Batman Arkham City |OT| Smashin' Faces, Glidin' Places

So I finally got around to beating the main game and have done a few side missions. I don't usually like side quests, but the Victor Zsasz one is fantastic. He's such a believable character that it made me want to bust his head in. His phone calls were creepy as hell too!
I think I'm ready to put this game down but I might come back to it for the other content, eventually.

I got a weird problem with the PC version where I get some micro stutter from time to time when VSync is enabled. It's also always at the same spots it seems. It seemsl ike its related to animation but I'm not so sure. Any idea?

In all honesty, I may be ignorant but I just can't spot the difference between DX9 and X11 in this video. It looks the same ot me.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-pc-tech-comparison-batman-arkham-city

EDIT:

Hi guys,

got an i5 2500k and a 560TI. I can run the game with solid 60FPS in DX9 mode everything set to high and PhysX on normal. However I get weird framerate problems for a fraction of a second in some places resulting in heavy stuttering. For example there is a room in jokers hideout where you rescue that women doc. There is fire and all that. The room is 60FPS but always when I swing from one side of the room to the other room, the moment right before Batman flips on the statuehead right befre the framerate drops from 60 to 40 or so for a little moment and that results in bad and very annoying stutter. This is *always* the same, no matter what I tried, no matter which settings I chose.

Is there a way to make this run better?

Is it just me or are the controls overly complex? I think after 20 years of gaming this is my first time where I really have to think about controls like "what did I want to do now" and bla. I died several times to a boss because I just pressed the wrong buttons, especially in panic mode. Maybe I'm just getting old? I kinda know now how a casual must feel when he's supposed to play a hardcore game the first time...

Um...they worked fine for me. I played the game on my PC with the X360 controller and it was great and intuitive.

(also been gaming for 20+ yrs if that matters).

I'm using M/Keyboard. The problem isnt to punch or to counter, that's clear. It's all the special stuff you can do and have to do or even to combine at some points. The basic control is easy, yeah. But sometimes it comes together in a way which is...mind boggling. o_O

So, I finished it today. Have to say brillant game, I'm quite surprised that I liked it that much, really didn't expect that. I liked it much better than AA, don't ask me why. I also loved Infamous, maybe that's why. But in AA I had the feeling that it was stretched out too far and it was boring inbetween and the figting and the bosses sucked. This was fixed in AC, the pacing was brillant, the story was nice, characters were great overall, boss fights were EPIC. Really nice game.

One more thing though, I wrapped up Catwomans last mission as well and then went on and did her last side quest, where you need to get her stuff. However after I finished it...nothing happened. No movie sequence, not even a comment from here. Is that correct? Seemed weird.

Alrighty, I beat the main Batman story in this a little while after the release, then I put it to the side to focus on other games, and one thing led to another and I just never went back to it until now. I started up my saved game and I'm Catwoman in the museum going after Two-Face and I'm at the gladiator room. Stupid me never upgraded Catwoman at all up to this point, so she is very weak and I'm playing on hard. Any tips to get that experience up to upgrade the hand-to-hand armor? Just go back out and beat up random groups of guys?

I can't stand to hardly try that room anymore on my current level with her. I get awful close to getting past it even as weak as she is, but I haven't had any luck completing it yet and It's driving me mad.

That hard eh?

Yeah, I can go back into the city from there to right my wrong. I was determined to do it on my current level, but I'm thissssssssss close to giving up and trying to build up the experience.

yes, variations and un-interrupted freeflow will give you lots of points. Best place to accomplish this is:
Solomon Wayne's tribunal (enemies will respawn two times overthere after you finish the main story, mind you it's a very big group of thugs) Bane's hideout (always respawn), roof of Gotham Casino (the balcony with the pool always respawns eight-ten enemies), front of Gotham's cathedral (goons number varies a lot based on whether you are in new game plus or not).

I can't stand to hardly try that room anymore on my current level with her. I get awful close to getting past it even as weak as she is, but I haven't had any luck completing it yet and It's driving me mad.

