ANNcast Best of the 2000's Part Two
I only came equipped to deal with bad anime opinions. I was not prepared for people to say The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas is shallow because it is an adventure story, that it was pulp, or that Gankutsuou is deeper than the novel ever was.

Wow, just when I think that they can't go any further...

Yeah, that's certainly...something. Why would you subject yourself to this?

For those of you who have taken the time to examine this seasons chart you may notice that, outside of a couple of potentially shows, it looks like the vast majority of what will be airing over the next few weeks will be forgettable garbage. To help pass the time a number of us will be watching 'backlog' titles - anime series that aired sometime ago but that we missed watching at the time. The advantage of retroactively visiting these shows is that as they are older we already know what people think of them and as such we can chose to watch only well received shows. Moreover, if more than one person watches one of these backlog titles at the same time then there exists the potential to have a discussion about them. A certain unnamed internet forum does this quite regularly and they seem to enjoy doing it.

Wandering Son
Mouryou no Hako
Hataraki Man
Windy Tales

I was thinking of adding one more for a final weekday, but with sonicmj1 really busy, four sounds good.
I'm going to watch Trepeze and Mononoke as promised. I dunno if anyone is going to watch them with me. I haven't decided when I'll start yet though.
These are all the titles mentioned. I am not going to try and push anyone to watch one particular title but I thought it might be helpful if I write a brief synopsis for each one so that you can see if it's the kind of thing you might be interested in watching.

[Wandering Son]

Year: 2011
Length: 12 Episodes
Director: Ei Aoki (Fate/Zero)
Studio: AIC Classic

Shidoshi actually created a thread (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=418554) for this show back when it was airing. I'll just borrow Shidoshi's words:

What is Hourou Musuko about?
Oh, you know, it's your simple tale of a young boy and a young girl as they try to make their way through grade school. They experience those issues we've all dealt with as a child: making friends, being bullied, learning how the world works, wanting to be the opposite sex of what you were born. You know, the basics.

Wait... what?
Okay, okay. Hourou Musuko is the story of two main characters: Shuuichi Nitori (aka "Nitorin") and Yoshino Takatsuki (aka "Takatsuki-kun"). Nitorin was born a boy, but feels in his heart that he was meant to be a girl. Meanwhile, Takatsuki-kun was born a girl, but runs away from the world of sugar and spice due to identifying more with being a boy. Figuring out who you really are as a child is hard enough; immensely more so, as I'm sure you can imagine, when you aren't even sure of your very own gender.

Sooo... this is another one of those boys-in-dresses anime then?
Lord no! In fact, that's one of the qualities that makes Hourou Musuko as engrossing and endearing of a story as it ends up being. In a medium (anime and manga) going through a fetish for "otokonoko" that recently got kicked into overdrive, this is a total breath of fresh air.

I just thought I'd mention that the author of the original manga is the same person who wrote Aoi Hana, so if you enjoy the characterisation and approach of that work you'll probably enjoy this one too.

[Mouryou no Hako]

Year: 2008
Length: 13 Episodes
Director: Ryosuke Nakamura (Nerawareta Gakuen)
Studio: Madhouse

mouryo.jpg

It's a little tricky to talk a mystery show like this one without giving too much away. In broad terms, there's a strange case that requires investigation by various parties to help unravel a mystery. There's quite a bit of talking in this show as well so if lots of that is not to your taste then don't bother with this series. Be warned as well that this series is not overly concerned with explaining itself to the viewer and this can make parts of it rather confusing.

