Does anyone still play Tatsunoko VS Capcom? I got the arcade version last week and love it. I can see a more experienced player getting bored of it quickly compared to MvC3, but I'm having a blast w/ it.

In hindsight, it a test kitchen for MvC3 - some of the features carried over to it, some tweaked, and others dropped all together. Just a shame it died so quickly, there doesn't even seem to be a community for it. Being on the Wii probably didn't help.

Was curious what everyone thought of it, which characters they liked, etc.

Being on the wii was the biggest detriment to the games longevity. It wasn't even the tastunoko brand. Hell, the people who brought wii's to majors just to play it were annoyed.

I liked TvC when it first came out and generally enjoyed the game. It was fun and flashy. I played Karas and some random other character.

There is a community for TvC - some people on GameFAQs play it together. At least, they were doing so up until November; I haven't been online since then.

I still pop it in from time to time. It was janky as hell, but Baroque and Variable Air Raid were amazing mechanics. I mostly used the Gatchaman team, Ryu and Saki. Ryu was a damn combo machine in that game.

Tekkaman Blade was my favorite character from the Tatsunoko side. That air dash.
Shame that Joe doesn't have his Level 3 from that game in Marvel.

I love it, but as a huge Gatchaman fan I was sort of the target audience, I guess. Hell I play Ken the Eagle and I hate charge characters. Ken/Joe 4 Life.

Yea unfortunately neither of them are in the arcade version. I think I'm missing 8 characters between the Wii versions. I've been using Ken & Jun, Chun & Alex, then testing out a few others (Polimar, Casshan, even Roll). Reminds me of the pre MVC2 roster sizes, for better or worse.

Same here, I have figures/statues of half the Tatsunoko side so this was a dream. No Speed Racer (or Racer X) really sucks but playing as Gatchaman is so awesome. No Joe in the arcade version tho :( - fortunately Ken & Jun play pretty well.

I think the route EVO is taking is fucking awesome.

PAX had a similar sort of course of growth from when it started, just much quicker.

The more panels, the more publishers getting involved, and the more accessible it's becoming for noncompetitors while still caring the same about competitors is only a good thing. This upcoming EVO is looking like it's going to be the biggest and best yet.

And even still with EVO, I saw FR viewer numbers peak at like 27k during SF.
I disagree completely.

I'm skipping Evo in favor of other majors this year. Evo is fun, don't get me wrong, and you should go if you can, but as far as I'm concerned it offers a significantly diluted experience for an extremely inflated price compared to every other major tournament I've been to.

You just don't get the chance to play nearly as much at Evo, period.

FR organisers were right.
The MorriDoom effect in action. ChrisG killing stream numbers quite literally.

It's pretty crazy that after COD the two most watched console games are UMVC3 and SSF4. I didn't include Bioshock because it's a new release and it will fall off soon anyway.

It's unsettling to me to know that Runescape is watched more than Street Fighter 4 or Marvel.

Am I the only one?

It's a bit unsettling to me as well. The new runescape doesn't look too different from when I played it all those years ago. I don't get the appeal as a spectator.

Pretty simple really.

At most majors, the tournament is the only show in town, so to speak. Nothing else is really happening at the venue, and the FG players make up a significant portion of the guests. The bedrooms are a short distance from the event ballroom. All of this means that it's really easy to just wander the halls and find people to play, often times very notable people at that. Season's Beatings 2012, for example, was probably kind of boring as a viewing experience from home (I recall the Marvel top 8 being particularly dull), but it was amazing if you were there. Roughly one third of every pool consisted of top or well-known talent. Pretty much everyone on the 3rd floor were tournament players, meaning we didn't really have to worry about noise complaints. I ran a stream out of my room with all sorts of notable players and got to play people from all across the US and Mexico while I was there. I literally didn't sleep Saturday night. It was awesome. Final Round this weekend was similar for me, with the exception of being tied up running one of the official streams for Friday and Saturday.

