Michel Ancel and Rayman dev team show up at fan(?) protest RE: Rayman Legends delay

The 2% number is industry wide on Wii U.

Unless Nintendo itself has released that number (it hasn't), we all realize that number is impossible to know, right? No one has access to that number except for Nintendo. Nintendo hasn't shared it. I'd be curious to know what Harker was referring to - perhaps he's been misinterpreted (or overstated his case, based upon a single publisher's numbers).

I must say, this is pretty ballsy of Ancel and co. A development studio could NEVER get away with this in the US.

I really hope that this tactic somehow manages to pay off in a way that doesn't result in Ancel and the rest receiving some sort of crushing reprimand.

What makes them think they have so much power? If they are waiting for the other versions to be completed I would think it is so they maybe can have joint marketing rather none which would probably result in lower sales. No?

Yeah absolutely. And we frenchies are specialists, we are going on strike/protesting for everything :)
Just checked a regular french info website a couple minutes ago:
- Protests because of gays will soon be able to mary;
- Goodyear workers in Amiens on strike because they will be fired soon;
- In schools professors on strike because some change for the next season in their shedules;
And that's just the visible headlines on the frontpage.

I'm now thinking the full release on eShop in the few next weeks is a more conceivable way to damage control and end this mess, but for a reduced price, not the full 60€ :)
I had it preordered for 34€ on rueducommerce.com (!) but I'd gladly pay 60€ for an early digital copy of this baby.

Ehh, it seems really tongue-in-cheek.

I mean, take a look at Ancel (left most). Does that look like the face of someone who's seriously protesting?

Just what expression would you prefer?

(in both cases I read the person's presence more as "thanks for being a fan, we really appreciate your support, bummer that sometimes stuff doesn't work out quite how you want")

Why do people act like Rayman Legends selling 50k like Origins did is a foregone conclusion? The game potentially had long legs, high used game sells, great word of mouth, significant digital sales and combined with Rayman Legend's Wii U generation spanning marketing association and higher media recognition, maybe... MAYBE this game is expected to do a little better than the last release?

I had no idea games getting delayed was an anti consumer practice. Apparently I should have filed a complaint with the BBB on the entire n64 era.

strike are our national sport :p

Ubisoft said 15-20% Vita, 6-7% overall. We know PC is crazy high, and we know Wii U overall is 2%. I'd say we have enough data to work with to extrapolate for the purposes of our discussion.
So tell me, what's your extrapolated Wii U figure for Ubi then?

Harker's 2% was in reference to dual retail/digital afaik, so that figure's also somewhat irrelevant for what's being proposed with Legends, and factors in a retail only advantage on some titles (BLOPS2, Skylanders Giants, Mass Effect III, Arkham City, Goldeneye Legends, etc).

With digital only releases we've heard nothing but positive results for the most part, even surpassing XBLA/PSN in some cases (Trine 2). Of course that's also for games that are $10-20, so who knows how a $50-60 release would really go down.

only an expression of indignant rage will suffice!

Seriously, though, this is smart move by the devs. Nobody is mad at them about this. Nobody who was going to buy Rayman is now not buying it when it comes out eventually. Everyone is just upset that there are no games to play on the Wii U right now, and here's this game that's totally DONE being held back for no good reason. A soft launch on eShop seems like the best solution, but what do I know? There are probably a lot of levers and pullies that need to be put into motion before even something like that can happen.

Here are the exact quotes:

Here's a random tidbit (not exclusive to Ubisoft), but going along with their digital attach rates... on Wii U for some of the big launch titles, was around 2-3%

Granted, that could be different now as we're a bit further than launch.
I'd hope Nintendo gamers have learned to connect online a bit more since October. They did a terrible job learning to connect their Wiis :)

% of total units sold that came from DD

It sounds to me like he has a source. Maybe it has gotten better, as he suggests is possible. I don't see how or why it would given that nothing of note has released.

That it's $50-60 is why i'm using the 2% figure. It's a full retail game. Even if you factor in a bump for the exclusivity, I just don't see how it's worth their while. You stated this would make sense as a public relations move, and that may be. At least from that perspective I would understand it. That said, I think this will blow over in a week by itself. It's Rayman after all, not Call of Duty.

Is it only a EU/EU cultural difference? First and foremost, he afforded to do this because he's a star, an asset Ubisoft can't afford to lose.

What's passionating is how he chose to defy his boss. One can think they had a chat on this subject already, Yves Guillemot having the last word because he's the boss. Except Michel opened a Pandora Box (actually we already did open it, Michel just had to use us) to move his tower on the chess board.

