Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

Not open for further replies.
In exciting upcoming show news, an adaptation of the josei manga Chouyaku Hyakuninisshu: Uta Koi has been announced for summer. It will be directed by Kenichi Kasai (Honey and Clover, Nodame Cantabile) at TYO Productions. The manga is an interpretation of the 100 Poems anthology karuta is based on. I'll be watching.
Kasai doing another josei show? Fucking hyped.

Are you trying to singlehandedly kill list wars?
Well, that was more of an opinion on my part that I suddenly wanted to say after seeing their posts. Everyone can make lists the way they want after all, I'm no one to say otherwise. I simply find that as pointless as ranking your own feelings, something eventual or difficult to order in magnitudes.

All you AnoNatsu people need to tell me the best Remon scenes when everything's over so I can just watch those and not have to pick up the show again.

Having categorized inside the genre and accepted as different those movies, to later compare and rank them seems rather incongruent, isn't? Can't we just say that each is an unique experience with their own merits?
I find that they're similar enough to rank though.

Another ep 11

A sigh of relief.
Teshigawara, Mochizuki, and even Sakakibara all remained safe though relatively. Sakaki's took so much damage, Im surprised he is still standing, Teshigawara managed to stand there at the end with Mochizuki's help though and I am glad. I will really be crushed if any of them die.

Otherwise all those deaths, the painful one with girl falling off the second story ledge, and then the dude opening the door to the kitchen and being burnt, ouch. The teacher didnt need to go either, I was sad for her. This got epic

Just because each is a unique experience doesn't mean one can't be better than the other.

Another 11
Maybe makes the rest of the series up until now worth it.

I'm glad you're not worried about
Akazawa, because it's becoming pretty clear she's the dead one.

I also have a feeling
Mochizuki will die. Teshigawara's already hurt, so he won't be the one, but one of them has to die. It's the law of storytelling.

I see. I thought you didn't when I saw you responded affirmatively to the post with the 'pure' adventure part that Jexhius wrote. In that sense, I think that definition is very apt, and that there is no correct comparison to other of his adventure movies.

If thats the one then my earlier prediction would be spot on!

I thought Mochizuki would have died when he was fixing or repairing the tape, it will be interesting to see how, if they do die, it will come to pass, preview gives no indication, so uninformative! yet another tense week of waiting

What episode did you leave off on?

I dropped it after 4. The PV made it look like the show was going to go into full-on drama mode the next episode, and based on my experience with the show I knew I wouldn't be able to take it seriously at all.

To be honest, I'm actually really pleased with how they handled Ichika x Jintan, there is FAR less drama getting them together, then you'd expect to be.

There's so much less drama in Ano Natsu than in Ano Hana. It took a direction very different from the one I was expecting.

They have the least amount of overreaction to their situation of any similar anime couple I've seen. It's surprisingly straightforward.

Since I seem to hear this from multiple people, maybe I'll put the rest of AnoNatsu in my season mop-up alongside Inu x Boku and both seasons of Milky Holmes.

This shit is seriously getting epic. Not much happened in this episode beyond setting up the S1 grand finale, but goddamn I'm liking this! XD

Didn't Misaki run off to kill the dead person? She was right next to Akazawa but ran away from her.

I don't know.
It's not like that girl follows any logic train of thought. I mean, why didn't she just say who the dead person was at any point in this episode?

I don't think these guys know how beauty works.

Taichi is a douche.

How strange that a game about listening to Japanese poems and throwing cards into walls isn't popular in other countries. It's almost like they have much better games to play.

What you talking 'bout, bro? Chihaya's gorgeous.

And Taichi is a douche? D:

Sorry, but I'll just say I disagree with that notion. I understand an overall like or dislike for a movie, but I simply find strange having the precision to rank those uncountable feelings on a list, and that without taking into account the appreciation of only determined aspects present on some movies that simply aren't comparable.

I know I shouldn't post any long off-topic reply in here!

Because she is

Only way to keep things tense is to not let the cat out of the bag. The whole thing feels pretty contrived. You're right in that it could easily be a red herring though.

II can understand this point of view. It would seem unusual to place Porco Rosso over something that's a 'pure' adventure like Laputa, Castle of Caglisotro.

For me, personally, Miyazaki is at his best when he goes wild with the magical stuff and the adventure is kept to a minimum. I really felt Spirited Away had just the right combination of adventure and magical.

I dunno, man, Japan has a TCG for everything and yet karuta somehow still exists. Clearly, Chihayafuru failed to capture an audience because it lacked visualizations of robotic dragons to accompany each card.

Maybe it's a hipster game. "Pfft, Pokemon? I only play card games with ancient Japanese poems written in calligraphy. It's called Karuta. You've probably never heard of it."

Isn't that game like only played on their New Year celebrations or something like that? Maybe that is why people ignores the series. They should make a TV special to air on that day... success guaranteed!

Chihaya's dark secret finally revealed.

The show depicts karuta players more like nerds than hipsters; they're generally highly idiosyncratic and socially awkward. I think that part of the reason that I like the show is that it reminds me of the people I played quiz bowl with in high school.

What's it like to have a blackened heart? :(

It's not so bad; you don't force yourself to watch things that you're not enjoying!

I think you may end up enjoying this series. At least until it starts to drag a little.

Hipsters are usually former nerds, though.

Err... they do. It airs on NHK during the New Year's.

Ultimately, Chihaya's love of karuta is the result of
a childhood crush on Arata
gone horribly out of control and not a need to prove that she's cooler than the Yu-Gi-Oh kids, so I think we can safely put her in the nerd category.
For now.

Gintama 251

These self-aware lazy episodes are always gold.

I'm glad spring looks to be packed because I'm going to sorely miss having this show as part of my weekly schedule.

Figure 17 end

Well that was definitely a finale. Pretty epic, but the red hues hurt my eyes. Stupid glowing aliens.

Overall, the show was definitely not something I'd ever experienced before. Unfortunately, I don't think I'd call that a good thing in this case. It was very clearly trying to be innovative in its implementation of several incompatible genres, but I feel that detracted from the overall focus. The story was clearly about Tsubasa and Hikaru as they lived their life while dealing with the scourge known as the Maguars, but it just felt disjointed for that very reason.

It also felt like a few character arcs were abandoned. I was much more interested in the reporter dude than the "twins", but he wasn't really fleshed out beyond "oh hey, weird stuff is going on, imma awaken my reporter instincts and get to the bottom of this!" I mean him
turning into a Figure
was a MASSIVE bit of wasted potential. Nothing came of it at all :/

I can definitely appreciate the themes prevalent in the show. Abandonment, platonic selfcest, artificial humans, dealing with grief; all good stuff. The problem is I was expecting all these themes being incorporated in a story with a bit more tension. The Maguars never felt like much of a threat and
weren't even directly responsible for one death
. This made me think the daily life elements were more important, a genre I'm not particularly fond of. Even those were inconsistent. In the end, it's a cool concept with dull execution.

Moral of the story: don't let TVtropes decide what you watch.

one thing chihayafuru's done well is make a game as stupid as karuta fairly engaging at times. shame about the last few episodes though.

Thanks to animeGAF I checked out Soredemo and I am amazed.
Probably the best shaft show I have seen and it changes my ranking for 2010 shows.
Thank you animeGAF.
it's good to see more people watching soredemo.
