Supposed. Giving that Weyland-Yutani orchestrated the entire thing there was the distinct possibility they'd encountered the Xenomorph before.Wasn't the encounter in the movie Alien supposed to be the first encounter with any sort of non-human life?

See that's one thing that I didn't like about Aliens - "just another bug hunt" - like meeting extra-terrestrials was an everyday occurrence. Even after multiple re-watches, I still get the impression that in Alien the crew thinks they're the first to ever encounter signs of biologically advanced non-terrestrial life. They don't ever state that, of course, but their reactions and behaviors seem to suggest it to me.
We know Weyland-Yutani knew about the crashed ship and beacon in Alien because they specifically replaced the previous science officer with an android for the voyage.Weyland-Yutani seem to know about the Aliens in the first film though? Its probable that there was contact before but its classified and limited, so for all intents and purposes the crew would feel like they were making first contact

But that's Weyland-Yutani. You expect them to secretly know shit.
It's more how everyone in Aliens talks about different species of extra-terrestrials all the time like they're commonly encountered. Even the scenes on earth the board-members are all "no we've never encountered a species like the kind you're describing before" as if they've encountered tons.
Looks like thethat were leaked ages ago. Incidentally they hadxeno suit pics eating lunch.no discernable tails either
I seem to remember reading a theory that ain the film.crew member is exposed to an 'alien gas' and that turns them into a human/xenomorph hybrid which stalks and kills the crew

I always took that line to mean a waste of their time, like they've been sent on missions to find people or potential enemies and never really do.

Oh, I know. It's definitely interpretation on my behalf rather than actually supported theory. Even if other life has been encountered, though, Aliens does make it seem a whole lot more casual, y'know? There's a line in Alien that also support this, when Ash, Dallas and Ripley are arguing whether to preserve the dead facehugger for the trip home. Ash says, "For God's sake, it's the first time we've encountered a species like this..." Not the first time they've found extraterrestrial life, but "a species like this".

then again, maybe a lot happened in the 75 years between Alien and ALIENS?
I thought it was 57 years? Actually, I thought it was 50 years, though Wikipedia says it's 57.
Edit: IMDB confirms that it's fifty-seven:

People, stop calling it "Weyland-Yutani"
AvP does not count as lore.

Kill yourself.
FUck yourself
Weyland Yutani sounds retarded
Haha, oops...should have made myself more clear on which scene I was referring too! Well I screen capped the spot I was talking about. You should be able to see the claws, especially visible is the crew member's right one. I didn't screen cap the elongated head as it's easier to spot if you watch it slowed down.
Warning: possible spoiler in the following image but mainly speculation on my part.

It doesn't.
Best fucking CSI moment across 12 seasons.
I see a..cyborg...don't see a tail, or back tubes...
What's this space jockey? What did it do in the movie? I don't remember much about Alien.
Wow. I had assumed we were going to revisit LV-426 at some point.
I know the entire plot
Kind of wish I didn't know the ending