At EVO last year, I realized by the end of it that I had spent so much time just walking around and watching compared to other tournaments and it kind of bummed me out a little. The venue (Caesar's Palace) was huge, and not just a hotel, but also a casino and shopping plaza. The bedrooms were extremely far away from the ballroom, and a lot of people stayed elsewhere to save on costs. The BYOC in the ballroom was pathetically small (2 Marvel stations total when I was there, one of which hardly worked due to disc read errors), to the point where I'd much rather they have scrapped the room for industry panels entirely and gotten rid of most of the booths in the main ballroom to make room for more setups. Finding anyone to play was just such a chore, and by the time I did it could take almost an hour to walk to where I needed to be. Meeting up with all the GAF peeps was cool, though, and props to God's Beard for arranging the dinner. <3

Basically, unless you expect to place well in the tournament, you live closer to EVO than other majors, you want to meet up with people going specifically to EVO, you're more concerned with watching than playing, or you want to hit up Las Vegas in general, I can't really think of a reason why I'd recommend going to EVO over most other tournaments I've been to even though, overall, I had a great time and I'm glad I went. I would just put Final Round, Season's Beatings, CEO, and even the yet-to-happen Fall Classic higher on my priority list right now.

Speaking her from a spectator perspective mostly. EVO is trying to be the Olympics really, but I can see the desire for there to be more setups for casuals, etc. I remember you complaining about the BYOC space getting smaller before. I think that's a warranted concern, but I always pictured it as less of a place to go to fraternize and get your casuals in and more of the serious stuff because of the amount of systems and stuff you need to even supply the tournament.

IIRC they had a relaunch recently and just announced another big one, but yeah it's unsettling. I'm ashamed of the amount of time I spent on Runescape, or trying to hustle in Varrock alone.

Who the hell would willingly watch a Monster Hunter stream. Game is fun to play but terrible to watch.
I did the first the first time the other day and it was a horrid experience. The broadcasters tend to be half asleep while they play too

This isn't true, UMvC3's peak during FR was pretty much within a 1000 viewers of SF4, maybe even higher. I know both hit 26k+ and maybe 27k at some point.

I'm going to be going to TFC as long as it doesn't conflict with a large M:TG event. I definitely agree that local is better unless you're able to get more out of the experience than just the tournament. I went to PT: Amsterdam for MTG and I wished I had been able to have a few days free to see the city instead of the inside of a convention center. Alas, my college student budget didn't allow for that. :(

No, F' that. That means there are more people I can sell my 10 year old goods to. I just gotta figure out where they are so I can get rid of my crap.

I showed my friend whos new to fighting games the finals last night. He thought it was boring as fuck comapred to the other matches. While I showed my other friend who doesnt play fighting games the stream where apologyman beat fchamp with skrull, and he thought it was awesome as hell.

To be fair, EVO 2011 was better on every point you brought up than last year. Rooms were closer, hall was bigger, more BYOC and everything.

Back when ChrisG's team was vulnerable, it was fine because he could, and did lose, but he's gone all Zero Squad on us in the last few months.

Just show them the Sethlolol finals instead. BEAR POWER! :)

Would your opinion change if EVO did better with the casual station set-ups? Maybe if they did a dedicated small ballroom?

For me, that is my only real negative with EVO.

Me personally, I don't like wandering around hotel rooms looking for matches. I wish it was in a central location (maybe my old man arcade roots make me this way). I wish it was centralized. I've done it at NEC's before. And past evo's. Always felt awkward to me if it wasn't friends/people you kinda knew.

I wish EVO would rent a small ballroom and keep it open 24 hours for casual set-ups.

I miss the EVO's at cal poly. They had the arcade and the BYOC room. No need for hotel room shenanigans.

I'm with Enzo, I love the way EVO is right now. It's sorta PAX like. I don't want it do that direction all the way of course, but I like the vibe it has going. I just wish they didn't neglect the BYOC. EVO 2010 had set-ups in the back, and that was fun. Saw some old tekken dudes I used to play with and random SC4, EX3 and CVS1 games. It was fun.

There were also BYO setups at EVO 2012 outside the ballroom. Then they kicked them out of the hall because it was some sort of fire hazard. :/

Pretty sure it would be somewhat hypocritical to skip out on EVO for being too much of a spectacle, only to go to St. Maarten instead.

Yeah definitely. I mean the only reason I'm there is to play games, and that's the only critique I'm going on about. EVO 2012 just wasn't on the level I expected out of a major in that regard.

I seem to remember the Evo organizers saying something about making more space for BYOC this year, but damned if I can remember when and where. I do know that they weren't very happy with the way things turned out at Caesars last year.
