PokéBOMB VI: Return of the Fairy (Pokémon E3 Information Summary)

Asshole rivals can be pretty good comic relief, so I would say I do miss them a bit, but overall the "real" rivals with personalities are better. With that said, it would be neat to have both types serviced, not sure why they can't do that. There are already multiple rivals in the games, one of them could just be a dick.

Rivals need to be more surprising and challenging. I haven't played BW2 yet so I don't know how that one guys is but he looks cool.

I personally think they need to drop this whole "we're friends" aspect. I think it makes Pokemon too soft. There should be a character who poses you a challenge while also being a threat. Whatever happened to the classic rivial trope where you could be walking in a town and all of a sudden that random asshat shows up to screw you over?? (We all know we didn't heal before then.... OR save!!)

Nowadays its like you follow your rival someplace, Know the fight is coming up shortly, or start doing a particular story mission with them.

That's why I connected with Silver more than anyone really. He was a guy that had nothing to do with what I was trying to acheive, but yet he was on my ass every step of the way. It made me want to beat him every time. Gary was good too.

I want a Rival who has it out for me. A Vegeta perhaps. All ways looking to get a step ahead. That was the point of Vegeta & Goku's relationship. They made each other stronger by competition.

Rival
Noun
A person or thing competing with another for the same objective or for superiority in the same field of activity.

Rivals are usually friends competing in the same field.

I guess, but I preferred it when the rivals were villains themselves because it gave you a sense of accomplishment for defeating them. The rivals of the past 3 gens haven't felt much different from just regular trainers that just make you battle them every once in a while. Zero personality and wasted opportunity, tbh. You don't feel the competitiveness at all.

I never felt threatened by rivals, since they were always too weak (or at least until gen 3), or fought you during times when something far more threatening was happening. (Villains or tougher battles like gym leaders.)

The only games in which the rivals were villains were G/S/C and B/W.

That's not a good thing. Nobody wants a game full of Yamchas.

By peter out I mean finding out their true goals. It'd be pretty boring if every one and their mother wanted to be a Pokemon master. In fact, that's why I love the story of BW. And even if they had changed their goals they were still kickass.
N pretty much mimicked Green in Gen I

To be fair, it did pop into to my mind that they might be aiming for more interaction between the cast. (And I admit the word "Persona" did pop for a second.)

Yeah it's something too similar and hilarious.

While I can't defend Hugh for that, Barry and N fill that niche really well.

Barry was okay. Best rival in recent generations, definitely. Still wasn't convinced by N.

It adds variety. It brings a sense of camaraderie which has never been present within the games

I agree, starting your journey with your friends, like B&W is great.
Now you have 4 friends instead of 2, and I expect all of them to have an interesting story.

Hey look its the standard children's anime team of dopey fat guy, short nerdy guy, and girl. Who will of course be joined by the protagonist and serious rival.

Don't really care about what sort of rivals I have - I just want a good game.

And since it was lost on last page:
Widening your group of peers is an interesting move. I wanna see if there's some Five-Man Band sort of scenarios that arise from this arrangement.

The Leader: You (male nickname: X-Meister :D )
The Lancer: Calem/Serena
The Smart Guy: Trevor
The Big Guy: Tierno
The Chick: Shauna

I don't care whether a rival is friendly or not as long I fight them often enough and they don't have a shit team. Hugh was such a disappointment.

Also, its really hilarious seeing people on other sites freak out over being friends with a fat guy.

lol yea, it's nice to see they are going for some variety.

An interesting thing picked up by someone on /vp/: Apparently, there are realtime shadows and illumination affected by cloud cover.

I have to say one thing I am liking about this generation so far is the Pokemon designs. I absolutely hated the vast majority of Pokemon from Gen 4, and Gen 5 was very marmite for me in that I either loved a design or hated it with very few middle grounds, but so far I've either liked a design or at worse been apathetic towards it. The only exceptions are Sylveon and the new Mewtwo forme, which are terrible, but the quality to quantity ratio is pretty strong so far.

Funny that Pokémon Amie is called Poké Récré (like recreation) in french :p
I guess they just wanted to throw in a french word.

Oh damn, I really wanted another rival who was a total asshole like Blue. It was so fun to hate him.

-I was hoping for Xavier/Yvvone, but it seems like those went the way of Blair/Whitlea. But I guess Calem/Serena are still better than Hilbert/Hilda

-Looks like we're getting more "legitimate" cutscenes this gen. Every new generation seems like they try harder and harder to improve the story in these games, and these cutscenes are definitely going to help that.

-Didn't like how all the rivals looked at first, but if GF can do this right, I could see them becoming endearing characters. Still can't stand Trevor and Shauna's designs, though. Hopefully those grow on me, because Tierno's definitely did.

-Speaking of Tierno.....hat or hair?

Because they're not femboys, right? Tierno looks totally RAD.

Whoa buddy, not even all that serious... lol

They just dont appeal to me character design wise, For all I know they may have great story arcs. Hopefully one becomes a gym leader or starts working for the evil team.

Im tired of the Pokemon trope norm... shake it up. Make it exciting

It would be really cool if the Whismur evo line went fairy. That'd be tight.

I feel we will get:

Clefairy (Given)
Chansey (Given)
Togepi (Given)
Snubbull (Buff)
Skitty
Castform
Snorunt

Those are just from the 'Fairy' Egg types lol.. So many Pokemon , I cant think from my head...

What else do you all think will get a type switch? I want a Bug/Fairy

I think that the Clefairy, Chansey, Audino, Togepi, Snubbull, Skitty, and Mawile lines are almost guaranteed to go Fairy. Phione and Manaphy also stand very good chances. I think the Cottonee line and and Cherubi line have an outside chance. That's about it for extant lines. I'd love it if Snorlax went Normal/Fairy, though. That'd be a 10/10 decision by GameFreak.

Shaking the story up, maybe. Core gameplay hasn't really been touched since the Physical/Special split.

The gameplay is mostly polishing of existing stuff. Notice how most moves and abilities are mostly "In Generation I, in Generation II-IV, in Generation V"? For example, Sturdy in Gen V became a godsend. Even if they didn't add much, they polished the pre-existing gameplay so much that I wouldn't even touch HGSS because of the awful speed. Then there's hidden abilities, etc.

Someone should have asked GF why they made Fairy and not some other type super effective against dragon. Posters on vp are saying it doesnt make sense but i remember a poster here posted a quote from an author about fairy tales allowing us to know that dragons can be beaten or whatever. It would be nuts if that was the inspiration.
