I also don't understand when linearity became a bad thing.

As much as I like Skyrim I would fucking kill myself if every game adhered to the same kind of structure.

There's linear, and there's "rollercoaster nearly on rails as artificial as can be without the game actually playing itself."

The problem with shooters these days is that most of them fall into the second category. Bad AI, tons of scripting, soft + boring shooting mechanics (to the point that the devs need a wall of noise, effects, and "set pieces" to mask how awful shooting weapons is), etc. etc. It's not linearity of level progress that's the issue, it's how linear the mechanics + design within those levels are.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it. I just think it was a bit meandering for some people in an already fairly long game. I didn't mind it, but I think some sort of choice for the main conflict or whatever earlier on might have been better for some players.

Edit: I don't mean to come on too strong towards people who are skeptical. In case nobody's noticed, I'm a big Rockstar fan :p

Yeah well, as long as those games fall into the vein of the Uncharted series I'm okay with that too. I felt like Uncharted had those OTT setpieces yet still didn't totally take control away from the player. U3 may have been a bit of a step back there though, but that wouldn't have been the only area that game wound up lacking in.

Aside from shooting mechanics, Uncharted 2 nearly had the perfect formula. Shooting people wasn't satisfying, and weapons didn't feel powerful, but they almost had it. Uncharted 3 was a step back in almost every area IMO. I'm hoping Max Payne 3 can capture that flow I loved in Uncharted 2 with the added bonus of the best body physics in gaming + guns that feel like guns.

Sorry, I can't agree with you there. While I feel like Uncharted's guns could feel a bit meatier in sound and animation, I really enjoyed the combat on high difficulty levels because of the encouragement of quick thinking, twitch reflex and accurate combat skills. I really felt like a boss sneaking through enemy troopers and taking them down without damage. The moments where you have scores of soldiers pouring out after you made for really heart pounding moments and when I got through an encounter without taking much damage or without dying, I felt so great.

It brought about some really entertaining and thrilling shootouts.

Uncharted 3 was fun and it does have some great moments, but ultimately feels uninspired and honestly, a bit heartless in a lot of ways.

I never really thought the game was anything other than a TPS with light platforming elements.

Meh, Uncharted gunplay does nothing for me. I love U2, and like the others, but shooting dudes isn't why, ESPECIALLY not in U1 or U3. The hit reactions feel stiff (or non-existent in Uncharted 3), the bullet sponge enemies don't fit the tone of the world and are just artificial ways of providing difficulty, and weapons sounds are weak. Uncharted 3 had a host of other issues like annoying enemy placement, monster closets, broken stealth, trial and error "find the right path" gameplay, etc.

In comparison, RDR, despite the HUGE step down in character control, is 100x more satisfying to shoot guys.

But yes, Max Payne 3 will ultimately live or die on two key issues: the feel of the "gunplay" and aiming, and the encounter design. If these two things are tuned just right... Well it could be something special ;)

Trust me, I know I'm not majority opinion. I fought the good fight back in the U3 thread, and a number of people thought I was just complaining about difficulty which is nowhere near the issue. All I know is that there are a few shooters that FEEL, LOOK, and/or SOUND far above the competition to me. They're not perfect but F.E.A.R., Killzone 2, Killzone 3, Red Dead Redemption, and Battlefield 3 are in that group for one reason or another. Everything else is a sea of boring, lifeless, soft shooters that I'd be bored with in 10 minutes without lots of flash and noise to keep me distracted.

I'm just hoping I can add MP3 to that list.

Well, I will agree that halfway through Uncharted 3 combat takes a dip for the worse and it does get less entertaining in too many places.

I still have to disagree on Uncharted 2. I though the combat in U1 was fun, but U2 was downright fantastic for me. I can see how spongy enemies can turn people off though, luckily that was never too much of an issue for me.

I seriously fail to see what was so bad about mexico in RDR.

I thought it was pretty cool, and had some amusing characters like Reyes.

I actually liked Mexico for the most part. I liked the characters and the atmosphere a lot.

My issues with it were more with how it was paced and how the missions were set up. I won't mention specific spoilers, but I don't think it was the best approach to have players go so deep into that main conflict playing both sides, especially considering it was all sort of ancillary to your main goal.

But I think that's a potential downside of that mission-based structure they use. That's why I'm interested to see what Houser and co. can do with a linear structure where they don't have to worry about any of the usual open-world mechanics that they usually have to deal with.
I really liked a lot of things about Red Dead, and I thought that some parts were indeed well written, but yeah, I hated every second of Mexico, and I didn't care too much for the overall writing in the game.

My impression was that all the characters in Mexico seemed like they came straight out of GTA and I felt Rockstar's take on the Mexican Revolution to be pretty offensive and ignorant. I'm not well versed in that topic but Reyes felt like a very cynical Pancho Villa and he made me cringe every time he showed up. It didn't help that almost every mission reeked of shameless padding, with Marston helping sworn enemies that are obviously untrustworthy (he does that the whole game, though) and such.

Landon Ricketts, on the other hand, was great, and his interactions with Martson were probably the only reason I kept going.

I think Red Dead would've been a lot better if most characters had been de-GTAfied, but I guess that's Dan Houser's touch. It's a stylistic decision I think made them miss their goal of making something Unforgiven-esque, but yeah, that's just my taste.

