Sony reveals new PSN store

Can someone show me an image of metro or Live Marketplace that looks anything like this redesign because I am not seeing it?

Has more of a Steam look IMO.

This sounds awesome:

Alongside this we also have a simplified and much improved Search. Gone is the obstructive on-screen keyboard, leading to obtuse and dumb search results. We now have a scrollable list of letters to choose from which is much happier with DualShock controller input, and features reductive input. Say you want to search for Journey, start picking letters ‘JOU’, and the search engine starts to remove letters from the list that would no longer apply, making the ‘R’ you need much more prominent and quicker to find.
That sounds a bit like the YouTube app, which is horrible.

Looks good IMO. I will miss the blue too, this looks a little too much like every webpages in the world... but it's not really a bad thing.

BTW, Beep sound is good enough for me but I guess bringing Reznor in would still be a good idea. ;)

Playstation FB has images up as well:

A pointing device doesn't require to aim down the sights to point at something.

I realize that, but it's something that changes in relation to where it's pointing, that device is motion based. It's closer to an actual mouse then it is to a move controller.

Of course the new store was designed with the limitations of a traditional controller in mind. This doesn't mean it wouldn't benefit from pointer controls to some degree.

Besides, it would be nice to access the store from a Move game (say, Sports Champions - no Navi) to buy DLC or whatever and be able to actually do that without having to pick up the DS3 (or the navi).

Well I have no problems with a move designed Store as long as it's optional, I was just saying that store with the layout they're showing, using with a move controller with be more of a burden then anything.

Wait, wait

Like the YouTube app on 360? (and I guess PS3? I haven't used it on PS3)

I found that scrollable list of letters to be one of the most atrocious things ever, and I hate the entire concept of results-while-you-search and have always disabled it on things like Google. I know how and what to type to find what I want usually, and I find instant results to only be convenient for casual browsing, and infinitely less intuitive for finding a particular video (especially if it doesn't have 7 bajillion views and 4,000 search tags attached to it).

But MOSTLY that scrollable list of letters. It's awful. It takes SO LONG to type ANYTHING and it is in no way better for controller input. Hmm, I could scroll through 13 letters to get to the other end of the alphabet (even more if I go in the wrong direction or if there are numbers on the list), or I could click at most 5 or 6 d-pad directions on a keyboard and hit the letter I want much faster. Or even faster (typically), use the old numpad letter entry feature.

Nope. Ancient, arcade-game-high-score scrollable letter lists are apparently the way of the future.

We should be thankful Microsoft still lets us play our games that I think are hidden somewhere in that store.

I like hyperbole too. It's fun. In fact it's the funnest thing ever. Yes, the funnest thing ever.

What's going in that picture anyway? It's a full screen of ads, is there still a menu somewhere (my guess would be you can hide the menu with the triangle button)?

Yes, much in the same way that Amazon.com is an endless stream of ads. LOL

I'm assuming that it's from the Films part of the store, not the Games, so maybe "Recent Releases" ? Also seems to be a page indicator as if there are two others pages available to view.

Edit:Looks like most already commented

looks way too 360-ish for my liking

whatever. I don't let storefronts stop me from getting the games I want.

You'd just point and click though, right?

That pointing and clicking with be easier by pressing a few buttons though. Considering how the store is design the move would be no benefit.

Move with be useful if you had several columns and rows of items where moving with a controller would take time (considering you'd have to go one by one).

as a Xbox 360 MarketPlace hater, i am uneasy with change that involves taking 5 hours to browse for something

I wouldn't get all worked up yet until we actually get to see it in action.. they're promising that it's way easier to navigate now and that it has a much better performance. One major thing I was excited to see was filtering/sorting your download list - even though the download list feature isn't confirmed as a day one
it probably won't be
there's still a lot of stuff they're finally addressing.

All the other posts about those god-awful whole screen images that white out the text are great examples .. now that shouldn't happen anymore. Also yes that is the video store .. I'm glad they're simplifying it a bit.

That remembers me the incredible will power it takes to buy some games or DLC on PSN... I wanted to see what had been released for Dragon's Dogma, and it took ages to find the list.

In terms of UI design, it looks like Nintendo is copying Apple, and Sony is copying Microsoft.
I hope Europe won't be left behind... it took several years to have a dedicated button to access the demos on our store.

I don't get the suggestion the new UI copies the Xbox dashboard. Take a look at the current PSN store, it's basically that but with the menu hidden (presumably off to the left).

hope they switch the keyboard to the type Steam uses in big picture mode, haven't used it but anything seems better than what they have now. Happy they're at least improving the search.

I think you mean the virtual keyboard Guerrilla Games made for Killzone that a variant of is now in Steam's Big Picture mode.

And no, it looks like it will be like Vidzone and the new YouTube app where you get a line of letters and it auto sorts on the fly like google does with what you are putting in.

That and the 360 dashboard/Metro UI as a whole isn't anything new by design standards.

Looks fine, I thought the old layout was still superior to the Wii or 360's so I guess I'm not one of those people who found it "confusing".

The UK PS3 store has a lot more problems than it's UI but this is a massive improvement. As for it looking a lot like Metro, well who cares. Better is better and this was long overdue.

What about the things it actually needed?

screenshots on all games
video preview on all games
demo on all games
online store accessible from a PC/Web Browser
remote starting of downloads
gift games to people
change PSN ID

+1

I would add to this list the ability to place a small comment on the items, like Google Play.

I second those plus these for me:

Ability to filter search/download history by console, paid/free, game, type, etc
Ability to sort search/download history
Pre download, if you pre order AC3, you should be able to pre download it and start playing at midnight on October 30th
Pre order TV shows/Movies like you can pre order games now
Ability to buy TV series at discounted prices (as opposed to getting each individually). You can do that with games now like Walking Dead.
Rent TV shows for $.99 like on itunes
Music store to buy MP3s directly from music unlimited streaming (i.e. listen to a song you wanna purchase, just click and buy)
Remove $5 minimum on wallet (with minis, $.99 movies, $1.99 TV shows, etc, it shouldn't be necessary)
Integrate ebooks/comic store together with the other stores, making it seamless.
Move support (for TTP)

The store has a long way to go, but it's a good start.

Yup. prepare to see horrible intrusive ads on the PS3 going forward.

I think there will definitely be ads. If it keeps PSN free of charge and basic multiplayer free, then I'm okay with it. Hopefully non intrusive ads though.

Me too actually. We are not alone, there was a thread on the US PS forums about it. I really can't comprehend the thinking of the people at SCE. You'd think stuff like that would be blatantly obvious, so I can only guess there is some technical limitation or they are just incompetent.

Depending how they set up their databases and data network, it might not be an easy fix. I feel pretty confident it's not a simple, "UPDATE CUSTOMER_TABLE SET USERNAME = 'NEWUSER' WHERE ROW_ID = XXXX" otherwise they would have done it already.

I'm missing the point of a store to sell me things? It's a store. They're going to advertise to me. And if they're a good store, they're going to tailor those ads to my purchase history.

You're missing the point that I was talking about why there's no menu in that screenshot.

LOL

It's as simple as saying what you want on the 360 (with kinect). Or simply typing in a search with the keypad.

If I want to watch something, like The Avengers. I just say "Xbox, Bing The Avengers". It then shows me every Avengers movie, game, music, etc...item available. It's great.

People that don't like the ads crack me up. From some of the posts I read you would think some of you struggle to find the door when you leave your own house. I never pay attention to the ads...they don't even register when I'm on Live.

I could/can ignore them on PSN too. Do you people freak out during TV shows when the ads (on a service you pay for and CAN'T ignore) come on?