Spam the whip, either with the area whiplash or with the sweeping slash. Don't use it as quick-fire gadget because it's slwoooow. You also have three caltrop mines: they will down A LOT of people. You can also keep jumping until you are surrounded, then jump out of the group of enemies and throw the bolas: rinse, repeat.
Or you can just do the cheesy "jump, hit, jump, hit, jump, hit" trick, until your thumbs hurt.

Once HQR hit I finally got back into Arkham City, and FINALLY the combat clicked!

No more button mashing. Feels good, mang.

Played through HQR about 3 times and decided to go back to Arkham Asylum and did the previously unthinkable task of 1000/1000 the fucker.

Decided to go back to AC and finish off NG+ (I quit at the arse kicking I was receiving at the Museum) and finally finished NG+, closely followed by all the Batman related Riddlers revenge stuff.

I've now got all the combat challenges done for everyone (except Jokers Carnival - I keep getting so close too!) and I finished all Catwomans Riddler's Revenge challenges. I'm working my way through her Campaigns now and have done the first row.

I've gotta start on the Extreme challenges tonight... I just know they're gonna be harsh.

I never realised just how much I relied on "Disarm & Destroy" till I played CW/R/NW.

The only achievements I have left now are Calandar Man (trying for it legit) and Catwomans Campaign complete, Robin's Challenges (just predator, already done combat)/Campaign and Nightwing's Challenges/Campaign (same situation as Robin).

It's gonna take a while, but I'm sure I can do it.

I am pretty LTTP, and have just started Batman Arkham City I loved Asylum, and now this feels incredible, being let loose in a free roam, criminal infested part of town is a cool idea. I do have some questions though.

I have only got as far as tracking the Jokers signal, so obviously not very far at all, im feeling pretty overwhelmed by all the gadgets I have that I dont know how to use, are they slowly introduced as I go through the story, or is this it now? Its been a while since I played Arkham Asylum, and the way the game suddently throws you at it felt really jarring.

Pretty early on, it sounded like the Riddler or someone was talking about something (in the courthouse) but I totally missed it by stepping through a door, and I couldnt trigger the audio again when going back in, have I missed something vital? Should I stop and listen when people talk while free roaming? Or will I get other chances to hear it all?

As I fight people, I see that unless I use my unlocks as I get them, that the game decides to keep the rank up text flashing, at the moment im quite happy to let the unlocks pile up until I figure out whats useful, is there any way to disable that part of the UI? An even better question is, what should I focus on? What would people suggest I unlock?

Can I save the game manually? I.e. if I travel to a part of town near my next objective, can I save right there? Or is the only way to save the game by completing stuff?

How exactly do the side missions work? I have only just started the game and have already trigged a couple, what happens if I fail a side mission, the one with the telephones and the time limit seems like something I wanted to deliberately fail initially just to do it later, but I was too scared I would close off that side mission if I did fail?

Am I missing anything vital by not having the Catwoman DLC? (I have only rented the game :() - How long will the game take to go through? I have the game for 2 weeks, should I rush? Or can I comfortably play through the game in that time? I have about 2 hours a day to play, which is like 20 hours over 2 weeks (give or take). Seems like a long enough time?

Thanks!

If you are playing on normal, the game just looks overwhelming. You'll get the hang of it quickly.
If you are on hard difficulty, I'd suggest to scale it back to normal: enemies are very, very, fast and even with the counter signals you are going to get smacked around a lot.

Pretty early on, it sounded like the Riddler or someone was talking about something (in the courthouse) but I totally missed it by stepping through a door, and I couldnt trigger the audio again when going back in, have I missed something vital? This is the reason why I've said the game looks (sounds?) overwhelming. You may loose some cool dialogue here and there but the things you need to know are all stuffed in the map or the side missions log.

As I fight people, I see that unless I use my unlocks as I get them, that the game decides to keep the rank up text flashing, at the moment im quite happy to let the unlocks pile up until I figure out whats useful, is there any way to disable that part of the UI? Nope. It's rather boring thing, I concur, and I warn you in advance: two boss fights will display command inputs in the middle of the screen. Unless you want to ruin the experience for yourself, perform them immediately (as they won't go away otherwise).