I'm just hopping in this thread now so pardon me for probably not being on par with the current discussion.

I bought Max Payne on PSN to play on my PS3 and man did I bring back some great memories. Back in the PS2 days, I beat Max Payne over 20 times. I just loved it. Max Payne 2 as well.

One thing that really stuck out to me as being different from current gen shooters is the way the gameplay has little side bits along the way to keep you entertained. I love how like 80% of the time, I walk around a corner and I can listen to two thugs engaging in a funny conversation. I almost always stop and listen to the whole thing since it's fun, and sometimes useful info or awesome events (like the two guys trying to defuse a bomb and fail miserably).

Shooters these days don't really have this so much. How often do you encounter a room of enemies who are practically carbon copies of each other with cold, lifeless personalities only serving one purpose - to kill you.

The original Max Payne really adds the "humanity" to the characters and makes you believe they're real people, despite being ruthless thugs.

Anyways, with that said, I'm excited for MP3 and I hope it turns out great. I hope they didn't forget where they came from, and that modern day staleness doesn't affect this game.

They mean: "this doesn't look like a Sam Lake production and I loved his style of writing in both MP1/2 as well as Alan Wake and this is why I am still so hung up on the lack of Remedy thing."

It's more than just you. I think it's completely fair for people to wish for the original team to have worked on a sequel regardless of the pedigree of the team taking over. I fucking love Rockstar games (I just doused myself in the GTA4 Episodes and had an amazing time- which I'm pretty sure R* Vancouver helped out on), but that doesn't mean I blindly accept them taking over any franchise out there.

And of course Remedy is going to say they are ok with the game since they sold the IP and if they complained they would look like salty bitches.

I don't remember where I read exactly, but Sam Lake made the story, put him as the main character, acted, build the game, made the script, created max payne because Remedy was on low budget, yet they had one of their greatest success with both Max Payne videogames and become legend (for me at least).

Sam Lake is the core here and if he wasn't part of their team nothing great could get out much. Now because Remedy is having a fat-budget, they can afford to take control on MP3 better. Sam Lake is now somewhere behind his crew in a corner taking advices from him from time to time. If Remedy would let him had again, the privilege of making MP3 entirely, now I wouldn't face with that Hawaii shirt and stucked with bald-beared and I would end up on some serious mafia neighborhoods in Noir York.

I really can't see and understand the hole idea of this plot in Max Payne 3, to see Max taking jobs for mafia, no detective anymore, screwing around at some point and all he can do is to fix it the problem by killing everybody. What kind of story is this, by having such simple summary that I can be found most basic shoting movies.

I don't know, but for me the first game, the summary made sense, the story starting from the death of his wife and baby-girld to some serious mafia, drug laboratories, government being involved.
Max Payne 2 from a simple crime made by the cleaners to some serious mafia gang-wars, dirty cops, packing, close to overkill, hardcore professionals as everything happens just in couple of nights.
Each level and chapter was connected soo good with each other, exactly how you read a book.

At least I hope that I will enjoy the gameplay.

To be fair. Rockstar play their cards pretty close to their chest, when it comes to marketing. Claiming to understand the whole story of the third game and compare it to the originals, may be a little premature. I'm sure there'll be plenty twists and turns.

I felt it was a twisted version of history and so it rubbed me the wrong way. That, coupled with the feeling of padding it just made the game intolerable.

They needed funding for Max Payne 2. Take Two purchased the IP for $10 million from Remedy and 3D Realms and gave $8 million as an incentive towards the development of MP2. This also lead to Rockstar helping out by doing the production work from casting, location scouting with Remedy, sound and voiceover recording and marketing.

Sounds like there was a clash though between Rockstar and 3D Realms whose role essentially became the "producer" during MP2's development and more of middleman in the way. An ex-Rockstar employee spoke about it a few years ago but the source is since dead and I can only get a little blurb of it...
he final nails in the coffin for me were the console releases of Max Payne 2 and the original release of Red Dead Revolver.

Max Payne 2 was a game developed by Remedy Entertainment and "produced" by 3DRealms. Yes, the same 3DRealms that has for years not delivered its promise of Duke Nukem Forever. In the meantime, they're staying afloat by sticking their noses in between developers and publishers and acting as an unnecessary middleman. Rockstar did almost all of the actual production work on Max Payne 2 (including the artwork, the sound recording, location scouting, etc.), as well as the marketing. But we would have to get it approved not just through our cocked-up internal approvals process, but also by both Remedy and 3DRealms. This is why the site feels so simple and traditional compared to most other Rockstar sites - it had to be repeatedly "dumbed down" to make it through Remedy and 3DR. The original PC version site was painful enough - when it came time to revise it for the Xbox and PS2 releases, I became so stressed that I had my first overt office blowup with Scott and ended up storming out of the office.

I can't wait for this. I'm curious to see how pro gamers will play multiplayer.

Lots of positive tweets from them on Twitter and we should be getting something on the event next week. Speaking of next week Rockstar said they'll have a special edition of their Research series going up looking the behind the scenes making of Max Payne 3 including the motion capture sessions and voice recordings.

How much spoilers are there in the GTTV episode?

Very little. I think there's actually more new multiplayer footage than there is single player and what single player footage there is doesn't spoil hardly anything.

Sounds like it was a bit of a clusterfuck, though. Rockstar has had so much weird shit happen to them and their games in the past :lol
