The Phantom Pain, aka Metal Gear Solid V, Announced (360/PS3, "Moby Dick Studio")

Me thinks "Ground Zeroes" and "The Phantom Pain" are just the names of the trailers and the real subtitle for MGS 5 hasn't been released yet. I think they will reveal it at E3.

and yes, it's the same game. GZ is just the prologue to MGS 5. Just like the Tanker was in MGS 2 and Virtuous Mission in MGS 3.

Kojima said Ground Zeroes is the prologue to MGS 5 but that doesn't mean it's a different game.

and there is NO WAY this is possible on Vita, lol.

Shit. That would be awesome.

I still think that Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are the same Metal Gear Solid V game, but I believe they are 2 games inside one game.

Playing Ground Zeroes and then switching to Phantom Pain at some moment. Maybe we'll keep switching between the two of them ar certain points, making those weird flashes as signals for the change.

I think Kojima is going full meta this time, with the Phantom Pain having their own "developer", "titles sequence" and "credits" to fully make this as a two game experience.

Makes sense, since Kojima can't make other games that isn't MGS he's creating another game inside a MGS game, using a nickname Joakim Mogren he's able to at least create an illusion of making a non-MGS game.

Probably Ground Zeroes is MGS gameplay while PP is where Kojima is able to put all his other ideas for non-MGS games...

That's a pretty solid theory.

Y'know, yosp did say that it was worth watching the VGAs as a Vita owner, and it does seems weird to suddenly switch to a Roman numeral numbering system... ;)

Want to be hyped, but Kojima always messes with my hopes with all of this cryptic shit. I would love an adult full fledged portable MGS, I have played PW on psp, but it just felt slightly lacking.

I will wait for something more concrete, but this is looking like Big Boss creating his full fledged outer heaven, and if it actually spans 2 games, then I am guessing it is Solid taking down Big Boss for the Phantom Pain variant. Knowing Kojima though it could be nothing like this.

Don't know if this has been discussed, but under "About" in Moby Dick Studios' website where they talk about Joakim Mogren, this sounds a lot like what Big Boss did:

"...who after years of working for a major American developer brought together people out of various game studios from around the Scandinavian area to start something new."

My guess right now is that Solid Snake relives the memories of Big Boss (and others, indirectly), through the use of some database/tech. The weird sounds in both trailers when strong lights are present, or the orange vertical floating bars in the first trailer when looking at computer screens, both indicate to me that the "viewer" is disconnecting/waking up under certain circumstances.

edit: The whole Moby Dick thing is just an experiment to see if people would react differently if they thought it wasn't a game made in Japan, or a joke against Japanese studios who keep trying to make new IPs with Western studios.

Then he wakes up and looks at the mirror and he see that he's actually Desmond from AC.

Then Kojima appears on the screen and says:"Did you rike it?"

Very Assassin's Creed, no?

Finally get that Assassina creed / mgs cross over I have been asking for.

No seriously I bet those universes could mix pretty easily and I have been saying so for a while

Very Assassin's Creed, no?

Kojima had this idea way back. I'm like the ONLY one who remembers. Way before AC game out.

I forget the name, but the was a database of MGS at some point, I think it was released with the PSP digital comics. It was a DNA database that you could use to relive memories (get info) about those characters.

But even before this, the very first trailer of MGS3 hinted at MGS3 being a simulation of Big Boss' memories.

It said "Relive the memories!", and the intro was the end of MGS2, look at what part they chose:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A5acFjVAmA

MGS3: I need some kind of proof the this was not the action of the US government. If you fail, it will be the beginning of a new world war.
MGS2: We need to pass the torch, and let our children read our messy and sad history by its light. We have all the magic of the digital age to do that with. Building the future and keeping the past alive are one and the same thing.

Then you see:

GENE x MEME x SCENE. MGS3. LIVE MGS. Relive MGS. Survive MGS. Time and time again (you see the clock going backward). Relive the 60s. Relive the Cold War. Relive espionage. Relive memories. (man what an awesome trailer). Later on it says "MGS is revived to survive the future."

