Sony reveals new PSN store

I like the way this looks much more than the blue grid thing, for sure. Looks way easier to find things, which is great.

Not sure I like the super dark black theme. I hope its either customizeable, or simply alternates based on the current sponsor, as the present store does.

Haha. Microsoft has tricked all you guys into thinking anything simple with a sans serif font is a Metro ripoff.

This doesn't look like Metro. I've worked under the Metro brand guidelines and I'd say this is pretty clearly it's own thing. It still has the Sony design flare to me.

It's not amazing looking but it's better than before and better looking that what little competition it has from the Wii and 360's digital storefronts, IMO.

I'm still not understanding the logic behind why so many here think this looks like metro. It just doesn't. I can't wrap my ahead around it. Is it because it has... tiled pictures? Do people also think Pinterest and google image search look like metro?

There are pictures and a small font. METRO! Did you hear the can't call it Metro anymore due to legal reasons? It is now called 'Windows 8 design' lol.

Navigation wasn't ever a problem for me as I would check in every 1-2 weeks. That's 2 clicks -> new releases -> everything new this week
I used&liked the full text search for all other cases and I hope the didn't make it worse now with that letter-thingy...

The only thing on the store itself they could really improve for is to group every content for a single game (like even trailers etc.).

But boy do I hope they worked tons on the download history stuff. After some years of downloading content it's completely unusable. If I want to re-download something I have to use the full text search to find the item in the store itself, never even mind checking what stuff you have on each PSN account and what of that is installed etc.
If they didn't improve massively here, I'll consider this update a fail as the store itself wasn't really broken anyway.

Aesthetically it looks ok, maybe even prettier but somehow it doesn't look like the PSN store anymore, maybe like Steam or something.

I guess it looks more like metro (or really any modern UI) than before. I think grouping items into hubs is what 360 has done from the start and that really makes a lot more sense as far as basic UI design. I got used to PS Store so it was never an issue to me before, but I always thought the base design of the entire marketplace was always beter on 360. I really think Vita marketplace needs A LOT more attention though.

Watch this space!

This is the reason they will sell ads IMHO.

Microsoft sells ads on the Xbox 360 Dashboard at a CPM of between $19 to $23, depending on the ad placement and the type of ad. You’ll pay an extra 20% for animated or video ads, and if you’d like to select specific demographics for those ads, you’ll pay an extra 15% per “targeting criteria,” with the maximum bump being 30%.

So if I’m running a video ad that I want to send to two specific and overlapping target markets, I’m paying between $28.50 and $34.50 to Microsoft for every 1,000 people who see my ad.

The minimum spend to put your ad in the kind of rotation that might get someone’s attention, according to the source, is $40,000.

Many companies spend much more when they buy an ad for their product. “$250,000 will get you a good run for about three weeks,” my source stated. “If you do multiple campaigns like one for a trailer, one for a demo, etc., that’s where you start crossing the $500,000 mark.” Keep in mind this money simply puts your ad in rotation, as Microsoft sells multiple campaigns at a time and, if you aim your campaign at your target market, you’ll be increasing the amount you spend on your advertising.

It gets crazier: The data shared with the Penny Arcade Report shows that Microsoft estimates 16 million impressions for an ad during a holiday, so an ad with a $21.50 CPM would cost you a stunning $344,000 to control that spot for the day. You can also buy half-day increments. Microsoft estimates that ads during a normal weekday in the first part of the year enjoyed 9 million impressions, with 15 million impressions over the weekend. Based on these numbers, Microsoft estimates that it would cost $193,500 to control the entirety of an ad spot for your average Monday with what’s called a “road block” ad. Start layering on the features, however, and that price can begin to rise very quickly.

I contacted Microsoft and asked how much advertising revenue impacted the profitability of the Xbox 360. “We don’t share this information publicly but we can tell you that, since 2010, the advertising business has grown 142%,” I was told.

Microsoft does own aquantive, which manages all ads on xbl and the dashboard. AFAIK Sony does not own any ad company. Nor do they have any expertise in it so they would either need to buy one, or outsource it.

“If you notice the dashboard redesign added in more spots for ads than were on the blades so they have more inventory to sell,” my source explained.

Looking at the pics on the first post, you can see real estate for ads there. It's only a matter of time before they start appearing. As long as they don't affect performance, are not intrusive, and they keep the free functionality of the store and psn still free, I'm ok with it.

I can't get too worked up if there's ads in the store. Unless, of course, the store takes over the entire console... :(

My gut feeling is that the core-design of this UI for the new Store is based off what the PlayStation 4's UI will be.

Looks better I just hope games don't get lost so quick. Marvel Capcom Origins has already dropped off the new releases. Games get lost too quickly. Also Japan has an awesome setup aesthetic and content wise. Why is the USA and Europe so far behind?