Can I save the game manually? I.e. if I travel to a part of town near my next objective, can I save right there? Or is the only way to save the game by completing stuff?

You can't. If you really want to be sure, enter a building (any will do, even the ones you already visited): the game will autosave.

How exactly do the side missions work? I have only just started the game and have already trigged a couple, what happens if I fail a side mission, the one with the telephones and the time limit seems like something I wanted to deliberately fail initially just to do it later, but I was too scared I would close off that side mission if I did fail?

You can't fail side missions. The game keeps track of them because you can complete them before or after the main game ended. There's no time restraint.

Enough to complete the main quest (six, eight hours tops). Getting all riddler trophies, all achievements and all side missions is going to take a while though. If you rented this game I guess you aren't interested in cheevos, but riddler trophies are vital if you want to complete Riddler' side mission: his location is detected only after you get every single one of them, like in Asylum.
And no, Catwoman dlc is not necessary to enjoy the game but gives an interesting clue to read the ending, and lets you enjoy the game fighting system and exploring system in a rather unique fashion.

Thanks for the answers! I will probably carry on playing through the game, (I have just gone through the museum) everything is ramping up really nicely, but I doubt I will get all the collectable trophies, I mean, most of them are mini games in themselves to get, but going for all 400 will just be tedious. I will go for just about everything else the game has going though, most of those side missions look as good as doing the main quest!

Great game so far!

Got the PC version for $6.75 at Gamefly and been having a blast, probably 10 hours in already. I will agree with the criticism that the open world makes the game feel not as focused and tightly designed as AA, it feels like you're wandering around the city looking for what to do next than that you're being guided to your objective. If, like me, you feel the need to beat up every thug in the city between levels in order to max your XP and get upgrades sooner, it kinda feels like a chore. In AA it was relatively easy to do that because the island was small enough that you would run into most enemy groups on the way to your next objective anyway, but in AC, I feel like I should canvass the whole city and take down a lot more enemies. It feels like grinding.

It does make me wonder how many upgrades you can get if you just go from mission to mission without beating up all the guys on the streets. Anyone know how they balance it?

Also, guys with knives are fucking hard, I can't get that dodge move right.

On a more positive note, the attention to detail is really incredible. Enemies don't just stand around, they play baseball . In the
museum
level after you rescue the hostages, they'll actually walk around and activate the exhibits then comment on them. I also noticed that
Batman's face shows just a hint of black veins on the sides due to the virus, it wouldn't surprise me if that gets more prominent as I progress. It's a small detail but it shows you how much care they put into everything.

Also, I'm maybe 30-40% into the story and Batman's suit is already more shredded than it was at the end of AA. I expect by the end of AC it'll be completely tatterred, lol.

Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum - A Serious House on Serious Earth (the first game was pretty much based on it)
Alan Moore's Killing Joke
Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns & Year One
Gotham Central (it concentrates on the police force of Gotham City)

Is it better if i get the single issues of 40 of gotham central, or the collected editions?

http://www.comicvine.com/gotham-central/49-9958/

And whats the cheapeast place to get these books? Barns and noble, amazon?

I've read them in a collected form, but I borrowed them from a library, so I have no idea what's the best place to order them. Perhaps Play.com, as they tend to have pretty low prices, if you live in Europe.

I'm currently waiting for the 4th hard cover edition to arrive from the library.

Just picked this up in the Steam sales. I'm getting horrible chugging when I enter a new area and spin the camera around for the first time. After that, 60fps. Any ideas?

Does anyone know what those computers are called that you have to disable across the city? I think im missing one and i dont know what to look for on the net.

Anyone know how to stop the mouse pointer from showing up? I'm playing with a 360 controller, and yet every time I bring up the map, the pointer appears in the centre of the screen. Moving it off to the right doesn't help, it always resets itself.

Same thing here and AFAIK, there's nothing we can do about it. :/

I got 3 of the comics you recommended. AA, killing joke, and TDK returns. I'll get year one and GC later on.

