I get the feeling this is going to be a glorified All Star Game. But I certainly hope not.

I think the effort level will be somewhere on par with the world championships... so some players will care more than others. the actual hockey will be better just by virtue of the higher talent level.

I just can't get excited for this. I'll probably tune into the odd game, but it just feels like an exhibition to me.

It's pretty pathetic to only have 6 countries competing.

Actually Europe is several different countries on one team.

I always like watching hockey and after the summer have to admit I'm looking forward to this. Going to watch all the North America and Canada games, most likely. Go team North AmeriCanada!

I'm not used to watch Hockey but "World Cup" , only 8 teams , some of them don't even represent a country lol It's kinda sad

BTW awesome job on the OT, Quick, as always.

Don't know why there's so much pessimism towards this, it won't be the Olympics, but it won't be the World Championship, actually competitive rosters are being iced. The NA team will probably surprise some guys and push other teams too.

TBH it's more of a NHL tournament than a International one. Do you really wanna watch Austria or Lativia get the asses kicked by Canada/USA 12-1?

This Tournament seems more fair than the IIHF one

ok that explains it

because I was also gonna ask why this is held now and not over january as usual

While there are a ton of countries that have produced NHL talent, there are only a handful that have enough to compete at a high level.

Watching a Latvia vs Canada or Germany vs USA match would by abysmal. Combining many of the smaller Euro countries into one makes the most competitive sense.

Plus, this is basically a cashgrab and an excuse by the NHL owners to say their players get to compete in international hockey where they control everything and get money out of it, without sending them to the Olympics, where they get no revenue and risk their players getting hurt.

I get your point, but seems hockey is not widespread as other sports are , they could use this world cup as an incentive to other countries to invest on the sport i guess

We might see a Asian team down the road I think. The KHL has expanded into China, they won their first two games. So that's very promising

I'm pretty sure this is a one-time thing. In 2020, it's going to be just national teams, with qualifying in 2019.

the thing is there's already world championships every year which every country participates in (if they qualify). the only problem with that tournament is it's held during the NHL playoffs so a lot of the top players in the world don't show up. it's definitely a big deal in Europe though.

Search inside yourself and cheer for Team North America.
Which team has the best chance at destroying a hotel room? I'll root for them.
Damn people are shocked when I say the '96 final was one of my favorite sporting events to watch. Now they will laugh and point at me.

All I know is that Team North America has Connor McDavid, therefore I cheer for Team North America.

Definitely the team made of teenagers and 20 year olds. McDavid might even have more than 1 root beer.

Are you INSANE?!

He might have one or two cans V1 vegetable juice, but Root Beer? What kind of party do you think they're going to throw?