I don't think they look that close as far as appearance or implementation goes. I think next gen you will see Sony move closer though. You have to have search right from dash and you need to be able to access the store from inside a game. You need screenshots and videos to be able to launch right from the hub. You saw them try and and some ad space in the Vita UI and I think they now they'll need a little more of that next gen.

It looks nothing like metro. Except for the slick clean look to it. Metro has the cascading thing going on this does not.

Y'all is reaching with no damn limbs smh

Filtering by console type isn't even good enough because chances are demos will still show up. We should be able to filter our download list by something like Full Game (by console), Demo, Premium Avatars, Premium Themes, and so on. The more filters the better.

The store itself is fine and didn't need to be changed. Waste of resources.

If they want to have a robust filter option, then you should be able to filter by more than one thing. I.e. I want to only see my PS3 full games that I paid for or I want to see the psp demos that I downloaded in 2011 2010 or whatever.

They'd be better off using those resources on PS4, though. Ah well, maybe that's why they're doing this to begin with.

The store will be reused and improved on PS4. Better to get started now and work out the kinks, much like XBL started on XB and improved on 360.

Licorice-flavoured booze?
Ads on the 'store' I can deal with, and tbh it makes perfect sense, ads on my dashboard or xmb though are a big no no for me.

Seriously? Outside of the actual functionality of the layout you don't think the average person would mistake the new PS Store for the 360's dashboard/store at a quick glance?

Not at all. I dont see how anyone would mistake them.

That said, we need to see a PS store shot without an ad background, or see both interfaces with the same game featured.

But its pretty clear they are distinct. The MS one has all the categories spelled out, instruction buttons and also your username info all on the screen. If anything the old PS store was more like MS than the new one.

I don't see how a redesign is gonna help all that much in actual use since there are just so many different categories of stuff.

I second those plus these for me:

Ability to filter search/download history by console, paid/free, game, type, etc
Ability to sort search/download history

QUOTE]

This more than anything! Because I've had PS+ since day 1 my download history is over 600 items long! I swapped HDD's and trying to re-download everything was nothing short of a nightmare.

The only similarities I see are they both use a tiled grid view and they both use words in some capacity. Describe the ways they are similar.

I don't say this out of defence for Sony, nor am I trying to be obtuse in any way. I just don't see it.

Besides having tiled pictures. Its not really that similiar. XBL has tabs to help you search and PS store doesn't. The current PS store only shows new releases within a 2 week period. You have to search for it which is a pain sometimes.

Looks like they just hide the links on the left in the new design.

Looks much closer to video unlimited beta on ps3 IMO

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/09/27/video-unlimited-preview-coming-to-playstation-3/

Matter of fact, I think the beta helped them work out some kinks before rolling out the game store. Wonder how integrated the two will be?

Also, I like that on metro you can directly play the game with one click of the button from the store, not sure the ps3 store will support that.

Dark backgrounds and tiles for adverts, wow, they're SO similar.

The new store is pretty obviously a natural extension of the current store.

If I were Sony, I would've made the PS Store even more similar to the 360's anyway but not to actually copy them or anything. The problem with the current store is that the interface is completely different from the XMB, so it's inconsistent and doesn't come across like an integrated part of the system. What I would've done is come up with an interface that is more consistent with the XMB (not exact but with the same fundamental functionality) and in turn, comes across like it's integrated into the system.

Same thing goes with the Vita. Completely different look to the store for a completely different UI.

Looks more flashy, hopefully the search features are as robust as they claim.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bd/Wp7_musicvideo.jpg

that's very similar looking, though if you're right about the tiles only sliding off screen like that when the search menu is brought up that would be slightly different i guess, unless 'brought up' means scrolling to the left a bit.

like i said, i'm not knocking it at all. i like it and i'm not saying Sony are copying anything. i'm just saying the similarities are certainly there.

The funny thing is that Metro takes a lot from XMB.....

I think it looks really good, much better than the current store. hopefully they have taken a page out of microsoft's book and are using the hard drive to store a cache of the store.

i just hope there arent ads for anything but PS Store Content on there.

I dont want Sony telling me to buy a car or a can of soda when i go browsing their store.

It looks nice, but they could've gone with another font. I can't imagine it being any worse than the old store, so yay!

All I want is speed. The store needs to load when I open not have a bunch of loading icons for each graphic. Speed should have been there number 1 priority. Hopefully they've done that.

Also, has anyone noticed that they removed the Playstation branding? It now just says store. Interesting, getting ready for Gaikai?

That actually is interesting. Maybe they plan on using this layout across the board including on non PS devices as an app.