Im currently reading killing joke. Amazing so far. Exactly what i needed. And just so you know, i think you set off the comic collector in me. At least for batman. Thanks! lol.

Also B&N is having B2G1F graphic novel sale. I got the killing joke free.

After double-dipping with the pc version of Arkham City I also purchased Harley's Revenge. I expected it to seamlessly integrate with the main game after finishing the vanilla storyline but nothing happened. I checked the main menu to see if it has a different launcher much like Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare but there is no option whatsoever to play the DLC segment.

There's no seperate launcher inside the Steam client either. I have no idea how to play it but I'm probably overlooking something obvious. Anyone have any clue?

Glad to hear you found and enjoyed them. AA is probably my all-time favorite Batman story. I'd want to buy it myself, but the hardcover book is a bit too expensive.
EDIT: I don't collect comics myself that much anymore due to the costs, as there's just too many I'd want to buy, but I have most of the classics that were released in the 80's and 90's here in Finland. I continue reading comics through library, about 10-20 books in a month. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to slow down the pace, as I've soon read all they have, and new ones aren't coming fast enough.

Joker was pretty good, but not in the league of the other classics. There are a plenty of good Batman stories worth your time, eventhough they might not reach the heights of the best.

I might also recommend The Long Halloween.

Just played the Harlequin DLC. Pretty underwhelming, but what can you expect from DLC these days. It really makes me think about how much I miss the expansion packs of old, as they always provided enough content and pacing to fulfil the need for more of the same game.

Hey guys, about to delve into this one on PC. But one question: KB/M or Xbox controller?

I play with a Logitec F710, works like a charm [after some fiddling]. I prefer the analog sticks for more accurate movement.

My problems with the PC version continue. My framerate is rocksteady (hurhur), and yet I get these weird slow downs or extreme stuttering. They last 1 or 2 seconds, and seems to happen quite often just before doing silent takedown moves. Anyone else have this? And are there any solutions?

Whenever I notice stuttering in games I cap the fps limit, for instance with Dxtory. Works great.

I can't seem to get Dxtory to run at the moment. But when I tried to limit Skyrim to 30fps, I wasn't impressed. It didn't feel anything like a console 30fps lock.

Anyway I don't think it would resolve the problem with Arkham City. This not a small performance drop like Skyrim where locking it to 30fps would disguise the drops, this is like 1 or 2 seconds of what can't be more than 5fps.

I've now reached a room where I can generate this extreme stutter every time I switch to another vantage point.

Does your CPU have hyper-threading? That causes it, or at least that's what google told me. You can turn it off.

Let me guess, the GCPD? That room always bogs down my fps for no reason.

When I started the game I had some drops and slowdown during final takedowns and whatnot so I disabled motion blur and v-synch. It seems that rooms with dynamic fog or dust [GCPD, court room] take a hit on my performance.

It's pretty remarkable that the entire area of Arkham City itself runs smooth as silk but a small room like the court room cripples my gpu.

I just tried that, has no effect. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Nope, I'm in the Smelting Chamber in the Steel Mill. There's nobody around, it's a pretty small room, and I'm just swinging between the vantage points.

[edit] just tried it on lowest settings - identical stuttering.

Now they're suggesting I should make sure GFWL and Arkham City are up to date. Arkham City auto updates through Steam, but I have no idea how to update GFWL? If I bring it up in the game and go to version info, it just has a welcome message...

When I followed that link, it started up a program called 'Games For Windows Marketplace' and I signed in... and then nothing.

The main Marketplace page simply reads 'Great Games, Great Prices: Now on Xbox.com'... as if this software is totally out of date (indeed it says 'Copyright 2010 Micorsoft Corporation' in the settings menu). And like the in-game menu, I see no option to check for updates.

If i were you, id try uninstalling games for windows and reinstalling it. MS really dropped the ball with GFWL. Usually its like xbox360 games. Itll auto update as you log in. But now that MS kinda dont support it anymore, its become a fuckin mess.

I had troubles too when i wanted to play Halo2 and Gears on it.