In the final game you still had the "Snake! You'll create a time paradox!" voice from Campbell (Patriot AI?).

Then we never heard of this idea again. But I'm sure in Kojima's mind it's always been there. Even in Rising soldiers have their memories in their left arms.

MGS1 -> MGS2HD -> MGS3HD

I recommend you forget that other games in the franchise exist.

Horrible recommendation, Peace Walker and 4 are great. If you end up liking the series I say even go back and play Metal Gear 1 and 2, I say MG2 is one of the best in the series.

So, there are theories of Phantom Pain being set between MG1 and MG2, with doctor Kio_Marv rebuilding Big Bossess broken body after his epic fight against Solid Snake...

Chances for that are very slim. Just look at Gouda Jouji's timeline:
DaBGE.png

Ground zeroes start 0-5 years after Peace Walker and in it BB is older, but not much older. MG1 happened 20 years after Peace Walker, there is no way PP BB is 15-20 years older than BB shown in GZ demo.

IMO, PP has to happen well before MG1.

What does canon mean? Same story arc/storyline?

Whoever said this looks terrible earlier on in the thread needs to rethink their definition of the word "terrible". More like fucking awesome!

So do you think people at Kojima Productions and Konami we figured out it was MGS5 in less then a hour of the trailer debiting or do you think that was the plan all along?

If they wanted to hide it better I am sure they could have done things like not show Snakes face as much and stuff.

Everyone from KojiPro was wearing Moby Dick Studios shirts at the VGAs so I don't think they were really trying to hide it.

That would be sweet...

What would be sweeter is if that GZ prologue is really just the final memory of BB at the beginning of the game.

The Phantom Pain footage is actually Solid coming from his coma, after living through the experiences of Big Boss (from MGS3 to GZ), and he's regaining consciousness and having hallucinations similar to AC's bleed effect. Perhaps the doctor is the one who made Snake relive the memories with some device?

That would explain why he sees Volgin in flames, the Boss's horse as a unicorn, and something looking like the Sorrow... because those memories are blurring into his reality. I remember some tweet made last year when Kojima showed off a render of Volgin, but perhaps that was for Rising?

Doesn't explain the missing arm. Anyways, playing the prologue of MGSV as BB, then transitioning to a traumatized, battle ready Snake amazing.

Edit: Beaten by EtherSnake, apparently

Still without luck
Revengeance is canon? I remember the Giant Bomb guys saying in the Quick Look that it was uncanon and I was happy about it.

Why wouldn't it be? KojiPro is working on the story and it's a spinoff series that takes place after the end of the MGS saga.

I agree, but it's also hard to believe that a PS3 can run it in real time.
And as I remember Kojima said that the Fox Engine games would run on Vita, and that there would be another generation of transfarring more sophisticated than the MGSHD one. And if it's a sequel of a portable game which Kojima wanted to be MGS5, so maybe MGSV also has been designed with a portable in mind (obviously with a clear visual downgrade compared to the console version).

I wouldn't discard the Vita version of MGSV (details like to use romanic numbering instead of the normal one for Kojima may be used to tease this things), even if seems too weird.

They were wrong, Kojima is who decides it. And he decided that it's a spin-off inside the canon.

I think that the V in MGSV is a hint to a subtitle, especially since the codename given to Snake in the hospital is V. The V=5 thing is something that I could see Kojima using. I don't have any guesses as to what the subtitle could be though.

Hahaha brilliant!

Joakim stands for Kojima, but what does Mogren stand for?

mOGREn

As in Project Ogre, Kojima's next big release with the Fox Engine.

As in most likely MGSV

This shit better come to PC, it was confirmed that the GZ demo and trailer were running on a high end PC, but that means nothing. Most games shown at trade shows are running on PCs for obvious reasons.
