a ton of damage.

Unless you're referring to something else, in which, my mistake, but I'm not entirely sure what every weapon does either.

The buttons are maxed out. Simple as fucking that.

I, honestly, would remove jump. I have only played SP, but I don't find myself using it very much.

I also wish you could swap l2 and l1 and r2 and r1. I REALLY dont like using r2 and l2 to shoot.

Ok so after extensive time with the demo I think it's time to organize my thoughts and finalize them. So I'll get my negatives out of the way first.

First complaint: The turbo ram being to waggle sucks. Not a fan of it at all. I know every button is used but damn I hate waggle. I'd love to find a way to do it without having to shake the damn controller. Maybe double tap the boost button could do it.

Second complaint: Also as mentioned I once got knocked around and landed on the backend of Outlaw. I could not get off of my backend no matter how hard I tried. I fired weapons I tried jumping. I tried rocking the vehicle and nothing worked. I remained there till someone wondered over there and destroyed me.

Third complaint: The Crimson Fury is way too damn hard to control. The other faster cars don't seem so squirrely.

Fourth complaint: Single Player AI. That's been addressed by Jaffe though and isn't that bad in retail. However for a demo that can turn some off to it.

Fith complaint: Lack of weapon pick ups on the maps. As others have said there are tons and tons of turbos. I'd really like more weapon pick ups. Also I'd like to see them more obvious. I'll be driving along a ton of cars and pick up a homing missle for example and not have even really seen it till the last second as I picked it up.

Now for the pros I have a ton so I'll just write up my thoughts there instead of doing a list because that would take up a huge page.

The gameplay is just awesome. The controls are good other then turbo ram. The framerate is rock solid. At the same time it's a good looking game. It's obviously not aiming for realistic graphic at all. It looks like a current gen Twisted Metal and that's a very good thing. The cars other then Crimson Fury have a good feel to them. They have some weight but not too much. It's a nice cross between realism and arcadey. They archived this very well. Also I feel that the cars are pretty balanced. The larger ones are slower to turn and pick up speed but of course can take a beating. The small ones have very little health but they pack a damn punch. They are indeed glass canons. The loadtimes were pretty good I thought. It never seemed to take long to load. I also loved the way the matchmaking is handled. You don't get kicked from the room post match. At the same time people can join mid game. This keeps you in the game and not wasting time looking for another match. There seems to be a lot of options too from soundtracks, to adjusting the amount of screen the game takes up. This really is nice so that you can adjust it for your TV.

So as some may know I was very crititcal of the game pre demo. I won't lie and I still don't like the idea of each car not having it's own driver. I very much will miss having a story and ending for each driver. That was some of the most fun I had with Twisted Metal in the past. I loved to see how Calypso would screw the drivers. However the gameplay in this game without a doubt has won me over. If the single player plays half as good as the demo then I'll enjoy it. Hell who am I kidding. I'm going to get my money's worth from the damn multiplayer alone.

So I'd say based off this demo if you have loved Twisted Metal in the past or have played the demo and liked it then the game is a must buy. I'm glad I have a preorder on it. This is another game that will never leave my collection. Course that shouldn't surprise you. I own all the PS Twisted Metals and the PS2 Twisted Metal also.

I play on the racing controls and I really don't see any use for the brake button (R1). They could have used that for turbo dash.

Next gen should have 2 more buttons underneath the controller, IMO.

You sir, are a dumbass. The demo is still not accesible to first-time players, the controls are complex, and you act as if I was the first to complain about the AI. I don't even know WTF you're talking about regarding Uncharted. I've logged hundreds of hours in UC2 and UC3 MP.

It's some sort of power bomb or something flies off in an arc-like motion.

Yeah I completely forgot it did that, whoops.

I really want to play on the training map, why is it there but we can't fight on it?

The gas tank?

The gas tank?

yeah i thnk so, figured out you have to press R2 again to make it drop where you want it to.

y'all should be ashamed
The flaming chainsaw does a FUCKTON of damage. My God. I hit a guy and it did 137 points of damage, lol.

