Cliffy B says things about microtransactions

No your not. You aren't entitled to anything after you make the exchange. So by this logic if you complain about con men and scams your just a whiner, and you feel entitled to something that isn't owed to you.. apparently.

If someone committed FRAUD you can pursue legal action.

No they are not. The fact there's a new million games every day doesn't make the good ones "very few" just like a ton of shovelware crap didn't negate Mario Galaxy's existence or any other good game on the platform.
You just look very uninformed, speaking without any knowledge whatsoever.

No, most of the games on IOS and Android are low rent crap!
I do keep an eye on the stores from time to time!

Good games are rare and a lot of them are ports of old games, most are crap and time wasters!

I thought you were serious for a second and my jaw almost touched the floor. Good show.

If someone told you that the horse you bought could go 50 mph and you bought it, only to find out that it only goes 35mph. Yeah, you are pretty much entitled to be pissed about that and feel ripped off.

Then that person committed fraud. Fraud is illegal. Then I can be more than pissed off, I can sue the seller for any losses that I have incurred. If I have my own unrealistic expectations that isn't the sellers problem.

why on earth would you ever want to debate someone who thinks that they're correct? you're only supposed to debate people playing devil's advocate.

I guess Cliff just wants people to scream his name and tell him how much Gears of War 2 made them cry and how Unreal Tournament is better than both Quake and Doom.

If microtransactions and DLC are just the modern form of arcade quarter munchers and that model is so superior to the traditional packaged good model of console video games, why don't we still have arcades?

The best part of this thread is everyone who thinks that is actually Cliff posting:

https://twitter.com/therealcliffyb/status/307328767230099457
I'm pretty sure that was him, but I don't think he posted past the first two pages. Plus neither of those posts I saw were really further the discussion but just humorous (hilarious I think) posts.

And I can't blame him, I like to try to try bringing up other points, but you have a lot of posts that just take cheap shots and and nothing else, plus I'm not sure how much my own post was really debatable. I don't think a GOOD middle ground would piss off many, not for long anyway. And frankly games ARE pretty low on the totem poll of business that should value ethics/consumer friendliness over profit: I'd prefer most game makers keep in mind something that's fun to play and only allow some (preferably for non-competitive games) to pay to grease the wheel in interesting ways, but it's not like healthcare or banking where I feel it should be absolutely critical to go FUCK YOUR PROFIT, do what is best for the people.

Then rewind and try to argue my points. I didn't think that I needed to preface that mutually beneficial trade is free from force. Fraud is obviously a form of force.

What If I feel it is fraud? What then? Is it not because of an implied EULA that doesn't hold up in court?

I can't stand the idea of people being able to buy their way through an experience faster/easier. Good on these devs, but stuff like that makes me much less likely to buy a game.

All microtransactions should be hidden in the main menu, though. I don't want the real world infiltrating my (single-player) games.

It doesn't matter if you feel it's fraud. It has to be fraud. There is a pretty clear legal precedent as to what fraud is. I don't see what this has to do with micro-transactions though.

I couldn't agree more with Cliffy - and in my opinion people who don't understand his points are the ones who don't understand the video game industry.

We should just let them take money out of our accounts whenever they release a product. That will surely fix things.

Poor Developers.

I don't know if that's a jab at me, but my point was I can play any number of games released before any market or industry issues. I don't need to buy future releases, and if a lot of others feel the same or if this market isn't sustainable, the people that are hurt the most are the countless developers/designers without jobs.

I'm not pitying the developers, I know the consequences and I know I won't be the most affected.

LOL, ok you know nothing.
Again, even if there were 2 billion apps and 99% of them were crap with 1% being good stuff it would still blow the socks off 3DS' and Vita's libraries combined by a huge margin. List wars are silly and I don't have time for that, just educate yourself better. I can't speak for Android because my phone isn't powerful enough to play most stuff, but on iOS there's a great game coming out every other week, it's a very healthy platform. Check out the monthly iOS gaming |OT|s before making false assumptions (only time-wasters and old ports in-between a huge pile of crap... right.) next time.

There are some gems on Android, but it doesn't even come close to the App Store. Most of the gems are on iOS anyway. That doesn't mean that there aren't a ton of fun games though. The whole argument against phone games are stupid anyway. What makes Crashmo a real game while Monsters Ate My Condo isn't?

Translation: I couldn't back up the silly shit I said so I swore a bit and left the thread.

Well I can understand why he wouldn't want to jump into a forum argument as 1 guy against a whole bunch of people. Not an excuse for the passive aggressiveness though.

I gave EA $2.99 of my hard earned money for Dead Space 3. I don't care it. I didn't pay for the game it was gifted to me. I was my way to say thanks for a great game.

Button games are inherently better than touch-only games because they already have touch screens on Nintendo's handhelds.

Button games provide developers more flexibility in game design. You cannot argue against this.

Nah, I got what you were saying. I was being factious.

He seems to have missed the boat on the Origin hate.

I've yet to see someone hate on EA because Origin exists. People hate on them because they've made their content exclusive to Origin, they've removed consumer choice and freedom and that's a bad thing.

It'd be like if they decided to open a chain of retail stores, only opened one per town in the dumpiest crappiest part of town and then pulled their product from walmart, best buy, eb, etc. and forced you to only shop in their shitty dumpy ass store.
Dude, that's what Valve did with their shitty Steam service in 2004.

To produce a high quality game it takes tens of millions of dollars, and when you add in marketing that can get up to 100+ million.

Everybody knows that Grays and Browns are the most expensive colors.

Do any of you fuckers still actually play games, or do you just hang out here all day long and play digital fantasy football with the industry? :)

Cliffy brings out the worst in people.
I think it always happens when major figures in the industry make controversial statements. Hell, CliffyB's probably less abrasive than the likes of David Jaffe.

I'm sure most of them are pretty easy to get along with though, or at least kind of fascinating to listen to.

That was exceedingly uninteresting, all things considered.

"They made things for money, you know"
"The cost of living is very high and caviar doesn't come cheap, neither"

Well, why should we care, exactly?

You probably shouldn't and game developers shouldn't care about you.

Cliffy has come out and said that the "hipster/boomerang kid generation" (aka the generation that put food on his table) doesn't understand that people need to eat and feed their families.

Last time I checked, people graduating after 2008 have to work exponentially harder to put food on their own tables, let alone any hope of supporting families any time soon.

But fuck them, right?

LOL, they must all have philosophy degrees, right Cliffy?

No, that is actually him.

He's talking about continuing to post after his initial handful.

He doesn't have to keep posting, per se, but he can address some of the counterarguments in a later blog post. GAF arguments and AMAs don't really mesh.

Agreed. I've backed out when getting multi quoted but he could have just said that or like the guy above me said, address it in some other way.

At this point he looks like the heat in the kitchen was too hot for him. ;)

Read the thread.

he's mostly right, though i don't think "vote with your wallet" is the right interpretation of what a smart consumer would do. "bail wholesale" sounds more like it. i don't believe that i can affect change in this market, so for the most part my solution is "find a new hobby."