Most of the shows appeal for me comes down to how unusual it is. It's very wordy, it's very dense and it's remarkably unforgiving. The story is based off a book and you can really feel the fact that this was originally literature seeping through into the anime. Normally this would be a problem (and in one episode it kind of is) but most of the time the director, Ryosuke Nakamura channels particularly literary ideas into visual ones in really interesting and unique ways. His unique style and obvious gift for visual composition, tone and editing is the key selling point of the series for me. Normally I'd link you to the OP to demonstrate his style but it appears to have been scrubbed from the internet, instead I'll just pull this music video that he directed to your attention: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfVE994nSrE

[Hataraki Man]

Year: 2006
Length: 11 Episodes
Director: Katsumi Ōno
Studio: GALLOP

hatakari.jpg

“The story centres on 28-year old Hiroko Matsukata, editor at the magazine Weekly JIDAI. Talented and hard-working, Hiroko's colleagues refer to her as Hataraki Man (literally "working man") because of her dedication to her job. But despite her successes in the workplace, she struggles with moments of self-doubt and with the challenge of balancing life and career.”

People occasionally say they’ve outgrown anime, as they can no longer relate to the child/teenager-orientated content. Yet here’s a show about normal people, living normal lives, struggling with issues we can all relate to. Anime isn’t exactly well known for dramas about everyday people living normal lives. So when, through some fluke of chance a show gets made, and happens to be excellent, it’s certainly deserving of your attention.

Each episode manages to have a well-told story with interesting, believable characters and sometimes genuinely moving scenes. I can’t ask more then that.

[Windy Tales]

Year: 2004
Length: 13 Episodes
Director: Katsumi Ōno (Ranma 1/2, Dog Days)
Studio: Production I.G.

This series a little bit harder to encapsulate. It's a beautiful and unique series from Production I.G. where each episode's story ties into the theme of 'the wind', hence the title. Wikipedia and other places describe the show as 'Slice of Life' but that doesn't really tell you the full picture. As I haven't seen the entire series I will borrow Lafiel's words without permission;

Windy tales was pretty incredible, first series I've seen in a while that genuinely impressed me in every aspect - favorite episodes are probably 3, 5, 11, 12 and 10. But every episode had it's moments.:)

I love how down-to-earth and realistic the character interactions were despite the unusual art, it kind of reminded of ghibli in how grounded it was and never resorted to any anime-ish cliches.

The mood and atmosphere was also incredibly well-done, there were also a good amount of "MONO NO AWARE" moments that were so amazing and well-executed.;_;

It's a shame how overlooked this series is, anyone who hasn't seen it already, should definitely check it out!

[Mononoke]

Year: 2007
Length: 12 Episodes
Director: Kenji Nakamura (Tsuritama)
Studio: Toei Animation

mr-medicine-seller.png

“Mononoke follows a wandering, nameless character known only as the "Medicine Seller". The series is made up of individual chapters in which the medicine seller encounters, combats and subsequently destroys various mononoke. The "mononoke” are a type of ayakashi, unnatural spirits that linger in the human world.

The Medicine Seller always proceeds in the same manner, using his knowledge of the supernatural to fend off the mononoke until he can learn the spirit's shape (Katachi), truth (Makoto) and reasoning (Kotowari). Only then can he unsheathe his sword and exorcise the demon.”

Mononoke is yet another visually unique and wholly enticing series, except where as the aforementioned Windy Tales excels in animation Mononoke excels in beautifully rendered images which are brought into crashing relief via the strength of Nakamura's editing. There's really nothing else like this in the field of anime and the mood that the show creates within the first few minutes is enough to let you know that you're watching something special. Before Tsuritama brightened our airwaves this was THE series that everyone knew the director from. Many people speak about it as one of the greatest titles of 2007 (an amazing year for anime) and one of the greatest titles of the decade. There's no excuse not to watch this series!

[Trapeze]

Year: 2009
Length: 11 Episodes
Director: Kenji Nakamura (Tsuritama)
Studio: Toei Animation

trapeze.jpg

Everything that I've just explained about Nakamura's directorial style and approach applies to this series as well, except that it's not quite as dark and grisly as Mononoke. Trapeze follows the exploits of one particular psychiatrist, Ichiro Irabu, as he attempts to help a number of patients with pressing psychological problems.

Backlog Schedule

Unknown.

So anyway is AChannel one of those 4koma shows? It looked really cute and was cheap so I bought it.
Any fans here?

