Sony reveals new PSN store

This sounds awesome:

Alongside this we also have a simplified and much improved Search. Gone is the obstructive on-screen keyboard, leading to obtuse and dumb search results. We now have a scrollable list of letters to choose from which is much happier with DualShock controller input, and features reductive input. Say you want to search for Journey, start picking letters ‘JOU’, and the search engine starts to remove letters from the list that would no longer apply, making the ‘R’ you need much more prominent and quicker to find.

I can't be the first one to say that the Menu looks like Skyrim.

What I think is much more important than how it looks is how they got rid of folders within folders within folders and all the variable grid based stuff.

This allows them to spend less time compiling the store every week and spend more time on content.

Can anyone that has seen this or had this demoed if they moved away from modifying the store using visual tools?

The PS Store has certainly come a long way:

Indeed.

Just the concept of having a centralized digital store for a console back then was awesome. Sure it was just an internet browser in disguise but it was serviceable.

I don't quite get how people are saying it looks like Metro or Xbox Live but assuming that's the case hopefully their organization is better than the disaster of hiddden games that MS created on XBL. And both services need to do all they can do to increase discoverability of games past their release window by having featured games, suggestions, or straight up Steam sales for old titles that aren't selling.

Every Console has a shitty store.
However I did always prefer the PSN since its straight to the point.
A lot of digging with 360 and Wii

Why only 'big countries' have a Store? What's wrong with my Euro (I'm from Malta)? - Sony doesn't like my money?

I find it strange, since I have no problem using Steam, Google Play or App Store with a legitimate account!

Yeah certainly needs a way to filter in our download lists. Did a format of my drive the other day and finding things like DLC etc was a pain going through over 500 individual download entries! :(

I like the look and I hope the speed is far better than the current one. Also goes live on my birthday so I will enjoy checking it out on that day!

I think it kinda looks like the video unlimited app they have on ps3.

It certainly looks better but the proof will be in the pudding it if it is laid out any better, faster or has a more elegant solution to looking through your download history.

Oh, and I'm still waiting on a web store too =/

Indeed. They really need a competent web store there pronto. If I'm on vacation in another country I should still be able to purchase my games and put them on a queue to download on my PS3.

The download history also needs some filter and sorting options, yes.

I think a lot comes down to maintenance.

Each individual EU store is curated and often differs from one another visually and structurally. (Edit: What this means is that someone sits there and edits a binary in Adobe Air to manually move the folders around / update the front page and that gets downloaded every time you open the store.)

I hope with this update that all changes and it's the same worldwide with just a field in a database that says which countries are going to see the content in the store.

For example with MS your account country of origin defines what you can see in the store while at the checkout they do an IP check that checks if you're allowed to purchase said content.
(I can't point to a source, as this is original research and I've had MS Customer Service confirm it to me on the phone.)
But because MS, unlike Sony, is very good about every country having access to the same stuff you almost never run into this issue.

The N64 introduced the analogue sticks to consoles, Sony adapted and improved the concept for the dualshock. Again, a huge positive.

yeah that is right.. I mistook the PlayStation Analog Joystick (the flight stick) for a "stick".. it was more like a Flightsim joystick for the PC.. it came out just before the N64 stick..

Pretty Microsoft-y. Not exactly in love with it but I think I'll get used to it. I don't really care about what the storefront looks like as long as there's quality content available.

The modern analog stick maybe, or devil analog stick due to the destroying of manythumbs, lol. But there have been plenty of joystick like devices long before the N64 and PS1 came about, on a console too.

We will have a full preview of the store from a lot of sites soon and we will get to know more about the store then.

This is more like a teaser from TSA :p

What we actually need is worldwide parity between the different stores

Improve performance and stability, and allow me to sort/search the download list and that's all I want. Well, that and a web interface so that I can purchase away from the PS3 and have it download when I switch on (or when the PS3 checks for PS+ updates in the morning).

I think it looks great, hopefully it works as well as it looks.

Now what about cross purchases between regions?
Hell, even charge something under 1€/$ more would be fine.
That already works albeit by first loading up the wallet of the store you want to buy something from.

Works for me with 3 stores I buy from. 2 is probably all you need though. (UK/US)

This is Sony we're talking about. So the answer is they're still looking into it.

Looks worse. Why do they always have to have some sort of background? A solid color would be nice. Can't read the text half the time.

Look good, will look good on my TV, can't wait.

Love these kinds of updates, feels like something fresh despite being on the same system.

These all sound good but the bolded, surely, isn't practical? You do mean like the thumbnails you can set for videos on the XMB, right?