I'm still a bit confused with some of the special weapons. But I just now realized you can go through training with each car and learn about each unique special.

I'm gonna go do that now!

The Napalm? When you release it and when the target is near a enemy you press the trigger again and the Napalm shoots down from the arc. The closer the target is closer to the enemy the more the damage.

Game is so last gen.

I don't mean that in a bad way necessarily, but it's SO last gen. The music, ui, controls, game modes, etc. Not the graphics, but it's kind of weird to see stuff like SSX doing the modern games thing and then seeing Twisted Metal still be like 'yep, this is still Twisted metal'

I ran through the tutorial and...fuck, there's so much to learn. Very complicated control scheme which I found to be a bit intimidating. I felt like I needed to take notes and study before playing. And the game is not pretty. That said, I greatly value any game designers who choose gameplay over graphics, which seems to be the case here. I just wish the controls weren't so convoluted.

max damage is 150, the chain saw cool down after you charge it. The start up animation in order to throw the chain saw is long, but does it feel good to hit someone with it.

Thats why you should freeze then use it. Darksides are flaming chainsaw magnets.

And the game is not pretty.

lol, while I was playing the demo, my wife came over and asked me if I was playing an old game. I asked her why she thought that and she said she just thought it was because it looked like an old game. She thought it was from the early PS2 era.

If you find yourself frozen, just keep hitting Square and shake the Left stick around, you will be out within a second or 2.

I wonder if it has to do with the art style. In any case, game is looks alright to me.

Day one...this is the longest i've ever played any Twisted Metal game but its amazing. Just old school chaotic fun with an amazing soundtrack. I just wish I could play with my friend in the demo.

First time playing I immediately changed to race controls. Now I tried the classic controls and they're much better.

Played the one player battle for thirty minutes until I beat and the more played the better the game got. This is now a def buy.

Well, Mr Jaffe, you said on Weekend Confirmed that you care more about reactions to Twisted Metal on NeoGAF than review scores.

NeoGAF LOVES your game.

Is the enemy AI just broken and only come after you or do I just suck?

Also, is there no health drops at all in the SP demo?

Not broken, but only up on you. I still managed to kill one opponent only lol.

Also kinda get used to classic controls which is fine I guess, also I am jumping like a effin kangaroo and havent been able to get into multiplayer - but I used alt acc to download it from US psn so that may be it...

There are heath pic ups in the demo. You can also get health from the drivers of vehicles you have destroyed sometimes.

yeah, only managed to nail one guy after a few tries =/

I thought devs had figured out not to use L2 and R2 as primary buttons. I guess not. Button mapping is sorely needed.

With that ambulance car. I guess I MUST use cars with strong armor to survive and move through, around and in building to get the opponent of my tail.

Also when I was frozen for first until ten time, I clicked on everything and fire freezer, shield and manager to drop mines. I will try the above method of square and left right.

No offense to your wife but she clearly doesn't know much about games. This is going to win any graphics awards but it definitely does not look like an "early PS2 era" game.

It feels like an HD remake of a lost PS1 game (aside from all the unlockables and XP and stuff). It's refreshing, really.

I haven't played the Demo, but I did download it last night.

Twisted Metal 1 and 2 are among my favorite games of all time. They were just so much, well, FUN! I am 35 years old so these were games I was playing in or just after High School at parties and stuff. So much fun!

So needless to say, this is one of my most anticipated PS3 Games EVER. I am so hyped.

Really enjoying it. Although I loved Black, the genre is much better on more powerful hardware. It's gets crazy with so much stuff going on.

So am I mind fucked, or is reverse steering reversed in this. Maybe I have dyslexia or something, but when I'm turning the wheel left (in reverse) the rear of the car turns right.

I don't get it. Even if i have 2 more kills, 2 less deaths, 1 more assist, dished out more dmg and received less dmg than the first played i scored 50 points less. Gotta be more stylish i guess :p.

Otherwise, the demo was great--I can't wait for the final product.