I think it is. I watched it and liked it, but it's really, really slow. I'm not even sure how I finished it, because I usually can't handle slow shows.

Tokyo Encounter 18

This week's guest is Swerita Tea and Throat Medicine.

First they played with the least stealthy ninjas yet in Ninja Commando where they use the ninja art of summoning black holes. Next was Ahh! The Baseball Life To the Top! where all childhood progress happens below the waist. And finally it was Enterbrain Collection+ Amagami where we saw how Sugita gets his kicks and how to talk to girls about the health benefits of not wearing underwear.

You forgot the GIANT BOX:

It's so weird that Sugita basically knows all the girls. Maybe that Love Plus episode of Gintama wasn't that far off from reality! lol

Because Yuru Yuri is a bad show.

You've just lost all credibility .

A channel is fun . But it's just ok. it could have been much better with some light changes.
Toru is the best character.

I was going to use the giant box but there were more pressing images to use in my self imposed 4 images limit.

Well... you missed the best part! This has got to be wahjah, right? lol

I suppose it's the Japanese voice actor equivalent of working with a porn star from a porn film you watched. lol
For what it's worth, I did a quick bit of research and determined that the show he's referring to might be Sket Dance, where he plays Switch and Sakura Tange is the klutzy teacher.

Lol that's bigger than OG PSX cases. The future is surely games packed in Dakimakuras.

That makes sense, since this was recent-ish. It's still funny to think about that scenario.

And you know, don't all these games have porn versions on PC anyway? That must be super awkward, especially if you bring it up while working. lol

What I didn't know was that all the girls from Amagami seem to be apparently from the same agency (if these subs are right anyway). I suppose it makes sense just to cast from the same pool of controlled actors and write up standard contracts that way.

Yes, I like the idea of this, especially as it will galvanize me to consume my anime in a somewhat productive manner!

Mononoke & Trapeze for me.

It was a giant art book, I think. They never unboxed it. lol

I'll be sure to check this show out some time.
It's a different take on the celebrity-playing-video-games thing. Arino is still KAICHOU but these guys are hilarious because they tapped into it by being a part of the nerd industry.

I can only cap so much of this amazing episode!
You aren't kidding. I just got to the
Macross part
! That was amazing. lol

IIRC they were just talking about how Yukana (who voices Ai in Amagami) is with Sigma Seven, the same agency as Yuichi Nakamura, and that's how he got the giant box. I haven't watched the episode recently though so I could be wrong.

Thanks.
I liked acchi kocchi and that was very slow.
Ill watch this slowly over time.
Been interested in it for a while.

Despite how, well, dire things appear there's usually one show that looked a bit iffy that actually turns out to be pretty good. I, personally, don't discover those shows because that would require subjecting myself to a number of terrible shows in the hopes of stumbling across a good one. However there are plenty of others in this thread who are more than happy to the canary in the coal mine, if you will. Let them do their work and pay close attention to their findings.

indeed, this is the game I play :D

many are willing to :wonzo

Yeah, but when one of the other girls came up, Sugita said something like "You have a lot of talented people at your agency" or something.
Or maybe that was when Ai came up. I don't remember. lol

Well since it seem everyone is treating this as backlog season maybe I should tackle some of the shows I've bookmarked. Though looking at the list for once I've noticed some bad shows on there. Hmmm...

Probably talking about another one who's also a part of Nakamura's agency.

An episode about salt.

Salt.

Well, there was
the whole Sayla stealing Amuro's Gundam and wrecking it..
but the part that really stood was the crew's need to find some salt. :lol

Nausicaa of The Valley of The Wind

One of the most beautifully crafted worlds I have seen in a animated film. The animation was masterful and the film score was amazing. This is one I will remember for a very long time.

Lol, I'm not treating this season as backlog season. There are way too many shows with cute girls in them for me to do that. I just want to watch Windy Tales.

Well I'm so far behind on anime that basically my backlog is anything before 2010. I know there are some must see shows that I've never seen that I should take the time to watch.