Pretty pathetic for a development team. If I was the CEO, I'd let them go after they were done.

Worst kind of boss in the world. Arrogant and ignorant.

If anything they should use this to their advantage, Rayman is more discussed now than its been in a few years.

I must say that the spelling error (soutienT with a T at the end) troubles me. Maybe it was just a french fan living in the studio neighborhood who dropped by and got Ancel & some folks to participate :p

Maybe.... maybe.... this frenchmon is even here, amongst us, on GAF.... :D

Man, people are actually upset that high profile devs would actually protest against something they are upset about.

GAF will outrage at anything.

So the workers should keep their mouths shut, as in they are not paid to think?

Absolutely not.

Workers should feel free to speak up and raise their concerns. But there's a proper forum; your bosses office, a conference room, etc.

The difference here is that it was extremely public.

Doesn't the fate of BG&E2 tell you how much of an impact Ancel can make when it comes to real business decisions?

Yeah, releasing the game as an eShop exclusive would be a great business move right now. They would gross more money without having the production and shipping costs.

Yep, so it leaves three scenarios:

- Those private channels failed, so it's their last mean to communicate, which is worrisome
- It's a PR move
- It's just a fan passing by with a cardbox, and managing to have Ancel & other folks taking the pose :p

and what about all the preorders people have?

Wherever they preordered it, it's that business' problem.

There's always option 4, which is he didn't care and did it :p

Still, at this point, it doesn't look like any serious protest at all.

This is your solution, Ubi.

Start a Kickstarter, presell the WiiU version and release it when you reach your goal and ship directly to the buyers. All of the money is profit.

Then release in stores at the end of the year.

probably a stunt planned by their marketing department but whatever, better than the other terrible "exclusive demo" PR they've been doing

I just wanted to say I've never visited the UPlay community and I don't own any Ubisoft games, but the UPlay community has been showing up on my home screen since a couple of days after this mess started, with all the complaints.

Well, Nintendo just released new connection rates and as of January Wii U is 74% and 3DS is 80% (up from 72% in October, which is a staggering increase). PS3's last known connection rate was 70% in August 2010 for comparison, and 360's LIve/Base ratio is only 60% as of today (down from 66% in 2010).

2-3% you mean, and it's evidently not industry wide either. So where's your extrapolation from that? Not to mention Harker's figure seemed to be units while Ubi's were revenue (hint: the latter tends to favor digital on consoles).

And that's not to say this move wouldn't make sense sales wise either, just that the real advantage is in diffusing the PR clusterfuck with relatively little risk. It'd definitely up Ubi's digital take on the platform anyway, which tends to favor such "core" and "franchise" games anyway.

This is a very strange situation.

I hesitate to say this, but I think Ubisoft is holding it back because they are worried about the sales figures on the Wii-U platform.

Well, obviously. They don't want to spend marketing dollars two times(and one time on a semi-dead console) when they can spend it just one time to sell the game on a much larger combined userbase. This is the only reasoning behind the delay for the Wii U's release, that I can see.

Yeah, someone else mentioned that as well. Miiverse has probably figured prominently into grabbing some people who would otherwise have been unaware of this situation.

Seriously, though, this seems somehow less severe for a Frenchman. In the US he'd be out of a job, I'd imagine. I don't know if they would risk losing one of their best guys over this, though.

ancel's studio's also the one that does all the work none of the other studios are capable of, year-in, year-out. they can't just lose them without losing their best work horse.

The good thing is, Ubi's management is now closer to their fans as they have ever been. When was the last time for instance Yves Guillemot received drawings from his fans on his mailbox on a daily basis?

I think it being Wii U exclusive helped the games chances in sales. Nintendo fans are notorious for supporting exclusive games on their systems and with the game drout as is, I think Wii U owners are itching for a new game. And quite frankly this game had a lot of hype than Origins ever did.

Go ahead and release it later on he other systems, but let Nintendo owners have it like it was promised.

I've heard a certain "marc" is sending to Guillemot Lapin Crétin's drawings on a daily basis :p

Let's not pretend the road traveled to get the Wii U version done, was easy. I imagine it hurts to have to spend a significant amount of time away from your personal life under the pretense of creating and releasing a game by a specified deadline...

...only to have it delayed by 7 months anyway.

over-time over-time over time!!!!! ah delayed for 7 months.
LOL
it's sucks to crucnch for OT hoping to meet a deadline then when it is done... uh uh delay for 7 months.
