I don't play Pokemon games, so maybe I'm not qualified to make the assumption, but anyone feel this is too soon after Black/White 2? Obviously not as close as the two NSMB games releasing so close to each other recently, but not that far off. Or is this normal for Pokemon games?

B2W2 was like a half-generation, so not really.

This has to make Nintendo a little nervous. They don't know what the respone to 3D will be. Depending on sales this could be the start of a new direction for Pokemon or the end of it.

I doubt it. The insane amount of fan art for a trailer already shows that the fanbase is insane for anything Pokemon.

We'll see how it goes in the US, but it's really not a significant enough change to matter to the mainstream buyers.

World wide release? Excited.
I couldn't help but think Nintendo's answer to their worldwide predicament with previous games could have just been to hold off the Japanese version until the others were ready.

It's not like anyone would know.

It's not too soon. Many felt BW2 didn't need to exist and that the next mainline pokemon game should have been on the 3DS.

BW2 was essentially a half entry, as someone beforehand pointed out.

I think another team worked on B2/W2 while the main guys did this. It's 3 years since the 5th gen, which is a good amount of time.

I doubt this will make a large difference. This isn't 3D mario where the game plays dramatically different to the 2D version. 3D Pokemon is simply and upgrade in presentation. The core gameplay doesn't have to and probably won't change. Traversal might, but the most iconic thing about Pokemon isn't it's traversal.

Maybe early by like half a year for a new generation to start after the 'third' title of the previous was released. This will be slightly over a year since BW2 launched. Obviously there is a desire to get this out on the 3DS for sales too.

It's only happening soon because Black and White (+2) were put on the DS which is a dying platform. The next games needed to be on the 3DS and it probably wasn't a good idea to put a Black & White 3 or Ruby Sapphire remakes on the 3DS as that system's first games. So, Gen VI.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but they keep using the word "evolution" for the series. And it's funny because, the games seem to have some connection to the DNA. Chromosomes, the double helix on the logos. Hmm...

Eh, I'm more excited about getting the game before tons of info leaks from people beating the Japanese versions.

I usually pick the water starter, Mudkip was a beast once it evolved and became a high defense Water/Earth type, but Fennekin looks really cute. Might have to get one of those instead.

I like that it's a worldwide release, I really hope it's only a matter of days apart. It'll be fun to play a Pokémon game and NOT have all the information about the game out in advance.

although somewhat alarming its impressive that some of the fanart posted in this thread looks as good as it does

the grass starter looks dumber the more I look at it. water one has potential for hilarious evolutions

The only thing I'm worried about is the attack animations. From the trailer they look a lot longer than in 2D.. and full length attack animations are the one thing that makes 3D RPGs really frustrating for me.

Intentionally avoid playing Pokemon, because I already have so little play time. Therefore, picked EatChildren as my starter Pokemon, since he probably wouldn't last long.

Can't wait to show the Pokemon X/Y announcement to someone I know who is just getting into Pokemon, though!

This is the first time in a while I actually like the look of all 3 starters and am curious to see what all their evolutions are like. I can't even imagine what a bigger Chespin looks like. A bear?

Holy fuck, I was not expecting this. Time to get a 3DS shit...

When I started hearing rumors about a 3D pokemon a week ago (for me), I was assuming complete shit 3D models... this shit looks really clean damn.

You're joking right? The only people who would miss sprites to the point of being upset or not buying it are the people who post on forums like this. This is gonna sell like crack laced ice cream. I've already shown a handful of my friends who play Pokemon the trailer and they think it looks awesome, so I'm set and ready for launch :)

hopefully, the x&y theme refers to mutation and the new pokemon are all horrific mutations of past pokemon.

i also hope the mutations explain the gigantic heads of the human characters.

very excited!

Unlike with Mario, changing the graphics won't change the core gameplay. 2d Mario and 3d Mario play completely differently on a base level. Here, something like that doesn't need to happen. Besides, the current "2d" Marios actually use a polygonal Mario, in case you've missed that detail... There's no big demand for sprites that might be hurt by this change, 2d Mario vs 3d Mario happened due to gameplay changes, not polygons vs sprites.

The battles look fantastic but the overworld...
It feels like the whole thing had to be rushed; the animations (particularly that running) looked awkward and some textures and models appears like they came straight from the DS. That's a little worrying.

Fighting in 3D really is great to see though.

I've been hoping for a reboot, taking place far in the future.. and having no returning Pokemon.. but some descendants from the current ones. It'll never happen, of course.
