Kotaku Rumor: PS4 out in November, control with your phone/tablet, maybe $429/529

People gladly pay for cell phone service, cable, internet, music, Netflix, etc. at far higher rates than PS+ or XBL.
Because those are things that people haven't already paid for in some other fashion, unlike XBL's paywall for basic online MP.

Who builds and maintains the infrastructure? When a new internet feature needs to be added to the console, its up to the publishers?

No.... The publishers need to focus on games... That's it. The console manufacturer has to build the APIs and maintain the network. They hire the staff and the programmers.

People gladly pay for cell phone service, cable, internet, music, Netflix, etc. at far higher rates than PS+ or XBL. I just don't understand the reluctance to pay a very reasonable fee to the manufacturer so that they can maintain, support, and upgrade the online infrastructure.

Exactly.

We already pay for those things...so why should we pay extra for it?

it's like paying for the internet on every device you have. S if you have two laptops...you have to pay for the internet on both? Don't get me started on Netflix being blocked on Live...that's the dumbest shit ever.

Because they're soulless and greedy corporations, unlike the mom and pop telcos, the cottage industry internet providers, and small independent media shoppes.

This plausibly is exactly what happened with the source who subsequently passed on the pricing info to Kotaku. $429 makes zero sense in terms of pricing structure. The basic SKU will probably debut for $399 here in U.S.

Yeah. Those odd numbers like that are usually reserved for price drops. $189.99, $229.99, etc.

It seems that there is no gap between the R2/L2 triggers and the surface underneath. I sure hope that's not the case, as I hate accidentally hitting either R2/L2 whenever I put down my controller (Was extremely annoying in Dark Souls and the unforgiving NPCs of the game).

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up

All these Kotaku rumours are just BS . Dont believe in these things . Dont know why the site just hates SONY for like eons and isnt banned at Gaf

No , there is no plans for releasing an SKU above 500$. Last i heard , there was gunning for 470$ and a lower sku with 420$ price tag. SONY most probably upped the RAM in the final machine

I have some very concrete info but cant afford to lose my job as all these are just insider infos . Like i said PS4 was showcased to big investors last week . One thing could be right though the Xperia connectivity . But please dont believe in these BS

Good night and i am sure all of you will be happy with PS4 unveiling including the haters :)

I adore these posts. Especially that little tidbit that Kotaku has an agenda against Sony which is clue #1 that this post is completely unreliable. I can't wait until tomorrow so all these annoying "insiders" can go away (at least temporarily).

No way Sony charges for basic online play. But for other high end features? I can totally understand charging folks for that. but I refuse to believe they will make it so that you can't touch online without buying PS +/world. No. Fucking. Way.

Other than that... I'm pretty cool with everything else. The pricing is definitely around what I expected too.

There's no way they don't announce the name tomorrow, NGP was super far out when that happened, wasn't it?

It would be dumb to have such a massive announcement, on this scale, and not release the name to bolster headlines, create a better hash tag, etc. there's no way they've built this up not to announce the name.

I don't know how much away the 4 = death thing has on the culture in Japan, but would be out of question for them to have different names in different territories?

Could someone explain how would their source know all of this? Being a developer and having a controller and a devkit is one thing, but knowing details like launch dates, pricing and plans for the online service.. wouldn't he have to be someone really high at SCEA? and even then I doubt more then a few people who make these decisions have all of this information

To gain more market share. Free online with XGC and Party Chat would be a huge differentiator to the Durango.

You probably overestimate how huge it is in your average consumer's eyes. Your average holiday buyer doesn't look too deeply into things like what subscription is going to be involved later. They mostly just look at the price tag and go.

The only thing to counteract that is maybe a few of those people learned their lesson after after spending a good $300 in XBL fees after buying that shiny 360.

I call BS on the 4 = death thingie in Japan. 4th Installment didn't kill the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Megaman, Street Fighter or Resident Evil,

this.

i have been in development for over 15 years and i have never been given such information. most of those features dont even work on our kits. you can only get this type of information from someone thats like a DD, or TD that works at sony.

Thank Microsoft and their paywall strategy. Nintendo probably feels foolish with their Wii U free to play solution.

Almost every gamer I've talked to expected the PS4 to have paid online.

Because that infrastructure -- the one used to enable the actual online gameplay -- is (other than lobby functionality) peer-to-peer, doesn't go through the company's servers, and therefore has little to no bandwidth cost.

That's why it's free on PC and should always remain free.

They're not making you pay for something they provide... they're making you pay for something, just because they know they can make you do it if you want an essential feature.

Same with the utter silliness of charging an XBL fee to give you Netflix access. It makes no sense... the only cost to Microsoft, at worst, was for the development of that app. How does this justify putting it behind a paywall? It doesn't. It's just done because they can.

Wait, so you mean it doesn't cost MS anywhere close to $10 to change my Gamertag??? You're kidding!

Hey kids, let's learn some Japanese.
What's April (4) in Japan?

"Shi"gatsu

----------------------
No one will call Playstation 4, "Playstation Shi".
Even if you want to say "4" in Japanese, there are tons of other ways to say it.

Stop that "4" taboo bs already.

*goes play some Devil May Cry 4*

Maybe this is what will save Nintendo if WiiU turn out to be the only console that let you play online for free?
Probably not. But this is huge if true. Probably the only thing that could derail the PS4 hype train at this point.

Yea the 4 thing is kind of silly when we have:
Biohazard 4
Monster Hunter 4
Devil May Cry 4
Metal Gear Solid 4
I could go on and on.

If by 'it' you mean 'money', you're correct, they haven't gotten 'it' in a long long time. Personally I hope they make a lot of money doing this because as gamers we're much better off when Sony is profitable.

What? Gaming division has been profitable in 3rd and 4th quarter even though the Vita is not selling and PS3 sales are shrinking. The new Slim is highly profitable for them.

Sounds like you're the one getting fucked buddy.

really? that was your brilliant response? fuck other people, they can't think for themselves I have to think for them? Maybe I'll just think the service is worth the cost or the ability to play those games in that way is worth, to me, what they're charging?

I'm the one getting fucked but somehow you're the one who winds up butthurt? seems strange.

The only reason dropping the 4 is plausible is because of the vita. I could see them calling it playstation orbis, but perhaps they attribute poor vita sales to the name switch up..who knows. Itll have playstation attached to it for sure though.
