I also don't understand when linearity became a bad thing.
As much as I like Skyrim I would fucking kill myself if every game adhered to the same kind of structure.
There's linear, and there's "rollercoaster nearly on rails as artificial as can be without the game actually playing itself."
The problem with shooters these days is that most of them fall into the second category. Bad AI, tons of scripting, soft + boring shooting mechanics (to the point that the devs need a wall of noise, effects, and "set pieces" to mask how awful shooting weapons is), etc. etc. It's not linearity of level progress that's the issue, it's how linear the mechanics + design within those levels are.
